Before going public, confirm you have rights for every track and for the live broadcast—and, if you plan to keep the replay, for the archive too.
Before you begin: check channel eligibility and music rights
Make sure the channel can livestream
YouTube says a livestreaming channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and meet its age requirement: streamers must be at least 16. Check the current requirements in YouTube Help before setup.
Clear the playlist for live use
Being able to play a song on YouTube, finding it labelled “free,” or owning a purchased or licensed copy does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it in a livestream. YouTube puts responsibility on the provider to hold the necessary rights, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Confirm that permissions cover live transmission in your intended territories; check separately that they cover an archived replay.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, and unresolved content can lead to interruption or termination. If you have a licence for third-party music, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; even licensed material may be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted. An archived livestream may also receive a Content ID claim after it ends. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Creator Music is not a workaround: YouTube says its licensed and revenue-sharing tracks are for long-form videos and cannot be used in livestreams or Shorts. YouTube points to its Audio Library, original music, or third-party catalogues as possible sources, but you still need to check the licence terms for the specific track and confirm live and replay permissions. Set up the YouTube encoder stream

In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live and create an encoder stream.

Copy the stream key shown in Live Control Room. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the key in the stream-key field. Treat it like a password: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not share or publish it.

Set the stream’s title, description, privacy, and other metadata in Live Control Room. Keep the stream private or unlisted while you set it up if you do not want the initial test to be public.

Build the looping scene in OBS
For one audio or video file

Create a scene in OBS and add a visual, such as a still image, with Sources → + → Image. A live music stream still needs a video picture to send; use artwork you have permission to display.

Add the track using Sources → + → Media Source. Browse to the local file. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among the audio formats Media Source supports.

Enable Loop in the Media Source properties and confirm the source. The file will repeat when it reaches its end.

For multiple tracks

Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC.

In OBS, add Sources → + → VLC Video, then add the local files to its playlist.

Enable Loop Playlist. The VLC Video source also supports shuffle if you want the playlist order randomized. OBS’s documented settings do not establish that this method creates a seamless crossfade between tracks.

Check audio, preview, and start the broadcast

Play the scene and watch the OBS audio meters. Confirm that the correct source is active, the meters respond, and the selected audio device is the one you intend to use.

Start the encoder stream from OBS, then check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Listen for the track, confirm the image appears correctly, and check the stream details before making it public.

Run a short test before the public broadcast. OBS recommends testing, and YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview before starting an encoder stream. These are setup checks, not a guarantee that a particular broadcast will work.

When the preview and audio are right, set the intended privacy and start the public broadcast through the Live Control Room workflow. Keep the stream key private.

Choose the right playlist and music source
A single long file is simpler to configure with Media Source. Separate tracks suit a playlist managed through VLC Video, where you can loop the list or shuffle it. Choose based on how you want to organize and order the music; neither setup grants the rights to stream it.
For every track, check the actual licence for live transmission, intended territories, archive/replay use, and any channel allowlisting requirement. The answer depends on the particular composition, recording, rights holders, and permissions; no blanket “royalty-free” label can settle those details for a specific playlist.

Troubleshooting

YouTube will not accept the stream: Confirm the channel is verified and eligible, and that the stream key was copied correctly into OBS. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the new key.

The video appears but there is no sound: Check that the media source is enabled, the file is supported, the audio meters move, and the intended output device is selected. Confirm the stream preview has audio before going public.

The track stops instead of repeating: For one file, reopen Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a multi-file playlist, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist; verify VLC is installed.

A still image is missing or wrong: Check that the image source is visible in the scene and layered so it appears in the output. Verify the preview before starting the public stream.

YouTube interrupts or replaces the broadcast: A third-party content match may be the cause. Resolve the rights issue; if you have a licence, ask the owner whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. A licence alone does not guarantee that YouTube will not interrupt a stream.

The live stream worked, but the replay gets a claim: YouTube says archived streams can receive Content ID claims after the live broadcast. Check whether your permissions cover the replay and follow the claim process appropriate to your rights.
