Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. YouTube can then serve a horizontal 16:9 version and a vertical version at the same time. If you use an external encoder, configure separate horizontal and vertical outputs and use the corresponding stream keys.
Choose the right way to make your loop vertical
For most existing loops, start with YouTube Live Control Room’s built-in vertical layout: it can reframe the horizontal stream without requiring you to create a separate portrait feed. An external encoder is the alternative when you need to supply distinct horizontal and vertical feeds yourself.
| What matters | YouTube Live Control Room | Third-party encoder |
|---|---|---|
| How the vertical output is made | Choose a built-in layout and adjust the framing in YouTube’s canvas. | The encoder must send a matching vertical feed as well as the horizontal feed. |
| Setup | Edit the scheduled stream’s vertical preview. | Set the vertical preview to Encoder, choose RTMP(S), and configure a second stream key. |
| Best starting point for a wide loop | Preview Center crop, Fit to phone width, or Stacked. | Prepare a portrait composition suited to the loop; do not assume YouTube will crop the external encoder’s source for you. |
| When to configure | Before the stream starts. | Before the stream starts. |
Switch the loop with YouTube’s built-in layout
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live.
- Open the scheduled stream from the Manage tab.
- In the vertical preview, select Edit layout.
- Choose a layout: Center crop, Fit to phone width, or Stacked. Adjust zoom and position in the canvas, then inspect the preview to make sure the important parts of the loop remain visible.
- Leave dual stream enabled if you want YouTube to provide both horizontal and vertical versions. YouTube documents turning off the vertical output by switching off Dual stream in the Stream tab’s settings.
Which layout should you use?
- Center crop: A portrait crop taken from the middle of the horizontal image. This may cut off logos, text, or subjects near the sides of a 16:9 video.
- Fit to phone width: Fits the horizontal video to the width of the phone view. Check the preview to see how the resulting framing works for your loop.
- Stacked: Places content in a stacked arrangement. Review the preview and adjust zoom or position where needed.
YouTube uses a center crop of the horizontal version by default. A wide loop composed with important material near its edges may therefore need a different layout or careful repositioning. The preview is the practical way to judge whether the chosen treatment works for your particular video.
Set up vertical output with a third-party encoder
Use this route if your encoder can provide separate horizontal and vertical feeds. Changing an uploaded file’s aspect ratio in YouTube Studio does not configure an external encoder’s output.

- In the vertical preview setting, change Auto to Encoder.

- Configure the encoder to send the horizontal feed to its corresponding key and the portrait feed to the vertical key.
- Start the stream from YouTube Studio after confirming that both feeds and the previews are correct.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance provides context for creating a stream with an encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Check the stream before starting
- Set up vertical output before going live. YouTube says, “You can’t add the vertical format once the stream has started.”
- Check the Live Control Room preview for both framing and whether the expected feeds arrive.
- Test ahead of the event, then monitor audio and video quality while streaming. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover testing, previewing, and monitoring.
- If you use an encoder, check its protocol, codec, frame rate, keyframes, and bitrate against YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Recommended settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; they are stream-quality settings, not a way to change the aspect-ratio layout.
What viewers see in dual-stream mode
YouTube uses one shared stream URL and sends one go-live notification to subscribers. Viewers in the YouTube mobile Shorts feed see the vertical version; other viewers see the horizontal version. Both formats share the same live chat. Vertical live streams may also appear while people browse Shorts in the YouTube mobile app, subject to YouTube’s display and eligibility rules. See YouTube’s live streaming guidance for the dual-stream details.

The vertical preview is missing or cannot be enabled
Make sure you are editing the scheduled stream before it starts. YouTube does not let you add vertical format after a stream has begun. If you are using an encoder, select Encoder in the vertical preview setting and configure the separate vertical output and key.

The portrait version cuts off the subject or text
The default center crop removes the sides of a wide frame. Open Edit layout, try Fit to phone width or Stacked, and adjust zoom and position while checking the preview.
The vertical feed does not appear with an encoder
Confirm that the vertical preview is set to Encoder, that you selected RTMP(S), and that the encoder sends the portrait feed to the second vertical stream key. Verify the horizontal feed is also going to its corresponding key.

The stream looks unstable or has poor picture quality
Check the encoder’s protocol, codec, frame rate, keyframes, and bitrate against YouTube’s recommendations for the selected resolution and frame rate. Test before the event and monitor the Live Control Room preview and stream quality while live; a portrait layout alone does not correct an encoder or connection problem.
