To stream a prerecorded video from a Mac mini, play the file in OBS Studio and send OBS’s encoder feed to YouTube Live. You can stream one file once or loop it, schedule an upcoming event in YouTube Studio, and check the preview before going live. Your Mac mini must stay on and connected throughout this local workflow.
Check that your channel can go live
Before configuring OBS, confirm your YouTube channel is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so complete activation well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
If viewers should be able to find an upcoming watch page and opt into a reminder, schedule the stream before starting OBS.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the Manage tab and choose the option to schedule a stream.
- Enter the event details and set the privacy and audience options appropriate to your content. Check the privacy setting carefully, especially during testing.
- Open the scheduled stream’s settings in Live Control Room and locate the stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS.
YouTube documents public, private, and unlisted stream options. The scheduled watch page and reminder feature are useful for promotion, but scheduling is not required to test an encoder feed.

Set up the prerecorded video in OBS
OBS Studio is free, open-source software that runs on macOS. Its Media Source accepts common local video formats, including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. OBS describes the feature simply: “Media source adds different types of media files to your scenes.” See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
Play one video
- In OBS, create a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, add a Media Source and select the local video file.
- Set the source to restart when it becomes active if you want playback to begin from the start whenever you activate that scene.
- Enable Loop only if the video should repeat continuously. It is off by default.
- Check the video in the OBS preview and confirm its framing and audio levels. Make sure the source is visible in the scene.
Play a playlist
For a sequence of files, use OBS’s VLC Video source and add the playlist there. VLC must be installed for that source to appear in OBS. Configure playlist looping if you want the sequence to repeat; test the transitions and audio between files before the event.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the scheduled stream or encoder setup.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube if it is available as a service, and use the available account connection or stream-key option. If entering the server manually, use YouTube’s stream URL; enter the key in the stream-key field.
- Apply the settings and do not display or share the stream key in a recording, screenshot, or on-screen overlay.
YouTube describes the stream key as the password and address that let an encoder send a feed for YouTube to accept. Menu wording can vary between OBS versions, so confirm that the selected service and server correspond to the scheduled YouTube stream.

Choose stable video, audio, and network settings
Match the output to the source file, the Mac mini’s encoding capacity, and the available upload connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its encoder guidance also calls for constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not set the interval above four seconds. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Mac or connection will sustain the stream. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guide before choosing a different codec or resolution.
YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations
| Output resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates for the listed codecs and output modes. YouTube also lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with up to 60 fps. For audio, use AAC or MP3; 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC. YouTube’s recommendation for stereo is a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate. For ordinary 1080p SDR video, Rec. 709 is the recommended color space. Avoid adding HDR or 4K complexity unless the source, encoder, Mac hardware, and network are all ready for it.
Leave upload headroom
The stream bitrate must fit the connection’s available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends 20% headroom; check upload performance rather than relying on download speed, which may be much higher. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the output resolution or bitrate and test again.

Test the full setup, then start the broadcast
Test the exact file, scene, audio, and output settings you intend to use. YouTube suggests setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder 15 minutes before the scheduled event; these are preparation recommendations, not technical prerequisites.
- Start OBS streaming and wait for the incoming feed to appear in the YouTube Live Control Room preview.
- Watch and listen to the preview. Confirm the opening, motion, framing, audio level, and any playlist transitions work as intended.
- Check that the stream appears on the expected channel or watch page. If mobile viewing matters, verify it there too.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages and OBS output throughout the event. Keep an eye on audio and video rather than assuming that a successful connection means playback is correct.
- When ready, start the event from Live Control Room if YouTube presents a separate start control for the scheduled stream.
Test streams should use a privacy setting that fits the test audience. Do not assume a private rehearsal is public-facing or that changing privacy later will conceal material already seen by viewers.

End the live stream cleanly
At the end of the program, stop sending content from OBS. Confirm the broadcast has ended in YouTube Studio, then stop the encoder if it is still running. YouTube automatically archives streams that run for less than 12 hours; check the channel’s video list to confirm the archive is present.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | The channel is not verified, has a restriction, or first-time live activation is still processing. | Check channel eligibility and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation before the event. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed | The wrong stream URL or key was entered, or the key belongs to another stream. | Compare OBS’s server and key with the values shown for the intended stream in Live Control Room. Reset an exposed key and replace it in OBS. |
| The file does not play or appears blank | The Media Source points to the wrong file, is hidden, or is not visible in the active scene. | Check the file path and source visibility, then preview the scene in OBS before connecting to YouTube. |
| The video stops after one play | Media Source looping is off by default. | Enable Loop on the Media Source if continuous repeat is intended. For a playlist, configure looping in the VLC Video source. |
| The playlist source is unavailable | VLC is not installed. | Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check for the VLC Video source. |
| Playback stutters or stream health degrades | The output bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the Mac may not sustain the chosen encoding workload. | Measure upload performance, preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom, and test a lower bitrate or resolution on the target Mac mini. |
| The video works but audio is missing or wrong | The file, OBS audio routing, or output audio settings may not match the intended program. | Test the exact audio path in OBS and in YouTube’s preview; confirm the source contains the intended audio and select a supported audio codec. |
When a different playout approach makes sense
Mac mini with OBS
The Mac mini method gives you local control over a media source, scene, and playlist. It requires the Mac and its network connection to remain available for the broadcast, and performance depends on the particular Mac mini, file, settings, and connection. YouTube’s documentation establishes macOS support for OBS but does not guarantee performance for a specific Mac mini generation; test the complete setup on the machine you plan to use.
Production software or a dedicated appliance
YouTube’s encoder directory lists Ecamm as Mac live-production software, but that listing alone does not establish that every Ecamm edition supports every prerecorded-file workflow. The directory also lists AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream, a specialized hardware option that can schedule prerecorded media and stream to YouTube Live without a computer. It is an alternative for someone specifically seeking appliance-based operation, not a requirement for using a Mac mini.
Cloud playback for continuous streams
YouTube’s encoder directory includes cloud services positioned for continuous prerecorded streams, such as Gyre. Compare current features and terms directly before choosing one. Consider whether you need unattended playback, remote monitoring, and less dependence on a local computer, alongside setup, privacy, and rights requirements.
