In OBS Studio, use an Image source for a fixed nameplate or a Browser source for a graphic controlled through a web page. StreamYard and Vimeo provide graphics in their browser studios; vMix uses title inputs and overlay channels. Choose the workflow that fits where you produce the stream and whether the text needs to change while you’re live.
What a lower third does
A lower third is a graphic overlaid near the bottom of a video. It commonly identifies a speaker with a name and role, or labels a segment. The video remains visible through transparent areas of the graphic, so a static lower third is usually exported as a transparent PNG rather than a full-frame image.
The important production details are the same across tools: prepare the graphic for your output resolution, place it above the video layer, keep it readable without obscuring important content, and practice the on-air control before the event.
Add a lower third in OBS Studio
- Choose the scene. Select or create the OBS scene that contains the camera or other video you want to show behind the graphic.
- Add the graphic. In the Sources panel, select +, then choose Image for a static graphic or Browser for a web-based graphic or widget.
- Set the source. For an Image source, select your transparent PNG. For a Browser source, enter the URL provided by the graphics service and follow its requirements for dimensions and setup.
- Set the layer order. In Sources, move the lower-third source above the camera or video source. Sources higher in the list render on top of sources below them.
- Position and size it. Adjust the graphic in the OBS preview. Check it against the actual stream output size—not just a cropped preview or a different monitor resolution.
- Check legibility and coverage. Confirm the name can be read at the intended viewing size and that the graphic does not cover a face, captions, or important shared-screen details.
- Rehearse showing and hiding it. A static source can be shown or hidden with its visibility control in the scene. A browser-source service may provide separate on-air controls; learn which control the operator must use before going live.
One service-specific example: StreamSlayers documents adding its Browser source in OBS at 1920×1080 and controlling graphics through its interface; it describes its Stream Deck plugin as optional. That dimension applies to its documented setup, not to every OBS browser source. See StreamSlayers’ lower-thirds guide.

Prepare a graphic that fits the stream
Match the production canvas
For a static overlay, create the graphic on a canvas matching the production output resolution, leave the video area transparent, and include only the visible nameplate or title treatment. Export as a PNG with transparency enabled. StreamYard’s guide uses 1280×720 as a baseline for its 720p workflow; it is not a universal requirement. Use the canvas that matches your own broadcast output. Its guides also describe platform-specific PNG/GIF formats and limits, which may change; check the current documentation before preparing assets: adding overlays in StreamYard and creating lower thirds.
Keep it readable and unobtrusive
- Use concise text: typically the speaker’s name and role, or a short segment label.
- Choose strong contrast between the text and its background.
- Keep the nameplate clear of faces and essential on-screen information.
- Use animation sparingly and inspect the result in the live output preview.
These are practical design recommendations, not a formal broadcast safe-area specification. The right placement depends on your video layout and any captions or other graphics in use.

Choose another workflow when it fits better
| Workflow | Where it runs | Changing text live | What to account for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static image source | Desktop scene software such as OBS | Replace or edit the asset, or pair it with another text workflow | Simple once the asset is prepared; make a separate graphic for each fixed name if needed. |
| Browser-source graphic | OBS or another tool that accepts browser sources | Often controlled through an external page; capabilities depend on the provider | Requires the provider’s URL and browser-source setup. Confirm the required dimensions and on-air controls. |
| Built-in browser-studio graphics | The service’s browser production studio | May offer editable banners or speaker fields | Plan and feature access can limit availability; confirm the current entitlement. |
| vMix GT title | vMix desktop production environment | A title input can be edited; confirm the workflow for the chosen template | Requires a title template and overlay-channel workflow. |
StreamYard
StreamYard’s guide describes uploading assets in the studio’s overlays panel and toggling them while live. Its lower-thirds guide also distinguishes transparent overlays for branding from live banners for changing text, such as speaker names. That combination can avoid exporting a new image every time a name changes. Dimensions, file types, and limits in the guides are specific to the platform and should be checked against its current support documentation.
Vimeo browser production
Vimeo’s Help Center says lower thirds are available when producing through its in-browser studio using “Stream through your browser” mode. The documented workflow creates graphics, adds them to scenes, edits speaker name and title fields, and uses Show or Hide on the stage. The article states that access requires an Advanced or Premium plan, or an Enterprise plan with the Events feature added. Verify current plan availability before relying on this option: Vimeo’s lower-thirds instructions.
vMix
The vMix User Guide describes creating title and lower-third templates with GT Designer, adding one through Add Input → Title, then using overlay-channel buttons for the transition in and transition out. The guide says animation support is available in the 4K and Pro editions, except that included built-in GT templates work in all editions. Edition features can change, so confirm the current vMix documentation for your version: vMix GT title guide.

Common problems and fixes
- The lower third is hidden behind the camera. Move its source above the camera or video source in the OBS Sources list.
- The graphic has an opaque box or covers the whole picture. Check that the asset was exported with transparency enabled and that the chosen image actually has a transparent background.
- The text looks too small or the graphic appears misplaced. Compare the canvas with the stream’s actual output dimensions, then reposition and resize it in the preview. Do not assume another service’s example dimensions apply to your setup.
- A browser graphic is blank or its controls do not work as expected. Check the provider’s URL, documented browser-source dimensions, and separate on-air controls. The exact setup depends on that provider.
- The lower third cannot be shown or edited in a browser studio. Check that you are producing in the required browser mode and that your plan includes the feature. Vimeo’s documented requirements are specific to its product and may change.
- The nameplate blocks captions or a shared-screen detail. Move it to a less obstructive area and test the full composition at output size before the event.
- A vMix title does not transition as expected. Confirm the correct title input and overlay channel are being used, and check current edition and template behavior in the vMix guide.
Or let it run in the cloud
Lower thirds are an overlay workflow, so you still need to compose the graphic in your production setup. If the separate need is keeping a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. This is for looping uploaded videos to YouTube, not a camera-based live production. Start the free first day.
