You can connect an IP camera directly to YouTube Live if its exact model and firmware support outbound RTMP: create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key, enter them in the camera’s RTMP settings, then confirm YouTube receives a preview. If the camera only provides an RTSP feed or cannot publish to an RTMP destination, use an encoder between the camera and YouTube instead.

Check the requirements first

  • Your channel must be eligible to go live. YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. Check YouTube’s current eligibility details at YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility page.
  • The camera needs outbound RTMP. An IP camera is not necessarily an RTMP encoder. Confirm that the exact model and firmware can push a stream to an external RTMP or RTMPS server. RTSP viewing, or an RTMP server feature, does not by itself establish that it can publish to YouTube.
  • Check network access and stream compatibility. The camera must reach the internet, and its selected video and audio output must work with YouTube’s ingest requirements. Wired Ethernet or PoE may suit some installations, but neither is a universal requirement.
  • Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your model. Menus and supported formats vary. Some features may require a firmware update; TP-Link, for example, flags firmware requirements for its documented VIGI RTMP workflow. See the TP-Link VIGI instructions.

Connect a camera that supports outbound RTMP

  1. Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create a stream or select the one you intend to use. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube explains that the key identifies the destination and allows YouTube to accept the encoder’s feed in its stream-key guidance.
  2. Open the camera’s RTMP settings. Use its web interface or management app and find the outbound RTMP configuration. The exact path is model-specific. For example, Amcrest documents Setup > Network > RTMP, enabling RTMP and entering the URL and key in a custom address field. TP-Link VIGI documents separate server-address and stream-key fields. Use the instructions for your precise camera rather than assuming another brand’s menu path applies. See Amcrest’s setup guide and the TP-Link VIGI guide.
  3. Enter the destination and credentials. Put YouTube’s stream URL in the server or destination field and the stream key in the key field, unless the camera maker’s documented format combines them into one address. Do not add or remove path separators or other URL components unless your camera’s instructions say to.
  4. Match the video and audio settings. Select a format supported by both the camera and YouTube. YouTube’s current encoder guide supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate and codec, so use the matching row in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guide rather than applying one bitrate to every camera. Prefer RTMPS if the camera supports it; YouTube recommends the encrypted protocol.
  5. Apply the settings and start the camera feed. Save or enable the camera’s RTMP stream. Return to YouTube Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder workflow directs you to select Go live once the preview appears. Check that the picture, sound and representative camera movement are correct before relying on the broadcast.

Keep the stream key private

Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in public screenshots or examples. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the stored key in the camera or encoder. YouTube’s stream-key guidance explains its role in accepting a feed.

What to do if the camera cannot send RTMP directly

A camera may provide an RTSP feed without being able to push that feed to YouTube. In that case, run an encoder on a computer or other suitable system: it reads the camera’s feed and sends a compatible RTMP or RTMPS stream to YouTube using the URL and key. Hanwha Vision documents an example using a camera RTSP feed and FFmpeg; this is an encoder workflow, not direct camera RTMP publishing. Follow the instructions for the specific camera feed and encoder, and ensure the encoder stays running for the duration of the broadcast. See Hanwha Vision’s RTSP-to-YouTube guide.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded video rather than broadcast a live camera view, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not a camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Troubleshoot common connection problems

  • YouTube shows no incoming feed: Confirm the camera’s RTMP feature is enabled, the URL and key are in the correct fields, and the camera can reach the internet. Check whether its interface combines the URL and key into a single address, and compare your entries with the camera maker’s instructions.
  • The key is rejected: Make sure you copied the key for the intended stream and did not introduce extra characters. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the camera or encoder with the replacement.
  • The preview appears but video or audio is missing: Check the camera’s selected main-stream codec and audio settings against both YouTube’s ingest guide and the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance. A format accepted by YouTube is not necessarily supported by every camera workflow. TP-Link’s VIGI instructions, for example, specify H.264/H.264+ for the main stream and describe an audio compatibility limitation.
  • The preview is unstable or has quality warnings: Verify the output resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval against the corresponding YouTube guide row. Keep CBR enabled where supported, and use a keyframe interval of two seconds as recommended, not exceeding four seconds.
  • The camera has RTSP but no outbound RTMP option: Use an encoder that can read the camera’s RTSP feed and publish to YouTube, as in the Hanwha Vision example, rather than treating an RTSP address as an RTMP destination.
