A VLC Video playlist can play files in sequence, but its documented playlist controls do not specify automatic crossfades between items.
This guide is for local video files played through OBS. A playlist on a YouTube watch page is a different feature.
Choose the right OBS setup

OBS describes its VLC Video source as allowing a playlist “similar to an Image Slideshow” (OBS Media Sources, January 11, 2022). That is a playback queue, not evidence of an automatic crossfade. For a deliberate fade between specific clips, use scenes and the scene-transition controls.
Set up clips as scenes and fade between them

Install the needed software
Install OBS Studio. If you plan to use a VLC Video source for a playlist, install VLC too. OBS specifically says that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

Add each clip to its own scene
Create a scene for each clip you want to transition between, then add that clip as a Media Source. OBS documents local video support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Check that each source is visible in the intended scene and framed as you want it on stream.

Select Fade and set its duration
In OBS’s Scene Transitions controls, select Fade and choose a duration that suits the footage. OBS also documents Cut, Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, and Luma Wipe. The Overview Guide says Fade and Cut are available from the first launch (OBS Studio Overview Guide, August 25, 2021).

Prepare the next scene in Studio Mode
Turn on Studio Mode so you can prepare the incoming scene in preview before taking it to the live program. When the outgoing clip is ready to end, switch to the prepared scene using the selected Fade transition.

Keep the stream output active
Do not stop the OBS stream to change clips. OBS sends its program output to the streaming service; changing the program scene changes what is being sent. Check OBS’s stream status and the YouTube preview before relying on the sequence for a full broadcast. OBS’s Help Portal provides general support resources.

Test the whole sequence
Preview the actual files in order, including the last-to-first handoff if the sequence will loop. Check picture framing, timing, and audio at every transition. The documentation describes the controls, but does not promise gapless decoding between files or a flawless result for every system and source arrangement.
When a playlist is enough
If you need sequential playback rather than a designed transition, add a VLC Video source and populate its playlist. Leave shuffle off for a fixed order; enable looping only if the list should repeat. Choose its visibility behavior deliberately: OBS documents the default as stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting it when visible. These playlist options do not establish that items will crossfade.

Check the audio separately
A visual scene fade does not, by itself, establish that the audio tracks of two video files will crossfade smoothly in every scene arrangement. Listen to the actual stream output during a test transition. If uninterrupted music is essential, one practical option is to prepare a continuous audio bed rather than relying on a playlist setting to bridge separate files; test it with the clips and sources you will use.

For an animated or shaped transition, OBS supports stinger transitions, including track-matte stingers. Gray values in the mask allow a degree of blending between outgoing and incoming scenes. This is a more involved alternative to the standard Fade: OBS notes that it does not support lock-step video decoding for separate stinger and track-matte files, and recommends combining those assets in one file. Keep the YouTube broadcast running through scene changes
A local OBS scene transition is separate from YouTube’s ingest protocol. YouTube’s HLS guidance says HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream like RTMP (YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream). That distinction does not mean you need to end the broadcast to switch OBS scenes. Keep OBS streaming while you change program content, and verify the live preview.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The playlist changes clips without fading: A VLC Video playlist is documented as playlist playback, not automatic per-item crossfading. Use separate scenes and Fade for planned transitions.
- The next scene is not ready when you switch: Prepare it in Studio Mode and confirm its media source is loaded and visible before taking it live.
- There is a pause or black frame between clips: The documentation does not guarantee gapless handoffs. Test the actual files and system; consider adjusting the transition duration or preparing media to avoid a visible interruption.
- Audio cuts, overlaps, or jumps in loudness: Treat audio as a separate transition to test. Listen to the output, and use a prepared continuous audio bed if continuity matters.
- The VLC Video source is unavailable: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC according to OBS’s Media Sources page.
- A playlist restarts or stops unexpectedly: Review the source’s visibility behavior. OBS documents a default that stops it when hidden and restarts it when visible.
- The stream ends during a transition: Confirm OBS stream status and YouTube preview before the sequence. Change scenes without stopping the active OBS output.
