Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If OBS media files go missing after a Windows update, first check that the files and their drive are still available. Then compare their current locations with the paths saved in OBS and relink anything that moved. The timing alone does not show that Windows caused the problem: OBS says updates should leave its settings intact, and a changed drive letter or unavailable volume can make a local file path stop resolving.
Why OBS media files may appear offline
An OBS Media Source points to a local audio or video file through its Local File setting. If the file is moved, its drive is disconnected, or Windows assigns a different drive letter, the saved path may no longer lead to it. The file can still exist even though OBS cannot find it.
OBS’s missing-files dialog describes the issue as “Some files are missing since you last used OBS.” A Windows update may be when you noticed the problem, but check the file, drive, path, and source before treating the update as its cause.
Check the file and path first
- Open File Explorer and browse to the affected file. Confirm that the audio or video file still exists and opens.
- If it is on an external or secondary drive, reconnect the drive and confirm that Windows can browse its contents.
- Note the file’s current full path, including the drive letter and folder names. Compare it with the location previously used by the OBS source. A changed letter or folder is enough to break the old reference.
Relink missing media in OBS
- Open the OBS missing-files workflow for the affected media. The dialog provides controls including Search Directory… and Select file….
- Use Search Directory… to search the folder where the media now lives, or use Select file… to choose a replacement file or folder.
- Review the dialog’s found-file count. If OBS does not find the media, check that you selected the correct folder and that the drive is mounted and accessible in Windows.
- After the references are repaired, save the scene collection, reopen the affected scene, and confirm that each source plays as expected.
OBS Media Sources support common video formats such as MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. See the OBS Media Sources guide for source properties and supported formats.

Keep media paths stable to prevent repeat problems
Keep a removable drive on the same letter
If you use removable storage—especially across more than one PC—assign it the same drive letter each time. The OBS portable-mode guide recommends this approach for removable media. It is simple, but depends on that letter staying available and the drive being connected whenever OBS needs the files. The guide is a community resource published in 2016, so treat it as practical guidance rather than a current Windows guarantee: OBS and OBS-Studio: Portable Mode on Windows.
Mount a drive under a folder path
Windows can expose a volume at a folder path instead of relying on a drive letter. Microsoft documents setup through Disk Management, command line, and PowerShell. A folder mount point requires the volume to use NTFS or ReFS. Follow the steps for your Windows edition, and consider other applications that may depend on existing drive or folder paths before changing them. See Microsoft’s instructions for assigning a mount point folder path.

| Path approach | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Consistent drive letter | You use removable storage or move an OBS setup between PCs. | The chosen letter must remain available and the volume must be connected. |
| Folder mount point | You want OBS to use a stable folder path rather than a particular drive letter. | Setup is required in Windows, and the volume must be formatted as NTFS or ReFS. |
A dedicated external drive can help keep media organized, but it does not fix a broken path by itself. OBS still needs the drive mounted at the path its sources expect.
If more than media files broke after an update
If other OBS features also fail, use the OBS Help Portal troubleshooting guidance. OBS notes that security software may scrutinize an updated application and recommends checking its whitelist settings. That possibility concerns broader OBS failures; it does not explain a changed media path on its own.
