Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo add a lower third on the original Roland V-1HD, send a black- or white-background graphic into an HDMI input, assign the matching luminance key to EFFECTS A or EFFECTS B, then select the video and graphic sources on the A and B buses. Adjust the key and edge blur while checking the HDMI preview output before taking the composite live.
What you need
- The original Roland V-1HD, not the V-1HD+; their manuals and instructions are separate.
- A lower-third graphic displayed by a computer or another HDMI source connected to one of the switcher’s HDMI inputs. The V-1HD’s documented workflow composites an external graphic source; the official material cited here does not establish an internal editable title generator.
- A background video source and a monitor connected to the V-1HD’s HDMI preview output so you can check the composite before putting it on program.
Prepare the graphic as a single frame with the title positioned where it should appear and a uniform black or white background. This preparation is a practical way to use the V-1HD’s documented keying controls; Roland’s cited manual excerpt does not prescribe a particular graphics application or file format.
Add a black- or white-background lower third
- Connect and select the sources. Connect the background camera or video source and the device displaying the graphic to HDMI inputs. The V-1HD has four HDMI inputs. Use the A-1–A-4 and B-1–B-4 buttons to select sources for the two buses.
- Choose the effect bank. Press MEMORY, then use the TRANSFORMER up/down buttons to select EFFECTS A or EFFECTS B.
- Assign the matching luminance key. Use the A/B fader to assign WHT-L-KEY if the graphic has a white background, or BLK-L-KEY if it has a black background, to the selected EFFECTS ON button.
- Enable the effect. Press the corresponding EFFECTS A ON or EFFECTS B ON button. The button lights when the effect is on.
- Check foreground and background. Roland states that the video on the bus where the effect is enabled is the foreground. The A/B source assignment therefore determines which source sits in front. Inspect the HDMI preview; if the background and graphic appear in the wrong roles, correct the source or bus assignment before airing.
- Refine the key. Turn EFFECTS A to adjust the key amount and EFFECTS B to adjust edge blur. Watch small lettering and anti-aliased edges in preview while making adjustments.
- Put it on program and remove it. Once the composite is correct, transition the program output as needed. To remove the lower third, press the same EFFECTS ON button to disable the key.
Choose the right key for the graphic
| Approach | Graphic background | What becomes transparent | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luminance key | Solid black or white | Black with BLK-L-KEY; white with WHT-L-KEY | Best-supported option for text and logo overlays. Avoid using the keyed color in artwork that must remain visible, or those areas may disappear. |
| Chroma key | Solid green or blue | The selected green or blue background | Roland documents GRN-C.KEY and BLU-C.KEY. Lighting or parameter setup can leave color or small artifacts around extracted edges. |
For a straightforward title or logo on a black or white field, luminance keying is the direct choice. Roland describes its purpose this way: “Using luminance keying lets you superimpose logos or text onto a background picture.”
Troubleshoot common problems
The entire rectangular graphic is visible
Check that the effect is enabled and that its key matches the graphic’s actual background: WHT-L-KEY for white or BLK-L-KEY for black. A background that is not consistently the intended color may not key cleanly.

Letters or parts of the artwork disappear
The selected luminance color may also appear in the text or logo. Change the artwork to avoid that color in visible elements, or use a suitable alternative keying approach.
The overlay is missing or appears behind the wrong picture
Verify which bus has the effect enabled and which source is selected on each bus. The bus with the effect enabled is the foreground according to Roland’s manual. Use preview to confirm the corrected arrangement before transitioning to program.

Green or blue fringes and rough edges remain
With chroma keying, inspect the background color and lighting, then adjust the effect parameters. Roland cautions that color or small artifacts can remain at extracted edges.
