To show the current song or video title inside a YouTube Live loop, add the title as a text or browser overlay in the scene your streaming encoder sends to YouTube. In OBS, use a Text Source for a label you change yourself, or a Browser Source for a compatible overlay that can read the active item. YouTube chapters can help viewers navigate a recording, but they do not put a changing title over the live video.
Choose how the title will update
| Method | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Text Source | A known sequence with occasional changes, or a person monitoring the stream | Simple and direct, but someone must edit the title when the loop moves to another item. |
| OBS Browser Source with an overlay | A supported overlay that can access the active item or its metadata | May update automatically. Whether it shows the correct item depends on the overlay, its data source, and compatibility; test it rather than assuming YouTube exposes the active title. |
| YouTube description chapters | Timestamped navigation in a video description | Not an on-video live label. Chapters let viewers jump to titled sections of a video. See YouTube’s chapter guidance. |
The title must be part of the encoder’s composed scene to appear over the live picture. YouTube describes encoder streaming as a way to add overlays and graphics, while OBS supports both text sources and browser sources. See the YouTube encoder guide and OBS Sources Guide.
Add a title in OBS
Manual title with a Text Source
- Open the OBS scene used for your YouTube Live output.
- In the Sources panel, select +, then choose Text (the exact text-source label can vary by operating system).
- Enter a short title, such as the song or video name, and add the artist or creator on a separate line if useful.
- Position the text over the loop in the preview. Keep it clear of important visual content and small enough not to dominate the scene.
- When playback advances, edit the source text yourself. A Text Source does not know which item the loop is playing unless you supply or update that information through another supported workflow.
OBS describes text sources as customizable text that can also be read from a text file. A text-file workflow can be useful if another process updates that file, but the file alone does not identify the active item; your player or workflow must provide the right title.
Changing title with a Browser Source
- Choose an overlay that explicitly supports your playback source and the title input you intend to use.
- In OBS, select Sources → + → Browser.
- Paste the overlay URL supplied by its provider, then set its width and height to fit the stream canvas.
- Position the browser source in the scene and check that the displayed item changes at the correct loop boundary.
A Browser Source displays a web page in the scene; it does not automatically know what your video player is playing. Verify the overlay’s access to playback state and metadata, and keep a manual title available if that connection stops updating.

YouTube’s own break-overlay instructions use a similar pattern—copy an overlay URL from Live Control Room, add a Browser Source in the encoder, paste the URL, and set its dimensions to the stream resolution. That break overlay is an away-slate feature, not a ready-made now-playing title tool, and YouTube notes that encoder support varies. See YouTube’s overlay instructions.
A third-party OBS resource called Music on stream describes title inputs including YouTube chapters and video-description playlists. Its listing reports an update on 2025-09-18. Treat it as a community option, not an official YouTube Live metadata feature; check its current compatibility and test it with your exact setup.

Test the overlay before relying on it
- Start a private or unlisted test stream when available, and inspect the preview in YouTube Live Control Room before broadcasting publicly.
- Watch the actual stream from a separate viewer session. Confirm the title is visible in the delivered video, not merely in OBS’s preview.
- Let the loop advance through at least one transition and verify the label changes at the right time.
- If an automatic overlay fails, switch to the manual title or another fallback rather than leaving stale metadata on screen.
YouTube recommends trying a test live stream and checking the preview. These checks follow the documented OBS source workflow and YouTube guidance; they are not a claim that a particular overlay has been tested. See the encoder guide.
Metadata does not grant music rights
A title overlay only displays information; it does not authorize the audio recording or video you broadcast. YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content. If it detects such content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image and warn you; if the content continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A license may not by itself prevent a claim: YouTube says the rights owner may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Be especially careful about building a workflow around Spotify. Spotify’s documentation for its currently-playing endpoint says the platform cannot be used for non-interactive broadcasting and that sound recordings may not be synchronized with visual media. Reading a track title successfully is not permission to broadcast Spotify audio or synchronize it with a video. Check Spotify’s current endpoint terms and obtain the necessary rights for the material you stream.
