No—720p streaming is not obsolete. Netflix still counts 720p as HD, and YouTube defines HD as 720 to 1080 vertical lines. It can be a sensible choice on a phone, a limited connection, or a metered data plan. On a larger screen, 1080p or 4K can show more detail—but only when the title, plan, device, app or browser, and connection support that quality.
Is 720p still HD?
Yes. Netflix says its HD label can mean either 720p or 1080p. YouTube defines HD as a video with 720–1080 lines of vertical resolution. So a 720p option is still an HD format, even though it is below Full HD (1080p) and 4K UHD.
Those labels describe resolution, not a guarantee of how sharp a particular video will look. Source quality, compression, screen size, viewing distance, and playback conditions all affect the result.
When is 720p good enough?
Phones and small screens
On a handheld screen, the extra detail in 1080p may be difficult to notice in some circumstances. A 2024 study by Mateo Cámara, César Díaz, Juan Casal, Jorge Ruano, and Narciso García tested 50 participants using four handheld devices. It found no statistically significant perceived difference between 720p and 1080p under the study’s test conditions. That limited result does not establish what viewers will see on televisions, with other content, or under different viewing conditions.

Unsteady or limited internet
720p generally requires less connection capacity than higher resolutions in the platform recommendations cited here. If your connection is slow or inconsistent, choosing 720p may help playback remain steady. Netflix says it adapts video quality to connection speed and can begin at a lower resolution before increasing it.
Metered mobile data
Lower-resolution playback can be useful when conserving mobile data. Netflix notes that higher-quality video uses more data and may use more energy. Exact data use varies with the service, video, compression, settings, and playback time, so resolution alone does not give a universal data-per-hour figure.

720p vs. 1080p vs. 4K

The figures are platform recommendations, not guaranteed delivered bitrates or promises that a stream will play at the named resolution. Netflix’s recommendations are on its help page; YouTube describes its figures as approximate sustained speeds. Actual needs can vary with network stability and other household internet use. Why might a stream only play in 720p?
A 720p ceiling does not necessarily mean your screen is too old. Check the whole playback chain before buying a new device or changing plans.

- The title may not be available at higher quality. Netflix says not all titles are available in HD or 4K.
- Your subscription plan or account settings may restrict quality. Check the service’s plan details and data-use settings.
- The device or connection between devices may impose a limit. Check the TV, streaming device, app or browser, and any connected equipment.
- Your connection may not be stable enough. A speed test is only a snapshot; interference, congestion, and other users can affect playback.
- The service may be adjusting quality automatically. Netflix says it adapts to connection speed and may start at a lower resolution before stepping up.
- Browser playback or licensing can affect YouTube quality options. YouTube says some browser playback is not available in HD, and its licensing agreements determine whether HD or UHD playback is available on a device.

Will a 4K device make 720p look like 4K?
No. A 4K-capable device cannot restore detail that is absent from a 720p source. It may display or upscale the image, but the source remains 720p. Consider a new device only if your existing TV or player lacks a compatible app or does not support the playback feature you need. YouTube’s supported-device list includes Fire TV Stick 4K for Primetime Channels; that listing does not establish compatibility with every YouTube feature, title, or other streaming service.

Does 720p make sense for a YouTube live stream?
It can. A live-stream resolution should fit the source video, intended viewing experience, and available upload connection. Higher resolution is not automatically better if the source has little detail or the connection cannot sustain it. For a prerecorded video that you want to keep live around the clock, the practical question is also how you will keep the stream running: a local computer must remain available, while a cloud service can run the playback without a home computer staying on.
