Is your smart home already running AI-written code? It is possible, because tools now exist to generate firmware and other software for smart hardware. But available public evidence does not establish whether any particular consumer device—or most smart-home products—contains code authored by generative AI. A device’s AI features are not proof that AI wrote its software.

Three different meanings of “AI in your smart home”

The phrase can refer to three distinct things, and evidence for one does not establish the others:

  • AI as a feature: a device or cloud service uses AI to interpret inputs or provide a function. That says nothing by itself about how the software was written.
  • AI-assisted development: a developer uses an AI tool to generate or help write code. That code may be edited, tested, or discarded before release.
  • AI-generated code in a finished product: code produced with AI is included in firmware or another deployed software component. Establishing this for a particular device requires evidence about its development and release.

A smart speaker, camera, thermostat, or hub may combine software on the device with apps, platform services, and cloud logic. The Google Home developer materials describe APIs and AI-enabled developer assistance, while Amazon’s Alexa Connect Kit describes managed cloud services and SDKs. Neither establishes that code deployed in a consumer product was generated by AI.

AI code-generation tools exist for smart-hardware development

Generative agents can create project and firmware output

TuyaOpen IDE documentation describes an AI agent that can use natural-language prompts to generate a project, firmware, and cloud capabilities in a workspace that also includes app development. The documentation lists ESP32-family chips among its supported platforms. This demonstrates a development capability; it does not show how many commercial devices use its output.

AI models can also produce embedded code without generative authorship

STMicroelectronics’ ST Edge AI Developer Cloud can convert pretrained AI algorithms into optimized C code for embedding in applications and evaluate the output on ST products. This is code generation for embedded AI inference. It should not be confused with a generative language model writing firmware, and it is not evidence that the resulting code is in consumer smart-home products.

These examples show why “AI-generated code” needs a precise definition: one workflow uses a generative agent to produce project software, while another emits optimized code from a trained AI model. Neither capability alone reveals what was used in a particular shipped device.

Why the headline’s “probably” and “can’t avoid it” are not established

There is no independently verified estimate in the reviewed sources for the share of shipped smart-home products containing generative-AI-authored code. The vendor materials document tools and capabilities, not the development history of products already installed in homes. They do not identify which devices contain such code, how much they contain, or whether manufacturers used AI at all.

For the same reason, it is not possible to conclude that a typical household has AI-written firmware, or that avoiding it is impossible. A product being “smart,” having AI-powered features, or relying on a major platform is not enough to establish how its code was authored. The reviewed sources also do not document a reliable consumer method for auditing a device’s software authorship.

Generated code still needs engineering checks

AI-generated output is not automatically ready for a consumer product. Tuya’s Cobuilder documentation says, “AI-generated outputs are not automatically production-validated,” and advises hardware adaptation, functional testing, safety checks, and compliance work before mass production. NXP’s application note, How to Leverage Generative AI to Accelerate Software Development, Rev. 1.0, dated November 5, 2025, cautions that “AI-generated code cannot guarantee compilation success or functional correctness.” It emphasizes human review and validation, particularly where hardware constraints matter.

Those warnings describe development requirements, not proof that any specific device has failed or that vendors are skipping checks. They do mean that the existence of a code-generation tool should not be mistaken for a verified, production-ready implementation.

What research on smart-device software opacity does—and does not—show

A 2022 study by Vijay Prakash, Sicheng Xie, and Danny Yuxing Huang discusses the difficulty of seeing the software components and updates inside smart devices. Within the devices and observations studied, it reports potentially outdated versions of certain components and slow update rollouts for some devices. The study record is useful context for transparency and update practices, but the study did not investigate AI authorship. It cannot be used to estimate how common AI-generated code is in smart homes.

What a homeowner can reasonably conclude

  • AI tools can generate firmware and related software in documented smart-hardware workflows.
  • AI-powered product features and AI-assisted software development are separate claims; neither proves that generative-AI-authored code is deployed in a device.
  • Public documentation reviewed here does not establish prevalence or identify the authorship of code in a specific consumer product.
  • Vendors describe human review, hardware adaptation, testing, and compliance checks as necessary steps before production.
  • Software-update transparency is a separate concern: the cited 2022 study examined update and component issues in its own scope, not AI-written code.
