A black interval between playlist videos does not, by itself, prove YouTube is causing the problem. Find the first place it appears: the playlist/source, the encoder output, a local recording, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, or only a viewer’s playback. That narrows the fault to the relevant part of the stream path before you change settings or buy equipment.

Why does my YouTube live stream go black between videos?

The cause is not established by the symptom alone. A likely workflow-level explanation is that one playlist item ends before the next is ready, or that the encoder changes sources or scenes during the handoff. These are possibilities to check, not causes confirmed by YouTube’s documentation.

YouTube’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder, source, CPU load, local archive, and outbound internet connection. Use those checks to identify where the black interval first appears. A gap already present in the source or encoder output points toward the playlist or encoding workflow; a clean local recording with a problem later in the chain shifts attention to streaming, ingestion, or playback.

How to locate the black interval

  1. Check the playlist boundary. Inspect the end of the outgoing file and the beginning of the next one. Look for blank frames, a delayed file opening, or a pause introduced by the playlist or automation system. YouTube does not prescribe settings for third-party playlist schedulers, so check the system that assembles and plays your playlist.
  2. Watch the encoder preview or program output. Observe the exact transition. Confirm that the next source becomes active, and check for encoder errors or unusually high CPU load. If the preview goes black at the same moment, investigate the source handoff or encoder path.
  3. Compare a local recording or archive. If the black interval is recorded locally, focus on the source, playlist, and encoder. If the archive is clean, compare it with the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, then check the outbound connection.
  4. Check Live Control Room and viewer reports. YouTube recommends previewing the stream before going live, monitoring audio and video during the broadcast, and checking stream health. Determine whether the problem appears in the preview or is reported only by viewers. Reports from multiple viewers make a stream-wide problem more plausible than an issue limited to one device, but use YouTube’s error-specific troubleshooting guidance to investigate.
  5. Test a representative transition. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the intended broadcast. Test an actual playlist handoff—not just a static section of one video—and monitor both picture and sound.
  6. Check the outbound connection if the encoder looks healthy. YouTube advises checking outbound internet strength when the stream looks and sounds healthy in the encoder. Network congestion can affect streaming even when a connection can sustain the average bitrate, but that does not establish network congestion as the cause of a gap at a playlist boundary.

Which stream settings are relevant?

Check general encoder and latency settings after you have located where the problem begins. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. That is a general encoder recommendation, not a documented fix for black frames between playlist items.

Latency is also worth considering when viewers report interruptions. YouTube explains that lower latency reduces the player’s read-ahead buffer and can make buffering more likely. A higher-latency setting may help stability in some circumstances, but YouTube does not document it as a cure for playlist-boundary black screens.

Do not assume that changing auto-start, auto-stop, DVR, or another stream setting will make transitions gapless. YouTube’s published guidance covers these settings and general stream setup, but the official material reviewed does not identify a setting that guarantees seamless transitions between videos played through a third-party playlist system.

Common symptoms and what to check

  • The encoder preview goes black at the handoff: inspect the playlist timing, source readiness, and encoder’s source or scene transition.
  • The encoder looks normal, but the local archive has a gap: investigate the recording and encoding path around the transition.
  • The archive is clean, but Live Control Room shows a problem: check stream-health messages and the outbound connection.
  • Live Control Room looks normal, but one viewer sees black: compare reports from other viewers before treating it as a stream-wide fault.
  • Multiple viewers report interruption and the encoder looks healthy: follow YouTube’s relevant error-specific troubleshooting steps and check network conditions.

A new hardware encoder, capture card, network cable, or separate playback device is not automatically the answer. YouTube gives general advice about encoder choice for higher-production-value events, but that is not evidence that buying hardware fixes this particular transition symptom.
