SRT can carry video from a remote camera or encoder to an SRT-capable receiver or relay; that system must then forward the feed to YouTube using a supported route, such as RTMPS or HLS. YouTube’s public setup guides reviewed for this article document RTMP(S) and HLS workflows, not a direct SRT URL and stream-key procedure. That describes the published setup guidance, not proof that no private or limited SRT option exists.
What SRT ingest means in a YouTube workflow
SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) is a transport protocol for moving a live feed between SRT-enabled devices over a network. It is useful when a remote source needs to contribute video to a production receiver or relay across an internet connection affected by packet loss, jitter, congestion, or changing bandwidth. Haivision describes SRT source configuration and network considerations in its SRT source guidance.
For YouTube, think of the path as two separate links: source → SRT receiver or relay → YouTube. The first link may use SRT; the second must use an ingest method the receiving system and YouTube support. YouTube’s published setup instructions describe RTMP(S) and HLS. OBS documents sending to a custom SRT destination, which does not establish YouTube as an SRT destination.
Does YouTube Live support direct SRT ingest?
YouTube’s public setup pages reviewed here do not document a direct SRT ingest URL and SRT stream-key workflow. The documented options include RTMPS and HLS. This is a statement about those public instructions, not a definitive claim that no channel-specific, private, or limited SRT offering exists. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide, RTMPS encryption instructions, and encoder setup guide.

So you generally cannot paste an SRT address into YouTube’s server URL field and expect it to work. If your source only outputs SRT, receive it with an SRT-capable system and configure that system to send RTMPS—or HLS when appropriate—to YouTube.
Choose the right route
| Route | Best fit | What you configure | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | Conventional streaming from a compatible encoder to YouTube | YouTube’s RTMPS server URL and stream key in the encoder | YouTube recommends RTMPS for the standard workflow. The URL shown by default may be ordinary RTMP, so select or reveal the RTMPS URL when you want an encrypted connection. YouTube RTMPS instructions |
| HLS | Workflows needing HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, when the encoder supports HLS | An HLS stream key and HTTPS URL, with the required segment and playlist behavior | YouTube warns that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Segments must be TS and last 1–4 seconds; the rolling playlist can have no more than five outstanding segments. Requests use HTTPS POST/PUT; byte-range support is not available. YouTube HLS setup guide |
| SRT contribution, then RTMPS or HLS | A remote SRT source that needs to reach a production receiver or relay before YouTube | Agree on SRT connection details between sender and receiver, then configure the receiver’s YouTube-supported output | SRT link latency is not total viewer latency. Check reachability, firewall rules, link headroom, and the relay’s output compatibility. OBS SRT guide; Haivision SRT source guidance |

- Set up the SRT source and receiver. Configure the source encoder to send to a reachable SRT receiver or relay. Match the connection mode (such as caller or listener), address and port, and latency buffer at both ends. For an internet connection, verify that the receiver is publicly reachable as needed and that firewalls allow the traffic. OBS’s SRT Protocol Streaming Guide covers custom SRT destinations and connection settings.
- Get YouTube’s ingest details. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the server URL and stream key for the protocol you intend to use. For the standard workflow, use the RTMPS URL if you want the encrypted connection; YouTube explains that the default URL may be ordinary RTMP in its RTMPS instructions.
- Configure the receiver’s output. Set the relay to forward its received feed to YouTube via RTMPS, or choose HLS if your workflow requires it and your encoder supports its requirements. Do not enter the source’s SRT URL as YouTube’s server URL.
- Match the output to the selected ingest route. Check that the relay’s codec and stream settings are accepted by the encoder and YouTube workflow. For HLS, meet the TS segment, duration, rolling-playlist, and HTTPS request requirements listed in YouTube’s HLS guide. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers recommended settings for its documented ingest workflows.
- Start the source, then verify the handoff. Confirm that the receiver sees the SRT contribution feed. Start its YouTube output and check the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room before going live to viewers.
- Monitor network headroom. Watch the source-to-receiver and relay-to-YouTube links separately. If a link is oversubscribed, reduce video bitrate or otherwise adjust the output to fit available capacity; Haivision’s network guidance advises checking link capacity.
Configure SRT latency without confusing it with viewer delay
The SRT latency buffer helps the receiver handle network variation; it is not a measurement or guarantee of glass-to-glass or YouTube playback latency. OBS’s SRT guide, published January 14, 2022, gives a 120 ms default and advises setting latency to at least 2.5 times the round-trip time between encoder and ingest server. Its URL parameter is expressed in microseconds. Treat these as OBS SRT configuration recommendations, not YouTube end-to-end latency targets. OBS SRT Protocol Streaming Guide
Increasing the buffer can give a variable network more time to recover packets, but it also adds delay on the SRT leg. The right value depends on the measured path and the behavior of the sender and receiver; it does not remove the separate latency introduced by the relay, YouTube ingest, or playback.

When to use RTMPS instead of adding SRT
If your encoder is already at the production location and can reach YouTube reliably, connect it directly with YouTube’s RTMPS workflow. SRT is useful when you need an SRT contribution link to a receiver or relay; it is not a required extra step for a normal encoder-to-YouTube stream. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the usual setup, and its RTMPS guide explains how to use the encrypted URL.

- YouTube does not connect to the SRT URL: YouTube’s public setup pages reviewed here document RTMP(S) and HLS, not a direct SRT destination workflow. Put an SRT-capable receiver or relay between the source and YouTube, then forward using a supported route.
- The SRT receiver never sees the source: Check that sender and receiver agree on caller/listener mode, address, port, and latency settings. Confirm public reachability and firewall rules for the chosen network path.
- The receiver gets video, but YouTube does not: Check the relay’s output protocol, server URL, stream key, and codec/settings. Confirm that the URL and key correspond to the same YouTube stream and ingest method.
- The RTMPS connection fails: Make sure the encoder or relay uses the RTMPS URL rather than the default ordinary RTMP URL, and recopy the URL and stream key from the correct stream in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- HLS ingest is rejected or unstable: Verify TS segment format, 1–4-second segment duration, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and the absence of byte-range requests. These are YouTube’s published HLS requirements in its HLS setup guide.
- The feed drops or stutters: Inspect each link’s statistics and available bandwidth. If the path is oversubscribed, lower the video bitrate to restore headroom rather than assuming the SRT buffer can solve a sustained capacity shortage.
- Latency is higher than expected: Separate SRT transport buffering from YouTube’s ingest and playback delay. HLS itself has higher latency than RTMP according to YouTube; reducing an SRT buffer does not change HLS’s characteristics.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that stays live around the clock—not a live camera contribution—StreamNeo is a different kind of setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It is not an SRT relay or a camera-live service.
