OBS is usually the better starting point if you want a visual setup and an easy built-in way to loop a prerecorded video. Add the file as a Media Source, enable Loop, and send the output to YouTube. FFmpeg is a command-line alternative that can suit scripted workflows, but the exact loop command and unattended reliability are not established here. Whichever encoder you choose, configure it to YouTube’s current ingest guidance, monitor stream health, and plan separately for interruptions and a local recording.
OBS or FFmpeg: which should you choose?

For most creators setting up a first loop, OBS is the more straightforward choice because the loop control is visible in its interface. Choose FFmpeg only if you are comfortable building and supervising a command-line workflow. Both must send a YouTube-compatible stream and use YouTube Live Control Room for stream setup.
How to loop a prerecorded video with OBS
- Create a YouTube stream: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or configure a stream. Copy the stream server URL and stream key for the encoder. YouTube’s setup guide describes this workflow at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Add the video in OBS: Add a Media Source to a scene and select the prerecorded video file. Enable the source’s Loop setting so it restarts when playback reaches the end. OBS documents the media source controls in its Media Sources documentation.
- Configure the YouTube connection: In OBS stream settings, select the YouTube service or a custom server as appropriate, then enter the server URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it.
- Match YouTube’s ingest settings: YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS for the listed encoder workflow. Its current guidance identifies H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs; frame rates up to 60 fps; a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds); and CBR bitrate encoding. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the exact row for your intended output in YouTube’s Live encoder settings rather than applying one bitrate to every setup.
- Start and verify: Start streaming in OBS, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and check the stream health and any displayed messages. Use Go live in Live Control Room when the workflow requires that platform step. Before relying on a long broadcast, test with audio and movement representative of the actual video; YouTube recommends monitoring health and reviewing messages.
OBS looping restarts the media source, not your entire broadcast system. A loop setting does not restart OBS after a crash, repair a lost internet connection, or ensure YouTube reconnects. For a true unattended run, decide how you will supervise the process, detect a failed stream, restart it, and receive alerts.
What about FFmpeg?
FFmpeg can be a reasonable choice if you prefer a command-line process that can be incorporated into scripts or a managed host. The available documentation for this comparison does not establish the exact current flags for looping a file or provide a tested command, so it would be misleading to offer a universal command as verified. A working command also depends on the source file, output resolution and frame rate, chosen codec, audio, bitrate, and YouTube ingest settings.

Whichever FFmpeg workflow you implement, follow the same YouTube setup sequence: create or configure a stream, give the encoder the server URL and stream key, start sending, check the preview and stream health, then use Live Control Room’s Go live action when required. A script is not, by itself, a recovery plan; arrange restart supervision, interruption monitoring, and a local recording separately.
What a 24/7 YouTube stream needs beyond looping
Test the actual output
Use YouTube’s encoder guidance for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Test with representative audio and motion, watch stream health, and review any messages in Live Control Room. A stream that starts is not necessarily a stream that remains healthy.

Plan for the archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete copy matters, record locally as a backup or plan deliberate shorter broadcast segments. Do not depend on one continuous 24/7 stream to produce a complete YouTube archive. Check rights before broadcasting
You remain responsible for the rights needed to exploit the live content, including applicable music licensing rights. A video being available online does not establish permission to rebroadcast it. Review the YouTube Terms of Service and secure the necessary rights for every video and audio track.

Do not assume a loop qualifies for monetization
YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams and expects original, authentic content; repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible. Looping a file does not decide eligibility by itself, and continuous availability does not guarantee monetization. Where available, YouTube lists ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible live-stream monetization features, but ads are not guaranteed to be served.
