To use overlays in both vertical and horizontal live streams, treat them as two separate compositions. A 16:9 landscape overlay rarely survives a 9:16 portrait crop intact: titles, alerts, faces, and other important details can end up cut off or crowded. Build or adjust a portrait layout, route each format to the right output, and preview both orientations before you go live.
Why one overlay may not work in both orientations
Horizontal video uses a 16:9 aspect ratio; vertical video uses 9:16, according to YouTube Help. Those different canvases change how the main scene and its graphics fit on screen. An automatic crop can remove content near the sides of a landscape image, while an overlay arranged for a wide frame may become cramped or obscure the subject in portrait.
Use a landscape composition for widescreen viewing and a portrait composition designed for a phone screen. Some workflows offer crop or layout options rather than a fully separate design, so check how the particular platform handles the vertical view before relying on it.
Choose a dual-format workflow
| Workflow | What the platform documents | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live Control Room or an encoder | YouTube documents horizontal and vertical formats, with vertical layout choices that include center crop, fit-to-phone-width, and stacked. It also documents using a third-party encoder for the formats. | Set up the vertical layout and verify which format is sent to each stream key before starting. YouTube says you cannot add the vertical format after a stream has started. |
| TikTok LIVE Studio | TikTok LIVE Studio describes dual layout as simultaneous landscape and portrait presentations that adjust to the viewer’s screen orientation. | Check that the scene works for both widescreen PC content and mobile-first viewing. |
| Twitch dual format | Twitch describes a separate dual-format workflow and names OBS Studio 32.0.0 or newer, along with other broadcast applications, as compatible options on its help page. | Check Twitch’s current software requirements and scene guidance before setting up; compatibility requirements can change. |
| Restream Studio or its OBS plugin | Restream documents portrait and landscape output through Studio and through its OBS plugin. | Preview the output and set the channel orientation in advance. Restream Studio says an active channel’s orientation cannot be changed during a stream. |
Platform-native dual layout and encoder-based workflows are not interchangeable. Confirm that the feature is available in the platform and software you will actually use. Official instructions: YouTube Help, TikTok LIVE Studio, Twitch Help, Restream Studio, and Restream OBS plugin.

Set up and check both overlay compositions
- Choose where to create the two formats. Decide whether to use the platform’s dual-format feature or a broadcast application that sends separate portrait and landscape outputs. YouTube documents both Live Control Room editing and third-party encoder use; TikTok LIVE Studio and Twitch have their own dual-format workflows.
- Arrange the horizontal scene. Place the main content and overlay elements for landscape viewing. Keep essential information within the composition instead of assuming an automatic crop will preserve it.
- Create or edit the portrait scene. Preview the 9:16 view and reposition or stack key elements so they remain legible on a phone screen. YouTube documents center crop, fit-to-phone-width, and stacked options; its editing canvas lets creators adjust zoom and position.
- Route each output correctly. For YouTube’s third-party encoder setup, select the vertical stream key and check that the intended content and format go to the corresponding stream keys.
- Preview both orientations. Check that titles, alerts, faces, and other essential visual information remain visible. Twitch recommends checking the stream on a phone in both portrait and landscape. Its dual-format guidance also describes using the primary horizontal scene menu to transition linked scenes.
- Set orientation before going live. YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started. Restream Studio says an active channel’s orientation cannot be changed mid-stream. Configure and verify the formats before starting.
Can you use one overlay for both?
You can reuse visual elements such as a logo, colors, or alert style, but do not assume the entire overlay will fit both canvases unchanged. A center crop preserves only what falls inside its frame. Use the platform’s preview to see what remains visible, then reposition, resize, or stack elements for portrait where the workflow allows it. If the platform only provides a crop or fit option, assess that result rather than treating it as a custom portrait design.
What to check before the broadcast
- Both the 16:9 and 9:16 views show the intended content, rather than an unintended crop.
- Titles, alerts, faces, and other essential information are not obscured or pushed out of view.
- The correct format is routed to the corresponding output or stream key.
- The target platform and broadcast software support the selected dual-format workflow; check current requirements, especially for Twitch.
- Portrait and landscape previews have both been checked, including on a phone if available.
- All format and orientation choices that cannot be changed during a live broadcast are set before starting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running 24/7, StreamNeo is a different workflow from a live camera or a dual-format encoder setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
