Wowza Streaming Cloud is now called Wowza Video. It is a cloud-hosted platform for businesses and developers that can ingest video from an encoder or IP camera, transcode live streams, and deliver them through a configurable player. It also supports video-on-demand (VOD) and related content tools. This review covers the current product under its current name; it is based on Wowza’s official documentation, not hands-on testing or independent performance measurements.
What happened to Wowza Streaming Cloud?
Wowza renamed Streaming Cloud to Wowza Video. The old name still appears in searches and older material, but Wowza’s current product and developer documentation uses “Wowza Video.” See Wowza’s name-change explanation and its Streaming Cloud product page.
The name change does not make Wowza Video the same thing as Wowza Streaming Engine. Video is the hosted cloud platform; Streaming Engine is a separate product for running streaming infrastructure on server instances. The distinction matters when reviewing features and prices.
What features does Wowza Video include?
Wowza Video combines live streaming and VOD services. Its documented capabilities include cloud transcoding, configurable playback, content management, playlists, advertising integration, analytics, and API access. That makes it a broader hosted platform than a simple relay that forwards one incoming stream to a destination.

These capabilities are described in Wowza’s Wowza Video overview and product documentation. The documentation establishes that these features are offered, but does not by itself demonstrate how well they perform for a particular audience, workflow, or network.
How does a typical live workflow work?
The documented getting-started workflow sends a camera or encoder feed to Wowza Video. Wowza’s tutorial demonstrates an RTMP source configured with OBS Studio. Once the source is connected, the operator selects a supported stream mode, starts the stream, and uses the platform’s playback setup.

- Prepare a source. Use an encoder or supported IP camera. The getting-started tutorial illustrates an RTMP source with OBS Studio; it is an example workflow, not a requirement to use OBS.
- Connect the source to Wowza Video. Configure the encoder to send its feed to the Wowza Video stream endpoint using the connection details provided in the platform.
- Choose a processing mode. Where available for the subscription and broadcast location, choose adaptive bitrate or passthrough according to the source and playback needs.
- Start and monitor the live stream. Confirm that the stream is active and that the configured playback path works for the intended audience.
- Stop the stream when the event ends. Wowza advises stopping it rather than leaving it running after the broadcast.

Adaptive bitrate or passthrough: which should you choose?

Do not select passthrough expecting Wowza Video to generate an adaptive rendition ladder: Wowza explicitly documents that passthrough does not do that. Confirm mode availability for the relevant subscription and broadcast location before planning a production workflow.

How does Wowza Streaming Cloud pricing work?
The reviewed public pricing page lists Wowza Streaming Engine prices, not Wowza Video cloud subscription prices: One Month of Streaming is shown as a $295 one-time purchase, and Basic Monthly as $195 per month. The page describes server instances and transcoded channels. Those figures therefore cannot be used as Wowza Video pricing. The available official material here does not establish a current Wowza Video price; confirm the applicable price and plan inclusions directly with Wowza before budgeting.
There is also an operational cost to control: Wowza says a started live stream can accrue transcoding charges even when no active content is being sent. It says idle streams are automatically stopped after 20 minutes and advises operators to stop a stream after the event. Who is Wowza Video for?
Wowza Video is a plausible fit for an organization or developer seeking a hosted workflow that combines live video ingestion, cloud transcoding, configurable playback, and VOD or content-management features. Its API and advertising integration may also matter where a team needs those capabilities in a broader application or publishing workflow.
It is less straightforward to evaluate if the only requirement is forwarding one live feed, or if a buyer mainly needs a continuously looping, prerecorded YouTube broadcast. Those are different workloads from the documented camera-or-encoder-to-configurable-player platform. Before choosing, establish the required playback destination, whether VOD and adaptive renditions are needed, which integrations matter, and the full subscription and usage costs for the intended setup.
