There is no single best frame rate for every live stream. Start at 30 frames per second (fps) for low-motion content such as a talk or presentation, or when upload bandwidth or encoding capacity is limited. Choose 60 fps when smoother motion materially helps—such as in gameplay or sports—and your platform, bitrate, connection, and encoder can sustain it.
Frame rate is only one part of the picture. Resolution, bitrate, codec, motion in the scene, and available processing power all affect the result. More frames do not automatically make a stream look better.
Should you stream at 30 or 60 fps?
| Choose | Good fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 30 fps | Talks, presentations, and other mostly stationary scenes; setups with limited upload or encoding headroom. | Whether the platform’s bitrate guidance suits your resolution and codec, and whether the encoder stays stable. |
| 60 fps | Gameplay, sports, or other content where fast movement benefits from smoother motion. | Whether the platform supports 60 fps and your bitrate, upload connection, and encoder can sustain the higher workload. |
This is a practical starting point, not a universal rule or a claim about viewer preference. YouTube Live supports up to 60 fps. For other platforms, check their current ingest settings rather than assuming the same limits or recommendations apply.
How frame rate affects stream quality
At a given resolution, raising frame rate means encoding more frames each second. The result depends on how much bitrate is available, how efficiently the chosen codec and encoder compress video, how much motion is on screen, and whether the computer can keep up. If bitrate is insufficient for a fast-moving scene, detail can break into blocky artifacts. If the encoder or system is overloaded, viewers may see skipped frames or distortion.

Resolution and motion compete for bitrate
A stream that looks poor at 1080p may improve if you lower the resolution rather than insist on keeping it. Motion is harder to compress than a largely static image, so resolution that works for a talking head may not hold up for fast gameplay at the same bitrate. OBS and NVIDIA both describe lowering resolution as a way to reduce load or improve results in constrained, motion-heavy cases.
Encoding capacity matters too
The encoder preset and the resolution and frame rate being processed affect system load. OBS says to reduce resolution or FPS if the computer cannot handle the settings. A dedicated hardware encoder can be an option on supported systems; NVIDIA documents NVENC hardware in GeForce RTX GPUs, but that applies to supported NVIDIA hardware and does not mean every streamer needs a graphics-card upgrade.

YouTube Live settings: frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and calls for a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Its recommended ingest bitrates vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. The figures below are YouTube recommendations, not universal settings or a guarantee of quality.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
Use the row for your intended resolution, frame rate, and codec, then check that your upload connection can carry the stream reliably. These are ingest recommendations for YouTube; other platforms may publish different limits and settings.

How to choose and test your frame rate
- Start with the content. For a talk or presentation with little movement, try 30 fps. For fast gameplay or sports, consider 60 fps if smoother motion matters to the presentation.
- Check the destination platform. Confirm its current supported frame rates and encoder recommendations for your codec and resolution. YouTube supports up to 60 fps; its bitrate recommendations are listed above.
- Check upload capacity. YouTube recommends running an upload speed test. A connection that cannot reliably carry the chosen settings is a reason to reduce the demands of the stream.
- Test a representative scene before the event. Include movement and audio similar to what you will stream. YouTube specifically recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.
- Adjust based on what fails. If motion looks blocky at the available bitrate, try reducing resolution. If OBS reports encoding overload, or the stream shows skipped frames or distortion, reduce resolution or frame rate and test again.
Common frame-rate problems and fixes
- Fast movement looks blocky: The bitrate may be insufficient for the combination of resolution, frame rate, codec, and motion. Try lowering resolution, especially if the scene is motion-heavy, and compare the result in a representative test.
- OBS reports “Encoding overloaded!” or the picture skips or distorts: The computer may not be able to process the selected settings. OBS recommends reducing resolution and FPS to lower the load. Re-test before the event.
- The stream is unstable despite apparently suitable settings: Verify upload speed and stream health rather than relying on a single speed reading. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health.
- You are unsure whether to use a hardware encoder: First identify whether the problem is encoding load and check that the platform supports the codec and hardware path you intend to use. NVIDIA’s NVENC guidance applies to supported NVIDIA systems, not all computers.
