No single one of those copies contains everything needed to restore the setup.
What an OBS portable backup needs to include
OBS portable mode keeps OBS configuration alongside the application, but it does not bundle media files referenced by scenes. Profiles and Scene Collections are separate too, so treat them as complementary parts of a recovery plan.
| Backup item | What it preserves | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|
| Exported Profile JSON | Stream, video, and output settings. | Scenes, external media, and the full portable application/configuration folder. |
| Scene Collection | Scene structure and its sources. | The media files referenced by those sources or the Profile settings. |
| Complete portable OBS folder | The portable application and configuration stored with it. | External images and media referenced by scenes. |
| Media and other assets | The files your scene sources need, such as images and video. | OBS configuration, Profiles, or the application itself. |
| Plugin inventory and files | Information needed to identify and restore plugins. | Compatibility with a different OBS version, platform, or architecture; verify each plugin before relying on it. |
Set up OBS portable mode on Windows
OBS documents portable mode for Windows. Its current guidance says portable mode is unsupported on macOS and Linux, so this folder-based workflow is for Windows installations.
- Download the OBS ZIP distribution and extract it to a folder you control. OBS advises against extracting it into
Program Files. - In the portable OBS root folder, create an empty file named
portable_modeorportable_mode.txt. Alternatively, launchbin/64bit/obs64.exewith the--portableparameter. - Start OBS in portable mode and confirm that the expected Profile and Scene Collection are present before using it for your playlist setup.
Portable mode keeps OBS configuration with the application folder. It does not make referenced scene images or media portable: those remain separate files, and their paths can break if you move the installation.

Build a recovery-ready backup
- Export the active Profile. In OBS, use the Profile menu to export the Profile as JSON. Profiles contain stream, video, and output settings, but not scenes.
- Save the Scene Collection separately. Preserve the collection that contains your playlist scene structure and sources. Do not assume the Profile export includes it.
- Copy the full portable folder. Keep a second copy of the portable OBS folder, not just the exported JSON. Store that copy separately from the working PC when practical; separate physical storage is a sensible precaution, not an OBS requirement.
- Collect scene dependencies. Check each scene source for external images and media, then copy those files too. Keep their locations stable or update and validate source paths after moving the setup.
- Record plugin details. Note plugin names and versions and keep installers or files where available. Confirm platform, architecture, and OBS-version compatibility during restore.
- Test the backup. Restore it on the intended PC or another suitable Windows system and check that OBS opens with the expected Profile, scenes, assets, and plugins before depending on it.
Restore OBS portable settings
- Copy the backed-up portable folder to the destination Windows machine, keeping the portable-mode file in the portable root if that is how the installation was configured.
- Place scene media and images where the scene sources expect them, or open the relevant source properties and correct broken file paths.
- Open OBS and inspect the active Profile and Scene Collection. If importing the Profile JSON, use the Profile menu’s import option, then verify the stream, video, and output settings.
- Restore plugins using the current portable folder layout and verify that each is compatible. OBS’s current Windows portable guidance uses a root-level
pluginsfolder; olderobs-pluginsinstalls are identified as legacy. Plugins placed in ProgramData are ignored for portable launches. - Check the complete setup before scheduling or relying on an automated launch. A successful file restore alone does not verify YouTube account access, stream-key validity, playlist behavior, or unattended operation.
Launch OBS automatically—and understand the limit
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. For a Windows scheduled task or another automated launch, its launch guidance says to set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. That provides a way to launch OBS and request streaming; it does not establish that a machine will recover from every restart or failure, or that a YouTube playlist stream will remain available unattended. Test the exact startup and recovery behavior you intend to use.
Common backup and restore problems
- OBS opens with missing scenes: A Profile backup does not contain scenes. Restore or import the Scene Collection separately.
- Scene sources show missing files: Portable mode does not bundle external media. Restore the assets and repair paths if they moved.
- Settings differ after reinstall: You may have copied only the Profile JSON rather than the complete portable folder and the separate scene and media backups.
- A plugin does not load: Check its version, platform and architecture compatibility, and install it in the current portable layout. ProgramData plugins are ignored in portable mode.
- A scheduled task fails to find OBS files: Set its working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe, as OBS’s launch guidance specifies. - OBS launches but streaming does not work: The documented launch parameter is not proof that the YouTube account, stream key, playlist sources, or unattended restart behavior is configured correctly. Check those parts in your own setup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining a playlist PC and its local OBS setup. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It does not stream from a camera.
