1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsScreenshot change detection flags different fonts because it compares rendered pixels, not whether the change was intentional. A new typeface changes letter shapes; different font measurements can also change line breaks, text block heights, and the position of nearby content. If a capture happens before a web font loads, the same page can even produce one screenshot with a fallback font and another with the intended font.
What a font change does to a screenshot diff
A visual regression test compares a new screenshot with a saved baseline. Different glyph outlines create pixel differences around the text, even when the words and CSS appear unchanged. If the fonts have different widths or vertical metrics, text may wrap differently or take up more space, shifting other elements and creating a much larger changed area.
There are two common cases to distinguish:
- The rendered font really changed: a CSS or deployment change, a changed font file, a missing font, or a different set of installed fonts can alter the result.
- The capture caught a different loading state: one screenshot used a fallback while the web font was still loading; another captured the final font.
These causes can look similar in a diff, but they need different fixes. First establish whether the intended font loaded; then check whether the test environment and capture timing match.
Why the same page can render differently
Font loading can race the screenshot
Web fonts load asynchronously. With a flash of unstyled text (FOUT), fallback text appears before the web font replaces it. With a flash of invisible text (FOIT), text is hidden while the browser waits, but the fallback font can still determine layout. Google web.dev notes that both approaches can cause layout shifts. Google’s guidance on optimizing Cumulative Layout Shift explains these font-loading behaviors.

Rendering depends on the test host
Browser and operating-system rendering, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can all influence screenshot output. Playwright warns that rendering can vary with these factors and recommends creating and comparing screenshots in the same environment. If cross-browser or cross-platform appearance is what you are testing, maintain separate baselines for those environments rather than treating their differences as one shared baseline. Playwright’s visual comparison documentation describes these considerations.
How to diagnose and fix font-related diffs
- Reproduce the baseline environment. Use the same operating-system image, browser and browser version, settings, and headless mode for baseline creation and test runs. If the test deliberately covers different browsers or platforms, compare each against its own reviewed baseline.
- Verify the font actually used. In browser developer tools, inspect the element’s computed font family and weight, then check the network panel for the expected font file and any failed request. Confirm that the file loaded and that the page selected the intended face rather than a fallback.
- Capture a deterministic font state. Start the screenshot only after the page has reached the font state the test is meant to assess. Do not rely on one arbitrary sleep value: there is no universal wait interval for every page, font, or runner. Waiting for the settled state is useful for checking the final design, but it can conceal a loading shift that users experience, so test that behavior separately if it matters.
- Reduce layout movement where appropriate. Choose a suitable fallback stack and, where they fit the fonts and design, use metric overrides such as
size-adjust,ascent-override,descent-override, orline-gap-override. Considerfont-display: optionalor preloading critical fonts selectively; these are design and loading choices, not universal fixes. Google’s CLS guidance explains font-related shifts and these techniques. - Find when layout moves. In Chrome DevTools, record the page in the Performance panel and inspect the layout-shift track. It can show when shifts happen and which elements moved; the affected elements are not necessarily the root cause. See Chrome for Developers’ layout-shift guidance.
- Set diff tolerance only after review. Playwright provides options such as
maxDiffPixelsand stylesheets for removing dynamic or volatile content from a capture. Use a threshold only for variation you have reviewed and decided is acceptable: a broad allowance can hide a real font or layout regression. Update the baseline only after confirming that the visual change is intended; Playwright documents updating snapshots with its update-snapshots command.
Google web.dev’s CLS target is 0.1 or less for at least 75% of page visits, a page-level user-experience goal. It is not a recommended screenshot-diff threshold.

Choose a remedy based on the cause
| Response | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Standardize browser and operating-system environment | Differences correlate with CI hosts, browser versions, or platforms. | Does not fix a font-loading race within a run. |
| Control the font state before capture | Intermittent screenshots show fallback in some runs and the web font in others. | Waiting for the settled state can miss a shift visible during initial rendering. |
| Improve fallback metrics or font loading | A font swap moves text or surrounding layout. | Requires choosing CSS and loading behavior appropriate to the page; preload should be selective. |
| Tune pixel tolerance | Small rendering variations remain after stabilizing the environment and font state. | Loose thresholds may mask meaningful visual changes. |
| Keep separate baselines per browser or platform | Cross-environment appearance is deliberately under test. | More baselines need review and maintenance. |
Common troubleshooting cases
- Only CI fails: check whether the CI operating-system image, browser version, headless mode, or font availability differs from the baseline environment. Make those consistent or maintain environment-specific baselines.
- Failures come and go on the same runner: compare the font request and computed font at capture time. A failed or still-pending font request points to loading or timing, not necessarily an intentional design change.
- The text matches but the whole page shifts: compare font metrics and line wrapping, then inspect the Performance panel’s layout-shift track. A moved region may be downstream of the text whose dimensions changed.
- Increasing tolerance makes the test pass: review the diff before keeping the change. A threshold can absorb harmless pixel variation, but it can also hide an unintended font substitution or layout movement.
- The baseline changed after a deliberate typography update: verify the intended font and layout in the relevant environments, then update the affected baselines rather than weakening the diff check globally.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API returns a screenshot or PDF with one GET request; it accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Those cleanup steps can each be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. The example below captures the settled page only if your own workflow determines when to call it; it does not by itself verify that a particular web font has loaded.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
