To add real-time captions, generate them and deliver them to your streaming platform in a format it accepts. On YouTube Live, that means enabling captions and using either automatic captions when your stream is eligible, embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions from your encoder, or a caption provider’s HTTP ingestion feed. On Twitch, send captions through a compatible OBS plugin or encoder. Test captions in the platform’s viewer before you go live; text that is generated but never reaches the platform will not appear to viewers.

Choose a caption method that fits the platform

There are three broad routes: use the platform’s automatic speech recognition where available, send a caption feed from compatible software or a human captioner, or embed caption data in the encoder output. The right choice depends on the destination, language, latency, codec, and whether captions need to remain on the replay.

Method Best fit Important limitation
Platform automatic captions Eligible YouTube Live streams in English where convenience matters more than guaranteed wording Availability is conditional; recognition can make errors, and YouTube’s automatic live captions do not remain on the archived live video.
External caption feed Events using compatible caption software or a captioner, including workflows needing more control over language or text The software or provider must transmit in a method accepted by the platform. YouTube’s event ingestion route allows one feed per stream entry point.
Encoder-embedded captions Setups whose encoder can send EIA-608/CEA-708 caption data in a supported stream Compatibility depends on platform, encoder, and codec; YouTube’s HLS guidance says embedded 608/708 works with H.264 but not HEVC.

For YouTube specifics, consult YouTube Help’s “Live caption requirements” and “Automatic captions” guidance, plus its HLS documentation. Twitch’s “Guide to Closed Captions” describes compatible caption transmission. Platform options and vendor compatibility can change, so confirm them in your current account and encoder before an event.

Set up captions on YouTube Live

Option 1: Turn on YouTube automatic live captions

Use this only if the feature is available for your channel and stream and English captions are appropriate. YouTube’s help information checked on October 3, 2026 says automatic live captions are English-only, require normal latency, and are being rolled out to English channels, with a channel-size rollout note of more than 1,000 subscribers. Treat that as an eligibility condition to verify in your account, not a guarantee that every channel above that size has access.

One device, two ways to enjoy, perfect for both personal use and group fun. For detailed setup instructions, please refer to the product description below.
  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the live stream’s setup or stream settings.
  2. Enable Closed captions, choose Automatic captions, and select English if those controls are available for the stream.
  3. Use normal latency; YouTube’s guidance says automatic live captions are not available with ultra-low latency.
  4. Start a private or unlisted test and check the captions in the YouTube player while someone speaks naturally.

Automatic recognition is not a transcript guarantee. YouTube identifies possible problems including accents and dialects, mispronunciation, background noise, poor audio, overlapping speakers, unsupported language, unrecognized speech, and long initial silence. Review names, specialist terms, speaker changes, and whether the captions cover the whole program. YouTube says the live automatic captions do not remain on the archived live video; separate automatic captions may be created for the VOD and can differ.

Option 2: Send a caption feed to YouTube

Use this route with compatible caption software or a captioner when you need a controlled caption input rather than relying on automatic recognition. YouTube’s event workflow uses a signed Captions Ingestion URL.

  1. In the event setup, enable Closed captions and select the caption ingestion option.
  2. Copy the event’s signed Captions Ingestion URL and give it only to the trusted captioner or compatible caption software. YouTube documents one caption feed per stream entry point.
  3. Configure the provider or software to send captions to that URL. Keep the system clock accurate so caption timing is not undermined by clock drift.
  4. For events using this workflow, YouTube recommends a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. Account for the delay when planning interaction with viewers.
  5. Test the feed in the actual YouTube player and verify timing, completeness, and the replay behavior you need.

YouTube’s documentation lists caption products including Total Eclipse/AccuCap, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net, with version requirements on its source page. Check current versions and compatibility directly before choosing one; the listed requirements may change.

Option 3: Embed EIA-608/CEA-708 captions in the encoder

  1. In YouTube’s event setup, enable Closed captions and choose Embedded 608/708.
  2. In your encoder, enable transmission of EIA-608/CEA-708 caption data. The caption source still has to produce text; selecting the YouTube option alone does not create captions.
  3. Confirm the codec and ingest protocol. YouTube’s HLS documentation says embedded 608/708 works with H.264, not HEVC. It also says separate HTTP POST caption requests work for all HLS ingestions.
  4. Run a test stream and confirm captions appear and stay synchronized in the YouTube player.

YouTube’s documentation says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions. If captions are essential, choose a supported latency mode before scheduling the broadcast rather than discovering the incompatibility during the event.

