In Wowza Streaming Engine, a stream source is the incoming live feed, identified by its URI. A .stream file stores that URI under a convenient name; MediaCaster uses the file to pull the feed into a live application so a player can access it. The file is an alias, not the video feed itself.
How a Wowza stream source works
The workflow has three parts: an upstream source sends or serves a feed, a stream file records its source address, and MediaCaster connects that source to a live application. Players can use the stream-file name in a playback URL instead of a long or complex source address. Wowza’s guide describes stream-file sources as on demand: a player’s first request makes the referenced source available, and MediaCaster waits through a timeout after the last viewer leaves before stopping it if no new request arrives. See Wowza’s stream-file guide for the current workflow.
Choose the MediaCaster type for the source
Match MediaCaster to the input protocol and source mode—not just to the kind of content being carried. For example, MPEG-TS over TCP/IP has a different selection from other MPEG-TS sources.
| Incoming source | MediaCaster type | Selection note |
|---|---|---|
| RTSP/RTP IP camera, native RTP encoder, or MPEG-TS encoder using the guide’s RTP source workflow | rtp |
Confirm the device’s actual output mode. |
| SHOUTcast or Icecast stream | shoutcast |
For the audio-stream source family. |
| RTMP or WOWZ pulled from another Wowza Streaming Engine instance | liverepeater |
Use this pull method rather than treating the input as RTP. |
| Apple HLS live source | applehls |
Check the installed Engine release for support. |
| MPEG-TS over TCP/IP | mpegtstcp |
Choose this for MPEG-TS over TCP/IP specifically. |
| SRT source | srt |
Check the installed Engine release and source-side mode. |
The guide lists historical minimum versions of Streaming Engine 4.5.0.01 for applehls, 4.5.0.02 for mpegtstcp, and 4.7.2 on Linux or 4.7.3 on Windows for srt. These are documented minimums, not a substitute for checking current release documentation and the requirements of your deployment.

- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Add a source in Streaming Engine Manager
- Create a live application. In Streaming Engine Manager, create or select the live application that will host the source.
- Add a stream file. Open Stream Files, add a file, give it a name, and enter the source URI. Wowza’s guide says to use the IP address of the server hosting the stream as the Stream URI. Make sure the address and any required port are reachable from the Engine server.
- Set per-stream options only if needed. If this source needs settings different from the application defaults, configure per-stream settings for the relevant stream type. They override application-level configuration only where those settings apply. Consult the per-stream settings reference for supported properties and protocol scope.
- Connect the stream file. Select the file, choose the live application, and choose the MediaCaster type that matches the source protocol and mode.
- Request playback. In the documented on-demand workflow, request the stream from a player using the application’s playback URL and stream-file name. A request initiates source availability; allow for the source connection and verify playback.
Pulling an SRT source into Streaming Engine
For a Streaming Engine stream file, Wowza gives the example URI form srt://0.0.0.0:[port] and lists srt as the MediaCaster type. Treat the address as a documented example, not a universal value: determine the correct interface, port, and SRT mode for the source and host, and verify network reachability before testing playback.
Do not copy Wowza Video’s connection details into a self-hosted Streaming Engine setup. Wowza Video is a separate cloud product: its encoder guide describes an SRT listener-mode handshake, a connection URL pattern of srt://[stream key].[primary server], and host port 10000 as the default. Those details apply to Wowza Video, not to the Streaming Engine stream-file example. The Wowza Video instructions were updated February 8, 2024; check its current SRT encoder guide when configuring that service.

Fix common source-connection problems
- RTMP source stays in “waiting for stream.” Check that the URI is valid, the upstream is active, credentials are correct if required, and the host can reach the source. If pulling RTMP or WOWZ from another Streaming Engine instance, verify that MediaCaster is
liverepeater, notrtp. Wowza staff recommended that mapping in a reported RTMP case, and the current guide documents it for this source family; it is not a diagnosis for every connection failure. - The stream file connects but playback does not start. Confirm that the player request uses the right live application and stream-file name, and that the source is available at the URI. In the on-demand flow, a player request is what triggers source availability.
- A camera or encoder cannot be pulled. Confirm the device’s actual output protocol and mode, then select the matching MediaCaster type. A source carrying MPEG-TS is not automatically an
mpegtstcpsource; that type is for MPEG-TS over TCP/IP. - SRT fails at connection time. Verify the configured address and port, reachability through firewalls and routing, source-side SRT mode, and compatibility with the installed Engine release. Do not substitute Wowza Video’s connection URL or default port for a self-hosted Engine configuration.
- Per-stream changes have no effect. Check that the property applies to the source protocol and stream type in use. Per-stream configuration does not override every application setting for every source.
Keep the source and the content rights clear
Wowza’s stream-source setup explains how to ingest and expose a feed; it does not grant rights to the material being sent. Before streaming, make sure you have permission to use the video, audio, and other content, and check the applicable platform rules. For prerecorded video streamed continuously to YouTube, the separate copyright safety checklist can help you review rights considerations.
