For a straightforward classroom lesson, use YouTube Studio’s webcam option on a computer: verify your channel, create or schedule the stream, choose who can watch, check your camera and microphone, and test access before students join. First confirm your school’s rules and local requirements if students may appear or be heard.
Choose how to stream the lesson
YouTube offers webcam, mobile, and encoder routes. For one teacher presenting from a computer, the webcam route is usually the simplest. An encoder is suited to a lesson that needs overlays or multiple video or audio sources. Mobile streaming is an option only if the channel meets YouTube’s mobile requirements. YouTube’s webcam instructions and its encoder instructions explain those workflows.
| Method | Useful when | Important requirement or tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Computer webcam | A teacher needs a direct, computer-based lesson stream. | Select the webcam and microphone in YouTube Studio and check the preview. |
| Mobile | You need to stream from a phone or tablet. | YouTube’s current guidance requires at least 50 subscribers, channel verification, live streaming enabled, and no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. A first mobile stream may take up to 24 hours to become available. |
| Encoder | You need overlays, external video sources, or a more involved audio/video setup. | Create the stream in Studio, then enter its stream URL and stream key in the encoder. Keep the key private. |
YouTube’s current guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. Requirements can change; check YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance for the latest details.

Schedule a lesson in advance
In Live Control Room, use Manage → Schedule Stream to set up an event for later. A scheduled event gives you time to share its watch-page link and lets viewers set reminders. Open the scheduled stream before class to verify its details and preview.
Use an encoder
Create the stream in YouTube Studio, then copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Start sending the feed from the encoder when you are ready. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it could send a feed to your stream. Do not put it in a public document, message, or screen share. See YouTube’s encoder setup steps.

Choose who can watch
Set visibility deliberately; the options control discoverability and access differently. YouTube’s privacy settings guidance describes the choices.
| Visibility | Who can watch | What to consider for a lesson |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Anyone can watch; the stream may appear on your channel and in search or recommendations. | Use only if the lesson is intended for a general audience. |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the link can watch. | It normally does not appear in search or your channel’s Videos tab, but a viewer can forward the link. Unlisted is not invitation-only access control. |
| Private | Limited to you and viewers you select through YouTube’s private-sharing workflow. | More restrictive than unlisted; comments are not available. |
If you need a limited audience, decide whether the private-sharing workflow is practical for everyone who should attend. Do not treat an unlisted link as confidential.

Protect student privacy and set the audience
Before setting up the camera, decide whether students will be visible or audible. Frame the teacher and lesson materials where possible, and remove unnecessary names, schedules, personal information, or identifying screens from view. YouTube’s streaming tips caution against sharing personal information during a live stream.
- Check school or district policy before filming students or sharing the stream.
- Check applicable local requirements, which depend on jurisdiction, student ages, and how the recording or stream will be used.
- In Live Control Room, select Yes, it’s Made for Kids or No, it’s not Made for Kids according to YouTube’s audience guidance. A classroom setting by itself does not settle the classification. Review YouTube’s audience-setting guidance.
YouTube’s platform settings do not determine whether your school has authorization to record or stream a particular class. If you are unsure, ask the school or district before going live.

Run a preflight before students join
- Check the shot: Confirm that the camera shows only what you intend to share and that lesson materials are readable.
- Check sound: Select the intended microphone and speak at a normal teaching volume. Listen for low volume, echo, or background noise.
- Check the preview: Inspect the Live Control Room preview and confirm the correct camera and microphone are selected.
- Check access: Open the watch page on a phone or another viewer device and confirm that the people who need to attend can reach it.
- Rehearse if needed: A short private or unlisted rehearsal can expose setup problems. Remember that anyone with an unlisted link can reshare it.
YouTube recommends checking mobile accessibility and monitoring audio and video during the stream. A built-in or school-provided webcam and microphone may be enough; consider different equipment only if you have a specific picture or sound problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.End the stream and review its archive
For a webcam stream, select End Stream. For an encoder stream, stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. After class, check the archive’s visibility and remove it if it should not remain available. Review the audience and privacy settings before sharing or retaining the recording.

Troubleshoot common classroom stream problems
| Problem | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The channel cannot start a live stream. | The channel may not be verified, may have a recent live-stream restriction, or may not have live streaming enabled. | Review current eligibility in YouTube’s live-stream guidance. Mobile streaming has additional requirements, including a subscriber threshold, and first-time access can take up to 24 hours. |
| The intended viewers cannot open the watch page. | The visibility may be too restrictive, the wrong link may have been shared, or viewers may not have been added to a private stream. | Check the stream’s visibility and test the actual watch page from a viewer device before class. |
| Someone outside the intended group can watch. | An unlisted link may have been forwarded. | Unlisted links can be reshared. For tighter access, review YouTube’s private-sharing workflow and your school’s chosen audience plan. |
| The picture or sound is wrong. | The wrong camera or microphone may be selected, or the framing or audio level may need adjustment. | Check device selection and the preview, then monitor audio and video during the stream. |
| The encoder is not sending the lesson to YouTube. | The encoder may have the wrong stream URL or key, or it may not be sending its feed. | Compare the encoder settings with the stream URL and key shown for the event in YouTube Studio. Do not share the key publicly. |
