Simulcasting—also called multistreaming—means broadcasting the same live program to more than one platform at the same time. You can send a separate output from your computer to each destination, or send one feed to a cloud relay that forwards it to the platforms you choose. YouTube describes both approaches in its guidance on streaming across platforms.
How simulcasting works
Your camera, microphone, or other video source feeds an encoder. The encoder packages the audio and video for live delivery. From there, the stream reaches each viewing platform by one of two routes:
- Direct from your setup: Your local encoder sends an output to each platform. This gives you direct control, but your computer and internet connection must handle the encoding and delivery workload.
- Through a cloud relay: Your encoder sends one feed to a relay service, which forwards it to the destinations you configure. This can simplify delivery to several channels and reduce the work your local setup must do.
Simulcasting does not inherently require new hardware. YouTube lists equipment such as a webcam, external microphone, or headset as typical for encoder-based streams, but these are optional choices for improving or adapting a production setup.
Choose a method for your streams
Consider the number of destinations, your computer’s capacity, available upload bandwidth, how much per-platform control you need, latency and quality settings, and the cost and destination limits of any service. YouTube recommends a local encoder when you have a capable computer and want maximum quality and control; it suggests a cloud service when you want simpler setup, less local workload, or more than two channels. Those are selection cues, not guarantees of performance for every computer or service.

| Approach | What you configure | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct local multistreaming | Configure your encoder to send to each destination. | Creators who want direct control and have a capable computer and sufficient upload capacity. | Your local computer and connection handle the encoding and delivery demands. |
| Cloud relay | Send a feed to the relay, then authorize or configure each destination there. | Creators seeking a simpler setup, a lighter local workload, or delivery to multiple channels. | Service capabilities, supported platforms, plan limits, and costs vary; check current terms before depending on a particular service. |
A relay receives one live feed and distributes it to enabled services. For example, Cloudflare documents simulcast outputs that can be enabled or disabled, while Restream describes multistreaming from OBS through its service. Confirm the platforms and features available on a service’s current plan before choosing it.
Set up a YouTube stream and add other destinations
- Enable YouTube live streaming: Verify your channel and enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this step until just before the event. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Create or schedule the event: In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one. Locate the event’s server URL and stream key for your encoder. Treat the key like a password: keep it private and use the settings for the intended event.
- Choose direct delivery or a relay: For direct multistreaming, configure your encoder to send an output to every destination. For a relay, connect the encoder to the relay and authorize or configure the services you want it to forward to.
- Set up the encoder and test: Choose appropriate resolution, frame rate, and bitrate; test picture and audio; and check the YouTube preview. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers its recommended settings. There is no single bitrate or upload-speed figure that applies to every resolution, platform, and delivery method; make sure your connection has enough upload capacity for your chosen setup.
- Check each destination: Confirm ingest, title, privacy settings, and any platform-specific restrictions separately. Each service may require an account in good standing and its own stream URL and key. YouTube advises checking other platforms’ documentation because their requirements and policies can differ.
- Go live and end the stream deliberately: For a scheduled YouTube stream, YouTube’s instructions say to wait for the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room. End the broadcast from the encoder or platform controls as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
For a relay-specific OBS walkthrough, see Restream’s guide to multistreaming with OBS. The exact controls vary by encoder and relay, so follow the current instructions for the software and plan you use.

Encoder settings, bandwidth, and quality
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your encoder, connection, and every destination can support. Check YouTube’s current resolution, bitrate, and encoder settings, and check the requirements of your other platforms as well. When sending separate outputs directly, your connection must support the delivery load of that method; a relay receives one feed from you and handles onward distribution. In either case, sufficient upload capacity matters, and the right amount depends on your settings and delivery path.
YouTube automatically transcodes incoming live video for viewers on different devices and network conditions. That does not remove the need to select suitable settings at the encoder: the incoming stream still needs a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate for your production and connection.

Protect the event and follow each platform’s rules
- Keep stream keys private. Use the key associated with the intended YouTube event and do not share it publicly.
- Check account and ingest requirements per destination. Platforms can have different eligibility, account-standing, stream-key, and content rules; consult each platform’s own current help materials.
- Confirm content rights and restrictions. Simulcasting distributes your program to multiple services, but it does not make content permissible on any of them. Check that you have the rights needed for the material and comply with each destination’s policies.
- Check each output before relying on it. A successful preview or ingest on YouTube does not establish that another destination is receiving the stream correctly.
Troubleshoot common simulcasting problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | Live streaming is not enabled, or the event’s URL or key is incorrect. | Confirm channel verification and live-stream enablement; check that the encoder uses the server URL and key for the intended event. |
| The video is unstable or a destination fails to ingest | The selected settings or delivery method exceed available upload capacity, or a destination has different requirements. | Review bitrate and other encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance and the destination’s own requirements. Check connection capacity for the chosen delivery method. |
| YouTube works but another platform does not | The second platform may need separate authorization, an account in good standing, its own URL and key, or different settings. | Check that destination’s current documentation and inspect its ingest status and event settings separately. |
| A scheduled YouTube stream has a preview but is not live to viewers | The event may still be waiting for the creator to start it in Live Control Room. | After confirming the preview, follow YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions and select Go live. |
YouTube’s API terms: broadcast and stream
For creators working with YouTube’s Live Streaming API, a broadcast is the event viewers watch, while a stream is the incoming audio-video feed and its settings. A broadcast binds to exactly one stream, and a stream can be bound to up to three broadcasts, according to Google’s API documentation. This describes YouTube event management; it is not a general limit on the number of external platforms you can simulcast to.
