A live video feed still has to reach YouTube. For a scheduled encoder stream, the documented workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview, then click Go live. YouTube’s Auto-start setting can change how you start or stop a stream from the encoder; it does not turn on your computer or create and transmit a program for you.
What scheduling does—and does not do
A scheduled stream creates an upcoming event page that viewers can find and, where available, use Notify me to request a reminder. It does not supply the video feed. The event can be scheduled before a feed is arriving, and viewers’ reminders are separate from starting the broadcast. YouTube’s scheduling instructions describe setting up the event; its encoder instructions separately describe connecting and starting the stream.
In short: scheduling handles the event and its timing. Your chosen source and streaming method must still send video to YouTube, and the stream must be started according to that method’s controls.
Check eligibility before scheduling
YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. The general guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 to livestream. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements for the current rules that apply to your channel and location.

Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open the live dashboard: in YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
- Open scheduled streams: select Manage, then Schedule stream.
- Choose how to set it up: reuse settings from a previous stream or create a new stream.
- Enter the event details: set the title, privacy, date and time, and any other details the interface requests.
- Save the schedule: check the displayed date, time zone, and privacy before confirming. The scheduled event can then appear as upcoming, allowing viewers to find it and select Notify me.
YouTube may update Studio labels or layout. If a control has moved, use the current Live Control Room’s scheduling or management area; the distinction remains the same: this step schedules the event, not the video feed.
Choose the streaming method that fits the event
YouTube supports webcam, mobile, encoder, and console streaming. The best option depends on what you are broadcasting and how much control you need. YouTube’s overview of live-streaming methods describes the available approaches.

YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started. Pick the method for your production needs, not because scheduling requires a particular device.
Connect an encoder and start the scheduled stream
For an encoder stream, scheduling and going live are separate steps. YouTube’s standard encoder workflow requires you to send a feed and confirm the broadcast in Live Control Room.

- Open the event in Live Control Room: select the scheduled stream you created in YouTube Studio.
- Copy the connection details: use the YouTube Live server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Configure your encoder: enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder’s YouTube or custom streaming destination settings, then select the intended video and audio sources.
- Keep the key private: YouTube describes the stream key as password-like. Do not include it in a public screenshot, recording, or message. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in the stream settings before relying on it again. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Start sending the feed: start streaming in the encoder and wait for the video preview to appear in Live Control Room.
- Confirm the broadcast: when the preview is ready, click Go live in Live Control Room. This is the documented scheduled-encoder start flow; scheduling or enabling Auto-start is not a substitute for a working feed and this confirmation step.
What YouTube Auto-start means
In YouTube’s live stream settings, Auto-start and Auto-stop concern starting or stopping the stream from the encoder when those settings are on. YouTube’s wording is: “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” The setting is documented for encoder or mobile streams, not webcam streams. See Manage live stream settings.
That is encoder-start automation, not an unattended broadcast scheduler. It does not power on a computer, open streaming software, choose a source, produce a prerecorded program, or guarantee that a stream begins at the scheduled time. The computer or encoder and content source still need to be ready and transmit the feed. If you need the stream to begin without someone completing the usual Live Control Room step, test the exact settings and workflow on your channel ahead of time rather than assuming the scheduled event will launch itself.

Prepare and test before the event
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend setting up an encoder two hours before the livestream and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are preparation recommendations, not eligibility rules or guarantees of uptime. Use the lead time to catch connection, source, audio, and event-setting problems. - Confirm the event’s date, time, time zone, visibility, and title in Studio.
- Check channel eligibility and any live restrictions before promoting the event.
- Verify the encoder is using the intended video and audio inputs and the correct stream URL and key.
- Start the encoder early enough to see a stable preview in Live Control Room; check both picture and sound.
- Keep the stream key out of public materials and make sure anyone who operates the encoder can access it securely.
- Consider a local recording as a backup. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local archive; automatic archiving should not be treated as your only copy. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Copyright and content checks for scheduled streams
A scheduled event does not grant permission to use music, footage, or other material in the broadcast. Before scheduling, confirm you have the rights or applicable permissions for everything you plan to stream, including material in a prerecorded video, overlays, and background music. YouTube may restrict or interrupt a live stream when it detects content that violates its rules or rights-holder claims. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and Community Guidelines. If you publish reused or prerecorded material, assess it under YouTube’s current monetization policies as well; a scheduled live event is not an exemption from those policies.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not start
