In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced, enable Automatically Reconnect, then choose a Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. OBS increases the wait between attempts after each retry, so the delay is a starting interval—not a fixed polling schedule. Reconnect settings and playlist looping are separate: reconnect can restore the stream output, while the playlist source controls whether video keeps repeating.
Set OBS to reconnect automatically
- Open the reconnect controls: In OBS Studio, go to Settings → Advanced and find the Automatically Reconnect option.
- Enable automatic reconnect: Turn on the option, then set Retry Delay and Maximum Retries.
- Choose values for your service and recovery window: OBS does not prescribe universal numbers for every network or streaming service. The retry delay is the initial wait; OBS documentation says the wait doubles on successive retries to avoid overloading services. Maximum Retries caps the attempts, and the OBS API documentation says a retry count of zero disables reconnecting. OBS output documentation
There is no single best preset: weigh the initial delay and increasing waits against the maximum number of attempts, the destination’s reconnect behavior, and how much viewer interruption you can tolerate. Increasing retries does not guarantee that a destination will accept a new connection or that the underlying problem will clear.
Make sure the playlist loops independently
For a playlist, OBS provides a VLC Video source. VLC must be installed for this source to appear. In the source properties, check Loop Playlist if you want the list to repeat; it defaults to on. Shuffle Playlist defaults to off, so items play in order unless you change it. OBS Media Sources
Reconnect controls affect the stream output, not playlist behavior. A playlist can keep playing locally while the output is disconnected, and a reconnected output does not by itself prove that the playlist is advancing as intended. Test item transitions and playback after changing source visibility before relying on the setup.

Test the full broadcast before leaving it unattended
- Start a test stream and confirm that the destination receives video and audio.
- Check that the VLC playlist advances through its items and repeats at the end if looping is enabled.
- Test how OBS behaves during a controlled interruption, then check the destination platform’s status separately. OBS recommends testing a stream setup before going live. OBS Overview Guide
- Confirm the destination’s stream URL, stream key, and lifecycle behavior. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential and address information used to accept an encoder feed; OBS retry controls do not override platform rules. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming
Troubleshoot repeated or unsuccessful reconnects
If OBS keeps disconnecting, treat reconnect as a recovery mechanism—not a network repair. OBS identifies unstable connectivity and a bitrate the connection cannot sustain as possible causes of dropped frames and disconnections. Work through the likely causes rather than simply raising the retry count. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| OBS disconnects repeatedly or shows dropped frames | Network stability and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate | Try a wired connection and lower the bitrate to a level the connection can maintain. Lowering bitrate can reduce video quality. |
| Reconnect attempts do not restore the stream | Ingest server choice, VPN or security/network software, network drivers, and physical network hardware | Try another server where available; check whether network software is interfering; review drivers and hardware. OBS points users to their device or motherboard manufacturer for current network drivers. |
| The stream reconnects but the playlist does not behave as expected | VLC source properties, playlist order, looping, and playback through item transitions | Check Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist separately from the output reconnect options, then test the source. |
| The encoder reconnects but the platform does not resume the stream | Destination stream key, stream URL, and platform-side session or lifecycle rules | Verify those settings at the platform and consult its live-stream guidance; OBS retries cannot supersede platform behavior. |
A wired connection is one troubleshooting option, not a guarantee: OBS also recommends investigating server selection, bitrate, network software, drivers, and hardware. A service’s session limit is another separate concern. For example, Amazon IVS documentation states that its streams have a maximum duration of 48 hours; that IVS-specific limit should not be applied to OBS, YouTube, or other services.
