To stream a live camera or encoder feed through Wowza Video, first confirm that your account can still create a cloud-hosted live stream: Wowza’s documentation index describes the service as legacy, though setup guides remain available. If your account has access, create the stream, choose a processing region near the source, connect a compatible input, select an output mode, and share a hosted page or embed. Availability, regions, and account features can vary, so verify them before building a production workflow.
Before you set up: confirm Wowza Video access
Wowza’s current documentation index labels its cloud-hosted service as legacy. That does not establish that every account is unavailable, but it means published setup instructions alone are not proof that a new account or deployment can use the service. Check your current Wowza account and service terms for stream creation, regions, and feature availability before scheduling an event. Wowza documentation index
Create a live stream in Wowza Video
- In Wowza Video, open Live streams, choose Add new, then select Go Live Now.
- Enter a title for the stream.
- Choose a processing region near the physical location of your camera or encoder. Wowza recommends a nearby region to reduce network distance and latency; available regions and features may differ.
- Select the source or input type. For supported protocol inputs, retrieve the generated connection details from the stream’s details page. Some encoders and cameras use a specialized connection method.
- Choose the viewer destination during setup if you need a Wowza-hosted page. Wowza’s setup guide says this page cannot be added after stream creation.
Wowza’s quick-start guide covers the flow and viewing options. Its detailed Live Stream Setup page guide describes configurable sources and settings.
Connect a camera or encoder
Use the connection method selected for the stream and enter the generated address and credentials in your source device or encoder. Match the input to the protocol and codec that the device can send; do not assume that a camera’s network connection alone makes it compatible.

Supported input paths in the setup guide
Wowza’s setup guide lists RTMP, RTSP, SRT, browser WebRTC, stream from file, UDP, IP camera, and Wowza Streaming Engine inputs. The exact interface and availability should be checked in the account you will use.
IP cameras and source URLs
For an IP camera, the guide specifies RTSP and H.264 support and requires the camera’s source URL. Camera URL formats differ, so consult the device manual for the precise path, authentication format, and any port requirements. The guide lists default ports of TCP 1935 for RTMP and TCP 554 for RTSP; if a source uses a non-default port, include it in its URL. These are details from Wowza’s setup guide, updated 2024-02-08, and should be rechecked against the current interface and device documentation.

SRT and variable networks
Wowza describes SRT as an open-source transport protocol designed for secure, high-quality, low-latency delivery over unpredictable network conditions. That is the protocol’s intended use, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection or stream will meet a latency or quality target. Wowza’s setup guide
Choose adaptive bitrate or passthrough
The right processing mode depends on whether viewers need multiple playback renditions and whether your subscription and region support passthrough.

| Mode | What viewers receive | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Adaptive bitrate | Multiple transcoded renditions at different sizes and bitrates, allowing playback to adapt to device and bandwidth. | Rendition counts in Wowza’s setup documentation are configuration examples, not performance guarantees. The guide specifies 6 bitrate renditions for a 1920 × 1080 16:9 source and 7 for a source up to 3840 × 2160. |
| Passthrough | A single output rendition matching the source characteristics, without transcoding. | Wowza’s passthrough documentation says it requires a qualifying 24×7 subscription, is available only in selected regions, and does not support 4K. Confirm eligibility in your account. |
Use adaptive bitrate when a range of devices and connection speeds matters. Consider passthrough only if its one-rendition behavior fits your delivery needs and your plan and region qualify. The current feature matrix is not established for every account. See Wowza’s setup guide and passthrough guide.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Start, monitor, and stop the stream
Start the stream using the controls in Wowza Video or the relevant encoder workflow, then confirm that the source is connected and that the viewer page or embed plays. At the end of the event, stop the stream promptly. Wowza’s getting-started guide warns that transcoding charges can accrue for a started stream even when it is not actively receiving content. It says idle streams stop automatically after 20 minutes, but recommends stopping as soon as the event ends. That timing is from the guide and is not a substitute for checking current account billing terms. Wowza quick-start guide

Use the REST API for a code-driven workflow
The basic UI flow does not require an API. For automation, Wowza Developer documents a WebRTC workflow using the Wowza Video 2.0 REST API: create a live stream, connect the source, deliver to a Wowza-hosted player page, and start or stop the stream programmatically. Follow the API documentation for current authentication, request formats, and account access rather than assuming the UI steps map one-to-one to API calls. Wowza Video 2.0 REST API WebRTC quick start
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The account cannot create a stream: check current service availability and account eligibility first. Wowza’s documentation index calls the cloud-hosted service legacy; published instructions do not establish new-signup availability.
- The source will not connect: verify that the selected input matches the device protocol, confirm URL syntax and authentication against the device manual, and check whether a non-default port is included.
- An IP camera input fails: confirm RTSP and H.264 support and use the camera’s exact source URL, not just its local network address.
- Viewers cannot access the hosted page: verify that the hosted page was selected when the stream was created, then share the URL provided for that stream.
- You need different quality renditions: check whether adaptive bitrate is selected; passthrough produces one source-matching rendition and has subscription, region, and 4K limits.
- Charges continue after the event: stop the stream in Wowza Video when the event ends instead of relying on automatic idle stopping.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube channel loop rather than a live camera or encoder feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and is not a camera-to-Wowza replacement.
