Check whether your connection can carry a 24/7 YouTube stream by comparing stable upload capacity at the streaming computer with the encoder’s bitrate, allowing at least 20% headroom and including any backup stream sent at the same time. Then run a representative test, watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and your encoder’s dropped-frame count, and test failover separately. A speed test is a snapshot, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
1. Find the upload capacity your stream needs
Start with the encoder’s actual output settings: codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Use YouTube’s live encoder guidance, not its separate recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (maximum four seconds), and RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its ingest system. The published bitrate figures below are H.264 live-stream recommendations; other codecs, including AV1 and H.265, may have different recommendations at the same resolution and frame rate. These are encoder bitrate recommendations, not internet-plan speeds that guarantee a reliable stream. The connection needs enough upload capacity to sustain the configured bitrate, with room for variation and other traffic.
Calculate a planning minimum
YouTube recommends leaving 20% spare upload bandwidth and says to count the primary stream plus any backup stream sent concurrently. Use this calculation:

Planning upload capacity ≈ (primary bitrate + simultaneously sent backup bitrate) × 1.20
For example, a 10 Mbps primary stream with no concurrent backup calls for about 12 Mbps of available upload capacity under this planning rule. If a backup encoder also sends a 10 Mbps stream at the same time, plan for about 24 Mbps. The 20% factor is guidance, not a guarantee: congestion, unrelated uploads, outages, Wi-Fi interference and routing problems can still cause interruptions. 2. Measure upload speed where the stream will run
- Use the computer and network connection that will send the stream. Run a speed test and note the upload result; download speed alone does not show whether the encoder has enough outbound capacity.
- Repeat at different times and during typical household or workplace network use. Other people or devices sharing the connection may consume upload capacity. YouTube recommends checking outbound bandwidth against stream bitrate but does not prescribe a fixed number of tests or a testing schedule.
- Compare the available upload capacity with the planning calculation above. Leave room for other devices and uploads instead of treating the full speed-test result as dedicated to the encoder.
For a computer-based stream, YouTube recommends a wired Ethernet connection. OBS also recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable. If the computer is on Wi-Fi, test again over Ethernet if possible; connect it to the router or switch with an Ethernet cable that fits the ports available. A cable can avoid some wireless instability, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by the internet connection.
There is no universal upload-speed, latency, jitter or packet-loss threshold established in the reviewed official guidance that guarantees a 24/7 YouTube stream. A high result on one test therefore cannot prove that the connection will remain reliable around the clock.

3. Test the entire stream path before relying on it
- Configure the encoder with the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR mode and keyframe interval. Confirm that it is sending to YouTube using the intended stream key and RTMPS endpoint where supported.
- Send a test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. A static test image or silent feed may not reveal issues that appear with the actual content and settings.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages, and confirm that the stream is accessible on the channel’s watch page. YouTube also recommends checking playback on mobile and monitoring audio and video during an event. Follow its streaming tips.
- Keep the test running long enough to observe the network and usage patterns you expect in normal operation. This is a practical precaution, not a YouTube-published test duration or guarantee.
- If you rely on local recording, verify that it is recording and that the files are being saved where expected.
4. Prove that backup failover works
A backup encoder or connection only helps if it is configured correctly and takes over when needed. Test the actual failover arrangement before depending on it. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then checking that playback rolls over to the backup. - Observe the YouTube player during the test; do not assume failover worked just because the backup encoder is running.
- Check that the backup’s stream settings meet YouTube’s current requirements for the configured failover setup.
- If both encoders transmit simultaneously, add the backup’s bitrate to the bandwidth calculation. A backup that begins transmitting only after the primary stops has a different concurrent upload load.
5. Diagnose dropped frames and stream interruptions
OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its stream connection troubleshooting guide is dated September 30, 2024. Use the encoder’s dropped-frame count alongside YouTube’s stream-health messages; neither a good preview nor a single speed test rules out a network problem.

OBS lists VPNs and some network-optimization tools as possible sources of interference, as well as outdated network drivers and modem/router connectivity issues. Change one factor at a time where possible so you can tell whether the connection improves.
6. Account for YouTube’s 24/7 archive and DVR limits
Connectivity is not the only issue with a continuous stream. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive at all, while streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. If you need a durable recording, verify your own local recording workflow instead of assuming YouTube will retain the full broadcast. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
