Twitch and YouTube offer different event types and variation conditions, so configure each platform’s alerts separately rather than assuming the same options apply to both.
Add an Alert Box
- In Streamlabs Desktop: open Sources, add an Alert Box, and place it in the scene where alerts should appear. Use the widget preview or test controls to check its position and size.
- With other streaming software: use Streamlabs’ integration or its dashboard/browser-source workflow, as appropriate for your software. The exact setup route varies; if you use a browser source, test it from the Streamlabs dashboard.
Streamlabs’ cross-platform alert guide and YouTube alert guide describe dashboard configuration; the available categories depend on connected or selected platforms.
Customize a platform’s event message
Select the platform and event
In the Alert Box dashboard, select the platform and alert event you want to configure. YouTube alerts can include subscribers, members, and Super Chats; Twitch has its own event categories. Only configure events shown for the relevant connected platform—there is no identical event list shared across Twitch and YouTube.
Edit the event’s presentation
Open the selected event’s settings and adjust the options that are available for that event. These can include alert text or layout, an image or GIF, sound, font, animation, duration, and text-to-speech (TTS) for supported events. Preview changes as you make them so you can catch text that is too long, hard to read, or obscured by other scene elements.

Keep the wording short enough to read while the alert is on screen. Check how usernames, amounts, and other inserted event details appear in the preview, and choose sound and animation that do not overpower your stream.
Choose whether settings apply to one alert or many
Event-specific settings
Use an individual event’s settings when you want one alert—such as a YouTube membership or Twitch follow—to have its own message, sound, image, or timing. Available controls vary by event.

General settings
General settings affect alerts more broadly. Depending on the available controls, they can include alert delay, moderation approvals, profanity filtering, and custom blocked words. Review these before going live if alerts can include viewer-submitted text or speech.
Global Editing
Use Global Editing for shared presentation choices across alerts and variations, such as font, TTS, animation, layout, or duration. Streamlabs describes Global Editing as a way to update alerts and variations with the same settings. It does not mean every event must look identical: retain or adjust individual event settings where needed.

Use variations for conditional alerts
A variation plays a distinct alert when an event meets a condition. In the Alert Box, add a variation to a supported event, choose one of the conditions shown for that platform and event, customize the variation, then preview and save it. Conditions are platform- and event-specific: Streamlabs documents Twitch subscription and bits conditions, raid size, YouTube membership conditions, and Super Chat amounts. Do not assume a condition available for one platform or event is available for another.
Use variations when a meaningful difference deserves a different presentation—for example, a different visual treatment for a qualifying membership or Super Chat. Check that the default alert still works for events that do not meet the variation condition.

Set up TTS and moderation carefully
For supported tips and bits alerts, Streamlabs’ TTS guidance describes choosing a minimum amount and voice, setting a spam filter, and using profanity controls or custom blocked words. That guide says TTS is off by default. Configure the threshold and moderation controls before enabling spoken messages, then test representative alerts; a test should verify both how the message sounds and whether filtering behaves as intended.
Preview, test, and troubleshoot
Test in the destination setup
- Preview each edited event and variation in the dashboard.
- In Streamlabs Desktop, use Test Widgets and check the result in the actual scene.
- In other streaming software using a browser source, test from the Streamlabs dashboard, then confirm the source is visible and audible in your scene.
Common problems and fixes
- The event or control is missing: confirm the intended platform is connected or selected, then check the event categories available for that platform. Event options differ between Twitch and YouTube.
- A variation never appears: check that it is attached to the intended event and uses a condition supported for that platform and event. Preview the variation rather than relying on a different platform’s condition list.
- Several alerts changed unexpectedly: check whether you edited General settings or used Global Editing instead of changing only one event.
- Settings no longer look as expected: check which widget theme is active. Streamlabs says switching themes changes alert and widget settings, so review the active theme before rebuilding individual alerts.
- The alert is not visible or audible in the stream scene: verify the Alert Box or browser source is present in the destination scene, check its placement and audio, and test from the software-specific route above.
- TTS is disruptive or inappropriate: revisit the minimum amount, voice, spam filter, profanity controls, and blocked words; test again with representative text before going live.
Choose a theme or build your own
If you want a faster starting point, Streamlabs offers pre-made alert and widget themes. You can switch themes, but a switch changes alert and widget settings, so inspect the active theme and retest your setup afterward. For a more personal visual style, you can also commission custom alert graphics; the appearance of your own design will depend on the assets you provide.
