Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo rebroadcast a prepared video feed on YouTube, create or schedule an encoder-based live stream in YouTube Studio, connect an encoder with the stream URL and key, test the feed, then start the stream. If you mean sending viewers from an ended stream to another event, use YouTube Live Redirect instead: it hands viewers off but does not retransmit the original video.
Choose the right kind of rebroadcast
| What you want to do | Use | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Send a prepared video feed to YouTube Live as a new event | Encoder-based live stream | An encoder sends the video and audio feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key. |
| Move viewers after your event ends | YouTube Live Redirect | Viewers are directed to a Premiere or another channel’s live stream; the source video is not retransmitted. |
The steps below cover both workflows. Technical ability to send a feed does not establish that you have permission to rebroadcast its video, music, or other content.
Send a prepared feed to YouTube Live
1. Check that your channel can stream
YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and meet YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16. Check your channel’s eligibility before scheduling an event.
2. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create a new encoder-based live stream, or schedule one for later.
- Review the event details and scheduling options. A scheduled stream can create a watch page in advance, giving you time to prepare and share the event.
Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the controls and flow shown in your Live Control Room.

3. Connect the encoder using the stream URL and key
Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room and enter them in your software or hardware encoder. The key identifies the destination stream and lets YouTube accept the encoder’s feed. Treat it like a password: do not share it publicly. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
4. Match the video settings to your feed
Set the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and protocol to values supported by both your encoder and YouTube. There is no single bitrate that suits every stream: YouTube’s recommended encoder settings vary with resolution, frame rate, and codec. Use the current recommendation for the configuration you actually plan to send rather than copying a generic bitrate.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for its documented RTMP/RTMPS workflow and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among the supported video codecs in its settings guidance. Confirm that your encoder supports the feed format, protocol, and output settings you choose; hardware compatibility varies by model.
5. Test the complete feed and start
- Before the event, send a representative test with the audio, motion, and scene changes you expect during the real stream.
- Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Confirm that the watch page plays on the devices your audience is likely to use.
- Keep upload capacity above the stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the stream bitrate.
- Start the encoder and follow the Live Control Room workflow. For a scheduled stream, check the preview and select Go live when ready. Some workflows start the live stream when the encoder begins sending content; follow the on-screen instructions for your event.
Redirect viewers to a later event
Use Live Redirect when you want viewers from an ended stream to continue to a Premiere or another channel’s live stream. It does not send the original feed again.

- Set up the destination Premiere or confirm the destination channel’s live stream is ready. YouTube recommends arranging a Premiere before the originating live stream.
- In YouTube Studio, edit the originating live video and open Customization.
- Add a redirect and select the destination. Redirecting to another channel’s live stream requires that channel’s permission; destination channels can configure who is allowed to redirect viewers to their content.
- Tell viewers that screens may reload for a few seconds during the handoff.
YouTube’s Live Redirect requirements state that the sending creator must have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes.
Equipment and preparation
You need an encoder that can send the feed, but YouTube does not require every creator to buy dedicated hardware. YouTube describes software encoding as an option and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. The right setup depends on whether your source is already encoded and on your production workflow. If you choose hardware, check that the specific model accepts your source and supports the required protocol and output settings.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan for DVR and the archive
When DVR is enabled, viewers can pause and rewind during a live stream, then resume where they paused. YouTube says viewers cannot seek back to a point before the stream began. DVR capability may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. See its pages on DVR on live streams and encoder setup and archiving. If keeping a full recording matters, record locally and verify the finished archive after the event.

Rights, copyright, and channel policies
Having a video file or access to a live feed is not the same as having the rights to rebroadcast it. Confirm that you are authorized to retransmit the specific footage, music, and other material, and check YouTube’s current copyright guidance for the content and use involved. The encoder setup information does not determine whether a particular rebroadcast is permitted or resolve rules for sending the same feed to multiple platforms.
Stream settings solve delivery problems, not rights or channel-policy issues. Keep permission records for content you did not create, and review the rules that apply to your channel and material before scheduling a public event.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Incorrect stream URL or key, or an encoder configuration mismatch. | Compare the encoder’s destination details with Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder. |
| Preview is missing or stream health is poor | The encoder has not started sending, the feed settings are incompatible, or the connection cannot sustain the bitrate. | Confirm the encoder is sending, verify its settings against YouTube’s current recommendations for your resolution, frame rate, and codec, and test again with more upload capacity. |
| Video or audio looks wrong in the preview | The test did not reflect the actual source, or the encoder’s input and output settings do not suit it. | Send a representative test with typical motion and audio. Check source compatibility and encoder output settings before the event. |
| A scheduled stream is not visible to viewers | The event may still be awaiting the scheduled-stream workflow in Live Control Room. | Check the preview and follow the on-screen steps, including selecting Go live when prompted. |
| Viewers do not move to the intended destination | The redirect may not be configured, the destination may require permission, or the sending channel may not meet eligibility requirements. | Review the originating event’s Customization settings, confirm destination permission for another channel’s live stream, and check the sending channel’s eligibility. |
| The archive is incomplete or DVR is unavailable | The stream exceeded 12 hours, or DVR/archiving behavior is limited for that event. | For important long events, keep a local recording and verify the YouTube archive after the stream. |
