Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For sports video, choose a frame rate to match how you plan to play the footage, then start with a shutter speed near twice that frame rate. That 180° shutter guideline gives natural-looking motion; for slow motion, record at a higher frame rate than your editing timeline. Use a faster shutter only when you want less motion blur or need to address a specific constraint—there is no single best setting for every sport.
What frame rate should I use for sports video?
For footage that will play at normal speed, record at the intended playback frame rate. Common delivery choices include 24, 25, or 30 fps; use the rate that suits your project and camera workflow. If you want slow motion, record at a higher frame rate than the timeline so the extra captured frames can play back more slowly.
For example, footage captured at 60 fps and played on a 24 fps timeline can be slowed while retaining each captured frame. The exact slow-down depends on the capture and timeline rates. Fujifilm explains this capture-versus-playback relationship in its frame-rate guide.
Choose the amount of slow motion you need
Pick a high frame rate for the action and the degree of slow motion you actually want, rather than automatically selecting the camera’s maximum. A serve or other very quick movement may benefit from a more dramatic slow-motion treatment; a small, deliberate movement such as a golf putt may need less. Fujifilm gives tennis serves at 240 fps and golf putts at 120 or 100 fps as illustrative examples, not universal requirements.

Common frame-rate and shutter starting points
The shutter values below follow the 180° relationship. They are approximate; camera menus may offer rounded values, and availability depends on the camera and recording mode.
| Capture frame rate | Approximate shutter speed | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 24 fps | 1/48 sec (often 1/50) | Normal-speed footage or a 24 fps timeline |
| 25 fps | 1/50 sec | Normal-speed footage or a 25 fps timeline |
| 30 fps | 1/60 sec | Normal-speed footage or a 30 fps timeline |
| 50 fps | 1/100 sec | Slow motion on a lower-rate timeline, or 50 fps playback |
| 60 fps | 1/120 sec | Slow motion on a lower-rate timeline, or 60 fps playback |
| 100 fps | 1/200 sec | More pronounced slow motion on a lower-rate timeline |
| 120 fps | 1/240 sec | More pronounced slow motion on a lower-rate timeline |
These shutter values are calculated from the 180° rule, not measured sports-performance recommendations. Fujifilm specifically gives 24 fps with 1/48 or 1/50 sec and 120 fps with 1/240 sec as examples in its slow-motion guide.

What shutter speed should I use for sports video?
The 180° shutter guideline means exposing each frame for about half of its frame interval. A practical starting formula is shutter speed ≈ 1 ÷ (2 × frame rate). Nikon describes this as a common filmmaking rule of thumb: shutter angle relates exposure time to frame rate, but it is not a camera law or a requirement for every look. See Nikon’s shutter-angle guide.
At the guideline value, moving subjects retain some blur, which usually helps motion look continuous. A shorter exposure reduces blur and can make fast action appear crisper, but it also reduces the light reaching the sensor. The result can look more staccato, especially when the footage is played at normal speed. A longer exposure adds blur.

Adjust for the look, not a supposed universal sports setting
- Start near 180° for natural-looking motion.
- Try a shorter exposure if you want less blur, then check both image exposure and how the movement feels in playback.
- Use the 180° value as a baseline when recording slow motion too: for example, about 1/120 sec at 60 fps or 1/240 sec at 120 fps.
There is no supported single shutter speed that is best for all sports. The useful choice depends on the action, playback plan, motion-blur style, available light, and camera limits.

- Choose the playback plan. Decide whether the clip will play in real time or slow motion, and choose a delivery timeline such as 24, 25, or 30 fps.
- Set the capture frame rate. For normal speed, match the intended playback rate. For slow motion, choose a higher capture rate based on the degree of slowdown you want.
- Set a starting shutter. Use approximately twice the capture frame rate as the denominator: at 60 fps, start near 1/120 sec; at 120 fps, near 1/240 sec.
- Check the image and movement. If you want less blur, test a shorter exposure and assess whether the sharper, more staccato look suits the action. Confirm the image is still exposed correctly.
- Confirm the camera mode before recording. Check the selected resolution and codec, frame-rate availability, recording-duration limits, audio behavior, and exposure limits. High-frame-rate options vary by model and mode.
Manufacturer examples are model-specific. Insta360’s Ace-series slow-motion documentation lists 120 fps and 240 fps options for supported modes, while Sony’s FX3 S&Q settings guide notes that the faster shutter used for slow motion can make correct exposure difficult. Check your own camera’s manual for the exact mode restrictions.
Common problems and how to address them
- The slow-motion clip does not play slowly. Capture at a frame rate above the timeline rate, then interpret or edit the footage for the intended slower playback. Simply recording at a high frame rate does not guarantee the editing or playback software will slow it automatically.
- The image is too dark at a high frame rate. The 180° shutter value gets shorter as capture frame rate rises, so each frame receives less exposure time. Sony notes that slow-motion recording can make correct exposure difficult. Check exposure and the camera’s available options rather than assuming the setting will work in every lighting condition.
- Fast action looks too blurred. Test a shutter speed shorter than the 180° starting point. Expect less blur and a more staccato motion character, as well as reduced exposure.
- Motion looks unusually choppy or harsh. A very short shutter may be the cause. Try moving closer to the 180° value and compare playback at the intended timeline rate.
- The camera will not offer the frame rate or recording length you expect. Resolution, codec, selected mode, and camera-specific limits can affect high-frame-rate recording. Verify the supported combinations and audio behavior in the manufacturer’s instructions before an important shoot.