Set up captions on Twitch

Twitch captions also have to be transmitted to the platform; a speech-to-text program that only displays words locally on your computer does not necessarily send them to viewers. Twitch’s help guide recommends the Closed Captioning OBS Plugin as one route for speech-to-text captions in OBS. It also documents supported CEA-708/EIA-608 embedded captions and RTMP onCaptionInfo/AMF0 caption transmission.

  1. Choose a caption source: for example, the Closed Captioning OBS Plugin for speech-to-text, or an encoder and caption source that can send a Twitch-supported format.
  2. Configure the plugin or encoder to transmit captions, not merely render text as an overlay in the OBS preview.
  3. Start a private or otherwise controlled test and open the Twitch viewer player.
  4. Use the player’s CC button to check that captions are available and can be toggled by viewers.

Twitch’s help page documents its accepted formats, including line 21 CEA-708/EIA-608 and CC1 NTSC field 1. Confirm the current guide and your plugin or encoder’s compatibility before relying on a particular transmission path.

Check language, latency, codec, and replay needs

  • Language: YouTube automatic live captions are English-only in the cited guidance. For other languages, select an external caption workflow and confirm that both the provider and the platform support the language you need.
  • Latency: YouTube automatic live captions require normal latency, and its documentation says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions. For YouTube’s event caption-ingestion workflow, the platform recommends a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay.
  • Codec and transport: Match the route to what the encoder actually sends. On YouTube HLS, embedded 608/708 captions require H.264 rather than HEVC; separate HTTP POST caption requests are documented for all HLS ingestions.
  • Replay: Decide whether viewers need captions after the live event. YouTube automatic live captions do not persist on the live archive; separately generated VOD captions may differ. Verify replay behavior for any external workflow as well.
  • Accuracy and coverage: Check that the caption source handles the program’s vocabulary, speaker changes, overlap, and quiet sections. There is no basis here for promising a particular recognition accuracy percentage.

Test before going live

  1. Identify the platform and the stream’s latency mode.
  2. Choose automatic captions, a human or third-party caption feed, or encoder-embedded captions according to language and event requirements.
  3. Confirm supported caption format, codec, encoder protocol, and software compatibility.
  4. For YouTube event ingestion, share the signed caption URL only with the trusted provider and remember that each entry point supports one caption feed.
  5. Keep the computer or caption system clock accurate when using external YouTube caption software.
  6. Run a private or unlisted test. Check display in the actual viewer player, synchronization, readability, coverage, and the viewer’s ability to toggle closed captions.
  7. Check the replay separately if captions must be available after the broadcast.

Troubleshoot captions that are missing or wrong

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No captions appear in the viewer Captions were generated locally but not sent, the platform caption setting is off, or the selected format is incompatible. Confirm the platform’s closed-caption setting, then verify the plugin, encoder, or caption software is transmitting through the selected supported route. Check in the viewer player, not only the encoder preview.
YouTube automatic captions are unavailable The stream or channel may not have the feature, the language may not be English, or the stream may use an unsupported latency mode. Check the account’s current controls, use English if appropriate, and confirm normal latency. If the feature is unavailable or unsuitable, use an external feed or embedded captions.
Captions are inaccurate or incomplete Recognition can be affected by poor or noisy audio, accents, dialects, overlap, mispronunciation, unfamiliar terms, unsupported language, or long initial silence. Improve the source audio where possible, reduce competing speech, and review critical names and terminology. For material where wording must be controlled, use a captioner or a compatible caption workflow.
Captions drift out of sync Timing or clock synchronization may be wrong, or the caption path may not match the stream pipeline. Check the caption software’s timing and keep the system clock accurate. Retest with the same encoder, transport, and latency settings intended for the event.
Embedded captions fail with YouTube HLS The selected codec may be HEVC rather than H.264, or the encoder may not be sending embedded captions. Check the actual output codec and encoder caption settings. YouTube documents embedded 608/708 for H.264, not HEVC; consider its separate HTTP POST caption route if appropriate.
Live captions vanish from the YouTube replay YouTube automatic live captions do not remain on the archived live video. Check the VOD separately and use a caption workflow that meets the replay requirement; do not assume live captions are retained.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream; it is not a caption generator or a live-camera captioning tool. For a prerecorded program, prepare the video and any needed captions in the media or caption workflow appropriate to your broadcast before relying on a cloud loop.

  1. Upload your recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Frequently Asked Questions

Can viewers turn closed captions off?

Yes. Closed captions are viewer-toggleable where the player exposes a CC control; verify the control in your test stream.

Do OBS subtitles automatically become YouTube or Twitch captions?

No. Text shown only as an OBS overlay is not necessarily transmitted as platform captions. Use a supported caption feed or embedded format when viewers need selectable closed captions.
