Wirecast 6 was a 2014 release that added playlists, live replay, media trimming, social overlays, audio preview, and crash-recoverable recordings. Its features show how the software’s production workflow was evolving, but Wirecast 6 is now a legacy version: Telestream’s version history lists Wirecast 16.5.4, so check with Telestream about availability, activation, and compatibility before installing or buying an old license.
What Wirecast 6 added
Telestream announced Wirecast 6 on November 5, 2014. Its headline additions were designed to help producers coordinate media, handle live segments, and add production elements without leaving the broadcast workflow.
- Playlists: Queue videos, images, audio, and live shots, then arrange them by dragging and dropping.
- Replay: Capture a segment during a production, add it to a master layer, and slow it down, speed it up, or scrub to a particular moment.
- Media editing: Trim recorded media, including replays, and adjust clip length and in/out points in the preview window.
- Twitter overlays: Search posts by text, username, hashtag, or timeline, choose which messages to show, and overlay them on live or recorded shots.
- Audio preview: Listen to a shot’s audio before taking that shot live.
- Recoverable recordings: Telestream said the file format could recover a recording up to the point of a system crash.
- More production support: The release also added keyboard shortcuts, 64-bit support for Windows and Mac OS, Mac Retina display support, and direct streaming to Microsoft Azure Media Services.
The feature announcement also described custom scoreboard graphics and keyboard shortcuts for scorekeeping in Wirecast Pro. NewBlueFX Titler Pro was a separately sold plug-in for title creation, not an included Wirecast 6 feature. The announcement said WirecastCam could use an iPhone 4S or newer or an iPad on the same Wi-Fi network as a camera source, but marked iOS sources “Coming Soon”; that announcement is not evidence of present-day app availability.
How to use Wirecast 6’s production features
The documented features support a straightforward production sequence, though Telestream’s feature announcement is not a complete user manual and does not establish exact menu names or click paths.

#1 Best Overall
1. Prepare your inputs and destination
Confirm the camera and media sources you intend to use, then configure the streaming destination and stream. A USB webcam may be useful as a camera accessory, but the available Wirecast 6 materials do not verify any particular webcam model as compatible.
2. Build a playlist for planned segments
Queue the relevant videos, images, audio, and live shots. Arrange the items in sequence, trim recorded clips, and set their in/out points. For playlist completion, choose the behavior that fits the production: return to the last live shot, loop the content, hold the final shot, or display the preview. Telestream cited commercial breaks, archived content during off-hours, and rotating camera views as uses for playlists.

Historical system requirements and upload bandwidth
Wirecast 6’s requirements varied by point release. These are period specifications, not current compatibility advice.
| Release notes | Operating systems listed | Hardware and storage details | Bandwidth guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wirecast 6.0.1 (2014) | Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks and 10.10 Yosemite; Windows 7 32/64-bit and Windows 8 64-bit. Windows XP, Windows 8 32-bit, and OS X 10.8 or earlier were unsupported. | Windows minimum: dual-core 2.3 GHz CPU, 2 GB RAM, and 512 MB PCI-Express graphics with 3D acceleration. The notes also gave additional CPU and RAM recommendations for higher-resolution streaming. | Telestream’s rule of thumb was twice the total stream bitrate. |
| Wirecast 6.0.6 (November 3, 2015) | Mac OS X 10.9, 10.10, and 10.11 were listed. Windows XP and Windows 8 32-bit were excluded. | 2 GB minimum RAM; 4 GB recommended for 1080p streaming; 200 MB installation space plus storage for recordings. | The notes repeated the recommendation of twice the total stream bitrate. |
The twice-the-bitrate figure is a historical rule of thumb from Telestream’s Wirecast 6.0.1 release notes, not a guarantee of stream stability. Actual upload needs depend on the stream and network conditions.
