If OBS stays on “Connecting” while you try to go live on YouTube, the message alone does not reveal the cause. Check the selected YouTube stream and key first, then verify OBS output and network settings, test upload capacity, and isolate software or local-network problems. Work through the steps below in order; changing a stream key will not fix a weak network path, and replacing hardware will not fix an incorrect stream setup.

1. Confirm the YouTube stream and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Make sure you have selected the intended stream. A stream key tells the encoder where to send its feed and lets YouTube accept it. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
  2. Check for an encoder startup error. If YouTube reports one, its documented remedy is to copy a new stream key from Live Control Room and update the key in OBS. A channel owner or manager can reset the key. After a reset, OBS must use the new key; keep it private because it functions as a stream credential. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
  3. If you sign in through OBS instead of using a key, and YouTube reports a startup error, YouTube directs you to the software provider’s support team. Compatibility may require a software update.

2. Check OBS output before changing network settings

  1. Update OBS to the latest version available for your operating system.
  2. Inspect the video and audio in OBS’s preview and check the YouTube live dashboard for encoder messages. If the local picture or sound is already poor, investigate the source and encoder before assuming the internet connection is at fault.
  3. Check CPU load and, if useful, make a local recording to inspect the encoder’s output. YouTube recommends checking encoder output, dashboard messages and CPU load as part of troubleshooting (YouTube Help).
  4. If the local output looks healthy but YouTube does not receive it, focus next on the outbound connection. Encoding and rendering performance are a separate class of issue; OBS explains that distinction in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

3. Review OBS’s network configuration

OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, recommends testing network-related settings when a connection is failing or unstable.

  • Try a different ingest server. A different server choice can help test whether the selected destination is the problem.
  • Lower the video bitrate to fit stable upload capacity. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point in its general dropped-frame troubleshooting. Treat this as an OBS heuristic, not a YouTube-specific guaranteed setting. A lower bitrate can reduce picture quality.
  • Leave “Bind to IP” at “Default” initially. OBS notes that you can test “IPv4 Only,” then return to “IPv4 and IPv6” if the change makes no difference.
  • On Windows only, OBS lists network optimizations and TCP pacing as options to test.
  • Consider dynamic bitrate adjustment only as a fallback. It can reduce dropped frames during congestion by adapting to the connection, but it does not fix the underlying cause; picture quality may fall as bitrate decreases.

4. Test upload capacity, not download speed

Run an internet speed test and compare the upload result with the total bitrate you are sending. Download speed does not establish how much video your connection can upload. YouTube says total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends spare capacity for reliability. Its guidance states: “That’s primary + backup + 20% is recommended.” The 20% headroom is a YouTube Help recommendation; the retrieved page does not show a publication year. See YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Account for the primary stream, any backup feed, and the recommended margin when assessing whether upload capacity is sufficient. If upload tests show a problem, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider (ISP). Choose settings that give you a reliable stream and monitor stream health and dashboard messages rather than relying on one speed-test result (YouTube Help).

5. Isolate software and local-network problems

Test security software, VPNs and network utilities

OBS identifies firewall or antivirus interference, unstable VPN connections, network-prioritizing utilities and outdated network drivers as possible causes. Test suspected software one item at a time so you can identify whether a change matters. If disabling security software resolves the issue, re-enable it and create an appropriate OBS exception rather than leaving protection disabled. For network drivers, follow the device manufacturer’s guidance (OBS Project).

Test the connection and equipment

Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming; OBS recommends testing a wired connection. If that test or evidence points to a cable fault, replacing the Ethernet cable is a relevant diagnostic step—not a general fix for every “Connecting” problem. You can also restart the modem and router. Potential faulty equipment includes a modem, router, network cable, network card, switch or extender. OBS strongly recommends consulting your ISP if you are unsure before replacing hardware (OBS Project).

6. Match the check to the likely cause

What you are testing Useful check Keep in mind
Stream identity or key Verify the selected Live Control Room stream; refresh the key after an encoder startup error. Copy the new key into OBS. Resetting a key does not diagnose network trouble (YouTube Help; YouTube Help).
OBS configuration Try another ingest server, review Bind to IP and IP family, and adjust bitrate to stable upload capacity. Windows-only network options are not available on every system; lowering bitrate can reduce quality (OBS Project).
Outbound capacity Test upload speed against total stream bitrate plus headroom. Do not use download speed as a stand-in for upload capacity (YouTube Help).
External software Temporarily isolate a VPN, security software or network optimization utility. Re-enable security protection after testing and add an OBS exception where appropriate (OBS Project).
Local network Test Ethernet, restart the modem and router, and investigate a suspected cable or equipment fault. Do not replace equipment before isolating a fault; ask your ISP if uncertain (OBS Project).
Encoder performance Inspect local output, dashboard messages and CPU load. Encoding or rendering trouble is different from an outbound connection failure (YouTube Help; OBS Project).

7. Escalate with evidence

If the checks above do not resolve the problem, contact your ISP and describe what happens, as OBS recommends. YouTube also advises reporting live-stream problems that continue. Include details that help narrow down the failing part of the path:

  • The exact OBS status or error and the relevant OBS log.
  • Whether the stream appears in YouTube Live Control Room.
  • Whether OBS’s local output is healthy.
  • Your upload-test result and the stream’s total configured bitrate.
  • Which server, network, software or connection changes you tested and what changed afterward.

The official guidance cited here does not establish a live YouTube ingest outage or one definitive cause for OBS being stuck at “Connecting.”
