You can loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from an old laptop using OBS Studio: add the video as a Media Source, enable Loop, connect OBS to YouTube’s Live Control Room, then test the stream at settings the laptop and internet connection can sustain. OBS can open on an older computer, but that does not guarantee it can encode and stream reliably for hours. Test your exact video, scene, audio, and output settings before relying on a long broadcast.
Check that your channel can go live
Before setting up a long broadcast, confirm that YouTube Live is available on the channel. YouTube requires channel verification and says the channel must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before you plan to broadcast. YouTube also says streamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup requirements and live-streaming restrictions and policies.

Apple 2026 MacBook Neo 13-inch Laptop with A18 Pro chip: Built for AI and Apple Intelligence, Liquid... | $689.00 | Buy on Amazon |
For a test, create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and choose an unlisted visibility setting if you do not want the test to appear publicly.
Set up a looping video in OBS
- Create a scene: In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene for the broadcast. Keep it simple: a Media Source and only the overlays or audio sources you actually need.
- Add the local video: In Sources, select + > Media Source, create or select a source, and browse to the video file stored on the laptop.
- Enable looping: In the Media Source properties, check Loop. OBS will replay the file when playback ends. The built-in Media Source supports formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Consult the OBS Media Sources guide if the property labels differ in your version.
- Check the picture and sound: Start playback in OBS and confirm the video fits the canvas, audio is present at a sensible level, and any overlays remain readable. A high-resolution file scaled down to a small output can still use extra resources; use a source and scene that suit the result you intend to stream.
For a playlist rather than one repeating file, OBS also offers a separate VLC Video source with playlist controls. It requires VLC to be installed; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. For one local file, Media Source is the simpler option. OBS documents both source types in its Media Sources guide. Hardware decoding is an option in Media Source properties when available and is off by default; whether it helps depends on the laptop and file.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to enter the Live Control Room, then create or schedule the broadcast.
- Open YouTube’s stream setup details and copy the stream key into OBS under Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service and paste the key in the stream-key field; the exact labels can vary by OBS version.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- In OBS, click Start Streaming. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health status before making the broadcast public or sharing it.
YouTube’s encoder workflow is intended for broadcasts built from sources such as gameplay, overlays, external audio/video, and other production elements. Its encoder setup guide covers the Live Control Room connection flow.
Choose output settings an old laptop can sustain
There is no reliable universal preset for an “old laptop.” Performance depends on the processor or hardware encoder, output resolution and frame rate, scene complexity, cooling, power, and upload connection. OBS warns that system compatibility alone does not ensure a computer can stream or record successfully. Start conservatively, then test the actual setup rather than assuming a setting will work because OBS opens.
Use YouTube’s encoder requirements as a starting point
For RTMP/RTMPS streams, YouTube specifies H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream through its servers. Its current H.264 bitrate recommendations include:
| Output | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a promise that your internet connection can sustain them. The full YouTube live encoder settings guide includes additional settings and formats. YouTube says the Live Control Room detects encoder resolution and frame rate by default; a custom stream key can be used for manual resolution settings.

- Run an upload-speed test on the same connection you expect to use for the stream. Choose quality the connection can deliver reliably, rather than aiming for the highest resolution.
- In OBS, open Settings > Video to adjust output resolution and frame rate. If the laptop strains, reduce these settings and simplify the scene. Lower resolution reduces encoding load; fewer frames reduce rendering and encoding work.
- Open Settings > Output and configure a supported encoder and stream settings. If using the YouTube H.264 recommendations, set CBR and the bitrate appropriate to the selected resolution and frame rate; use a two-second keyframe interval.
- Run a test stream while watching OBS statistics and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Make changes one at a time so you can identify whether the problem is encoding, rendering, network, or the source itself.
YouTube recommends testing before the real broadcast and monitoring stream health. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide explains how to respond when encoding or rendering cannot keep up.
Test the full loop before leaving it running
A short preview does not prove that an old laptop can sustain an overnight or 24/7 broadcast. Test with the exact local file, scene, audio, overlays, output settings, and network you plan to use, for as much of the planned duration as practical. Keep the laptop plugged into reliable power and use the strongest available internet connection. Watch both OBS and YouTube’s stream-health status throughout the test.
- Make sure the laptop will not sleep, hibernate, or shut down during the planned stream; check the operating system’s power settings.
- Keep airflow clear and watch for heat-related slowdown. Device-specific cooling behavior varies, and no single setting guarantees a long uninterrupted stream.
- Check that the loop returns cleanly to the start of the file and that audio does not stop or become unexpectedly loud at the restart.
- Verify you have the rights to the video and audio. Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; looping prerecorded material does not exempt it from copyright or platform rules.
See YouTube’s live-streaming policies and OBS’s streaming guide before broadcasting content you did not create or license.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The video plays once and stops | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source, or the wrong source is live. | Open the Media Source properties, enable Loop, and confirm that source is visible in the active scene. |
| OBS drops frames or the video stutters | The encoder, scene, or laptop cannot sustain the selected settings. | Lower output resolution or frame rate, remove unnecessary sources and filters, then test again. Check OBS statistics to distinguish rendering and encoding lag. |
| YouTube reports a weak or unstable stream | Upload capacity or stability is insufficient for the chosen bitrate. | Retest upload speed on the broadcast connection and reduce bitrate or output quality. Use YouTube’s stream-health status as you retest. |
| There is no sound or it is clipped | The file has no expected audio track, OBS is monitoring the wrong source, or levels are excessive. | Play the file locally, inspect OBS’s audio mixer while it plays, and adjust the relevant source level before starting another test. |
| The broadcast stops after some time | The laptop slept, overheated, lost power or internet, or OBS/YouTube disconnected. | Check power and sleep settings, ventilation, connection stability, and OBS/YouTube status. A laptop-specific failure cannot be ruled out by a short successful test. |
| You cannot start a live stream | Live access is not activated, channel verification is incomplete, a restriction applies, or the stream key is wrong. | Check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and channel eligibility; allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Confirm the key and replace it if exposed. |
