If the internet connection between your streaming computer and the platform’s ingest server drops, new video cannot reach the platform. Viewers may see a freeze, buffering, an offline message, or a disconnect screen; the exact result depends on the platform and its recovery features. Your encoder may keep running locally, but the live feed cannot continue until it can send video again.

What happens when the connection fails

  1. The connection degrades. In OBS, the dropped-frames count may rise if the route to the ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS says it drops frames to avoid buffering and maintain playback where possible. OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting
  2. Viewers see an impaired or interrupted feed. A brief disruption may appear as stuttering or buffering. If delivery stops, the platform cannot show newly captured video; its player may freeze, buffer, indicate that the stream is offline, or show a platform-provided disconnect message.
  3. The encoder may disconnect. OBS warns that dropping too many frames may disconnect you from the streaming server. The computer can still be encoding, but without a working route to the server it cannot deliver that video. OBS connection troubleshooting
  4. Recovery depends on the platform and encoder. Some setups may reconnect and resume delivery; others may end the broadcast. There is no universal retry time or guarantee that a stream will resume automatically.

OBS connects the creator’s computer directly to the streaming service; OBS does not provide intermediary streaming servers. Its local connection statistics help diagnose the broadcaster-to-platform leg, not what is happening on every viewer’s connection. OBS connection troubleshooting

What viewers see—and why their symptoms can differ

If the broadcaster’s upload fails, all viewers may lose access to fresh video from that broadcast. The visible interruption varies by platform and player. Separately, one viewer can experience buffering because of their own network, device, or location even while the broadcaster is delivering a healthy feed. OBS: Streaming video issues

For YouTube Live, automatic transcoding gives viewers output formats suited to different devices and network conditions. It does not replace the broadcaster’s need to deliver a feed to YouTube in the first place. YouTube recommends choosing a quality that is reliable for the broadcaster’s connection, testing the stream, and watching stream-health messages while live. Will the stream reconnect?

Possibly, but do not assume it. Whether a feed resumes depends on the encoder, platform, connection recovery, and whether the platform still considers the broadcast active. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance does not set one retry duration for every platform or encoder.

Twitch Disconnect Protection

Twitch’s official help text says Disconnect Protection can keep a stream online with a viewer message for up to 90 seconds while the streamer reconnects. If reconnection does not happen within that period, Twitch says the stream ends normally; it also says the VOD will be continuous. Availability and settings can change, so check Twitch’s current Stream Settings and support information if eligibility or the exact interface matters. Twitch: Disconnect Protection

YouTube Live

YouTube’s encoder guidance emphasizes a reliable connection, pre-stream testing, and monitoring stream health. It does not establish a universal reconnect window for every encoder and outage. Do not treat transcoding or a viewer’s ability to select a lower playback quality as a fix for a broken broadcaster upload.

Does OBS stop streaming if the internet disconnects?

OBS may continue capturing and encoding on your computer, but it cannot deliver video while the route to the streaming server is unavailable. If the interruption is severe or enough frames are dropped, OBS may disconnect from the server. When connectivity returns, whether OBS and the platform restore the live feed depends on your configuration and the platform’s behavior; OBS does not promise a single recovery outcome for all services.

What to check when a stream drops

  1. Check OBS dropped frames and connection status. This helps distinguish a network-to-ingest problem from encoding trouble or buffering isolated to a viewer. OBS connection troubleshooting
  2. Lower the bitrate if upload capacity is tight. OBS’s connection guide, dated September 30, 2024, gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point—not a guarantee or platform limit. Choose a bitrate the connection can sustain consistently and that is within the platform’s limits. Dynamic bitrate may reduce quality, but OBS notes it does not fix the underlying connection problem. OBS connection troubleshooting
  3. Test an alternate ingest server or service as a diagnostic. This may help determine whether the issue is route-, server-, or service-specific; changing services is not a repair for a particular service outage. OBS connection troubleshooting
  4. Use Ethernet to test for unstable Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. An Ethernet cable can address a weak wireless link between your computer and router, but it cannot restore service during a modem failure, ISP outage, or upstream routing interruption. OBS connection troubleshooting
  5. Check software and drivers. If the problem persists, OBS identifies VPNs, security software, network-prioritization utilities, and network drivers as possible sources of interference or instability. OBS connection troubleshooting
  6. Check local network equipment and the ISP. Restart the modem and router if they appear to have connectivity problems. If that does not help, contact your ISP; congestion or changes along its route may be outside your control. OBS connection troubleshooting
  7. For YouTube, test a representative stream before the event. Include typical audio and motion, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages while live. YouTube encoder guidance

Can a second internet connection prevent an outage?

A cellular connection or other backup path may be a useful contingency, but it is not a guaranteed seamless switch. Before relying on one, check whether your encoder and platform can resume the existing broadcast after the network changes. Also consider whether the backup has stable upload capacity under load, sufficient data allowance, acceptable latency, and a different public IP or ingest route. The sources cited here do not establish that switching connections will preserve a live session.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs pre-recorded video to keep playing as a 24/7 live stream, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video on YouTube, not live camera broadcasts. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free first day.
