How to capture a URL list locally with Playwright
Playwright is a browser-automation framework. 1. Install Playwright
With Node.js and npm available on your Mac, create a project directory and install Playwright:

3. Save one screenshot per URL
Create capture.mjs. This script makes a fresh page for each URL, waits for the page’s load event, and writes a full-page PNG to an output directory. It names files by list position so duplicate hostnames do not overwrite one another.

The warning for an HTTP error does not automatically prevent a screenshot; error pages may be useful to capture, but inspect those files if you require only successful responses. Failed navigation or capture is logged and the loop continues to the next URL.
4. Choose the capture behavior you need
- Full page or viewport: Set
fullPage: truefor the full scrollable page; usefalseto capture the viewport only. - Element: Locate a target with a CSS selector, then call
locator.screenshot({ path: 'element.png' }). This is useful for a chart or component instead of the entire page. - Format: PNG is the default. Use a
.jpegoutput path and the supported JPEG option when you need a smaller lossy image; WebP is also supported by the screenshot API. Confirm the API options for the installed Playwright version. - Scale: Screenshot scale can be set to CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale. Device-pixel scale can produce higher-resolution output and larger files.
- Responsive size: Set the page viewport to the width and height you want before navigation or capture. A viewport is not identical to reproducing a particular physical device.
When a Mac GUI is a better fit
Shotomatic’s Website Capture page describes a workflow built around pasting URL lists, assigning options per page, running a batch, reviewing results, and exporting individual files or ZIP, PDF, or MP4 output. Documented settings include viewport or full-page capture, desktop, tablet, or mobile sizing, waits, cookies, image format, and quality. How to choose for a repeatable batch
- Batch input: Confirm the tool accepts a URL list and preserves the mapping between each URL and its output. A single-page capture form does not establish batch support.
- Repeatability: Decide whether rerunning a script or manually starting a GUI batch suits your process. A repeatable batch is not necessarily a scheduled background job.
- Capture fidelity: Select viewport or full page, responsive dimensions, and waits appropriate to pages with dynamic content. Cookie state and page loading can change what the screenshot contains.
- Output: Check whether you need individual images, an archive, PDF, or another export, and whether the image format and resolution suit downstream use.
- Privacy and hosting: A local Playwright browser renders through the browser installed on your Mac. Site-Shot’s browser tool is a hosted service. Do not infer data-handling terms from that distinction alone; consult the relevant provider’s privacy and terms pages for your requirements.
- Cost and unattended operation: A free browser capture, paid API access, and a Mac app with unverified price are different propositions. Check current plan limits and whether runs can be scheduled before building a workflow around them.
Troubleshooting a Playwright batch
Navigation times out
Some pages remain active after their load event or load important content later. The example uses a 45-second timeout and waitUntil: 'load'; if the site’s content appears after that, add a deliberate wait for a specific selector or a measured delay before capture. Increasing the timeout can help slow pages but also makes the batch take longer. Do not assume that a screenshot after a timeout represents a fully loaded page.
The output is blank or missing content
Check that the URL is valid and publicly reachable from the Mac, and inspect the page in a normal browser. The site may require login, consent, a region-specific session, or client-side interaction. If content appears only after scrolling, scroll or wait for the relevant element before capture. A full-page setting cannot guarantee that lazy-loaded content has been fetched.
A page returns an HTTP error but still creates an image
The script reports a non-success HTTP status and still captures the page. That may produce a useful error-page screenshot. If your workflow should save only successful responses, change the script to skip or mark the capture when response.ok() is false.
The batch stops on one bad URL
The per-page try/catch in the example logs failures and continues; check that the error handling is inside the loop. Keep the URL beside each result in a log or manifest if you later change filenames from list position to a derived name.

Images are too large or pages are unusually tall
Full-page and device-pixel screenshots can create large files. Use viewport capture when a full page is unnecessary, use CSS-pixel scale when extra resolution is not needed, or select JPEG for photographic pages where lossy output is acceptable. Very tall pages may also exceed tool-specific limits; Site-Shot, for example, states its own maximum heights, which do not apply to Playwright.
Repeated captures differ
Dynamic ads, animations, current timestamps, personalization, and asynchronous content can vary between runs. Use consistent viewport dimensions and browser state, and wait for a page-specific readiness condition where possible. The reviewed documentation does not establish that any of these tools makes arbitrary third-party pages deterministic.
Performance, reliability, and cost
For local Playwright batches, the script runs captures serially: this is easy to reason about and avoids opening many pages at once, but total run time grows with the number of URLs and their load times. Parallel pages can increase throughput, at the cost of more memory and requests; introduce concurrency gradually and respect target sites’ access policies. A URL list should also be validated and retained with its output mapping so failed pages can be retried deliberately.
