For a 24/7 stream that viewers watch on YouTube, you generally do not need to buy a separate video CDN just because the broadcast runs continuously. Your encoder sends the source feed to YouTube, and YouTube transcodes it for viewers. A CDN becomes a separate consideration if you also need to deliver the feed outside YouTube or operate your own player and viewing experience.
What a CDN does in a YouTube Live setup
A live workflow has two different jobs: getting the source video to the platform, then delivering it to viewers. In a YouTube-only setup, your encoder sends its feed to YouTube’s ingest service; YouTube then transcodes the live stream into formats for viewers on different devices and networks. You do not automatically need to procure another CDN for viewer delivery because the stream lasts all day.
The word cdn in YouTube’s Live API can be confusing. It refers to stream configuration and ingestion details, including protocol and primary or backup ingest addresses. It does not mean every creator must buy a separate CDN. See Google’s LiveStreams API documentation.
When separate distribution may make sense
If you want to serve viewers outside YouTube, or use a separate player and delivery experience, you may need another distribution service or architecture. YouTube’s reviewed documentation does not prescribe a particular design for that case, so choose based on where viewers need to watch and how you plan to deliver the feed.

What to solve before buying a CDN
Stable ingest and upload headroom
A CDN cannot fix a weak source feed or an inadequate upload connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the stream’s total bitrate. If you send primary and backup feeds simultaneously, count the combined bitrate against the connection. Download speed is not a substitute for checking upload capacity. Review YouTube’s streaming tips and its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; choose a bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you actually use rather than relying on an old copied value.
Encoder settings and protocol
For routine RTMP-family encoding, YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the feed in transit. Check the current YouTube bitrate table for the target resolution and frame rate, then test with the actual encoder settings and upload path. The YouTube Live Streaming Ingestion Protocol Comparison sets out the protocol differences.

| Protocol | Encryption | Codec and workflow notes | Latency trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP | Unencrypted | H.264; supported for standard ingest workflows | Suitable for ordinary streaming workflows; see YouTube’s protocol comparison for details. |
| RTMPS | Encrypted | H.264; the recommended routine choice | Suitable for ordinary and lower-latency streaming workflows. |
| HLS | Encrypted | H.264 or HEVC; supports certain 4K/HDR workflows | Generally higher because delivery is segment-based. |
| DASH | Encrypted | H.264 or VP9 | Generally higher because delivery is segment-based. |
Choose HLS or DASH when the codec or resolution workflow calls for it and the additional latency is acceptable. For routine low-latency streaming, RTMPS is the more straightforward fit. See Google’s protocol comparison and RTMPS ingest guide.
Preview and monitor the real stream
Before treating a stream as continuous, preview it, verify picture and sound, and monitor YouTube’s stream health while it is live. Test the encoder at the bitrate and resolution you intend to keep running. For a redundant setup, test that the viewer-facing player actually switches to the backup rather than assuming failover works. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover setup, monitoring, failover testing, and local archive checks.

Decide whether you need redundancy
A backup ingest address or backup encoder can help with resilience, but neither is a CDN requirement. YouTube’s API exposes primary and backup ingest addresses; whether to run a second encoder and a separate network path depends on your tolerance for interruption and the uptime target you set for your operation. A backup encoder sharing the same power or internet connection may not protect against failure of that shared resource. YouTube advises testing encoder failover; do not treat an untested backup as proven protection.
Professional-grade hardware encoders are optional equipment, particularly for higher-production events. YouTube recommends them for such productions, but does not say every 24/7 creator needs one or endorse a particular model. If you choose hardware, compare support for your chosen ingest protocol, required resolution and frame rate, redundant outputs or failover workflow, and the ability to monitor and preserve a local recording.

Plan for archives and long-running sessions
Do not assume YouTube will preserve a single continuous broadcast in full. YouTube says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If preserving the complete program matters, record locally and verify that the archive file is growing and usable. Alternatively, consider whether shorter scheduled sessions better suit replay and rewind needs. See YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams and turning on DVR.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Copyright and continuous programming
Using a CDN does not grant rights to the audio or video in a broadcast. Before leaving a stream running, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for every video, song, and other material you use, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules. A technically healthy feed can still face claims or interruptions if the content is not cleared. Keep your own recording if the stream’s content needs to be preserved.
