You can play music on a YouTube live stream when you created it, it is in the public domain, or you have permission that specifically covers live-stream transmission. YouTube’s Audio Library is the clearest built-in starting point; check the selected track’s terms, including attribution requirements. A license for an ordinary video—or a track described as “royalty-free”—does not automatically cover a live broadcast or its replay.
Music sources that can work on a YouTube live stream
YouTube defines safe music as music in the public domain or music you have permission to use from the copyright owner. Its guidance also points creators to royalty-free and paid music sources, but says to check the applicable license. The key is permission for the exact use—not whether a track is free to hear, available to buy, or labeled royalty-free. YouTube’s guidance on finding safe music explains the distinction.
YouTube Audio Library
The Audio Library is YouTube’s clearest built-in recommendation for music and sound effects it describes as copyright-safe. Check the terms for each track before using it, especially whether attribution is required and how it must be given. Do not assume every track has identical terms.
Your own original music
Music you made can be suitable if you control the rights to every part of the composition and recording. If another person contributed to the performance, composition, recording, or sampled material, clear those rights too.

Public-domain music
YouTube identifies public-domain music as a safe option. Confirm the status of the specific composition and the exact recording or arrangement: a composition may be public domain while a particular recording has separate rights.
Third-party royalty-free or paid music
A paid license or a “royalty-free” label is not blanket permission for every use. Read the license and, for a live stream, confirm that it expressly covers live transmission. Also verify whether it covers the archived replay, the territories where the stream can be viewed, monetization if applicable, attribution, the license term, and any channel or platform restrictions. Ask the rights holder whether your channel needs to be allowlisted in Content ID.

Why Creator Music is not for live streams
YouTube says Creator Music does not support licensing for live content. Its usage details limit Creator Music licenses and revenue-sharing tracks to long-form videos, not live streams or Shorts. Do not treat a Creator Music listing or license as clearance for a livestream. YouTube describes Creator Music availability as limited to U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion outside the U.S. pending; access and terms can change. Check YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ and Creator Music usage details for current information.
What happens when YouTube detects music
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you. If the material remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A license does not prevent this automatically: YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. If the stream is archived, it may receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance on copyrighted content.

That means a valid license and a clean live broadcast are related but separate concerns. Secure the necessary rights, then confirm the rights holder’s Content ID process for your channel, dates, and territories. YouTube’s livestream terms also put responsibility on the provider to have necessary rights, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers (including public-performance licenses), and other royalty participants. Read the YouTube Terms of Service.
Checklist for a third-party music license
Before putting a track into a livestream, get clear answers from the rights holder or license terms on each point that applies:

- Relaxation and Peace: Helps you relax and find peace through carefully composed instrumental music
- Professional Musicians: Soothing classical guitar with cello performed by Billboard Top 10 artists, Ryan Judd and Kristen Miller
- Versatile Use: Calm your mind with this relaxation CD suitable for meditation, yoga and massage sessions
- Stress Relief: Relieves stress and anxiety through gentle, expressive acoustic performances
- Therapeutic Design: Developed by a board-certified music therapist with a percentage of profits donated to help children with cancer
- Live transmission: Does permission cover a YouTube live stream, rather than only an edited or prerecorded video?
- Replay: May the archived VOD remain available, and for how long?
- Territories: Where may the stream and replay be viewed? Consider that a YouTube stream may reach viewers in multiple countries.
- Monetization and public performance: Are these uses covered, and are any additional permissions required?
- Conditions: Are attribution, a license term, or channel, platform, or reuse limits specified?
- Content ID: Will the rights holder allowlist your channel for the relevant dates and territories, and how will that be arranged?
Keep the license and any written permissions where you can retrieve them. If a track’s terms do not clearly answer whether live transmission or the replay is covered, ask the rights holder before using it.
Common assumptions that can cause problems
- “It’s free” or “royalty-free.” Those descriptions do not establish permission for a live stream, replay, or every territory.
- “I bought the track.” Buying a copy does not, by itself, grant broadcast rights.
- “I credited the artist.” Attribution does not replace permission unless the license makes it a condition of an otherwise valid grant.
- “I have a license, so YouTube cannot interrupt the stream.” YouTube may still detect a match; a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel.
- “Creator Music clears it.” YouTube says Creator Music licensing does not support live content.
If a stream is interrupted or claimed
During the live broadcast
If YouTube warns you or interrupts the stream over detected music, remove or replace the disputed material rather than continuing to play it. Check the track’s license and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting if you believe you have permission. A license alone may not stop interruption while the channel is not allowlisted.

After the stream ends
If the broadcast was archived, check the replay for a Content ID claim. Review the track’s permissions for VOD use as well as live transmission; a license can cover one without covering the other. Follow YouTube’s claim process only when you have a good-faith basis and supporting rights documentation.
Keeping a YouTube music stream running
If you are running a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded music or other prerecorded video, solve the copyright question first: a streaming setup does not grant music rights. For the broadcast itself, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos and playlists: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the content from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay powered on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; and automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. This keeps the stream running; it does not provide music rights, so use tracks cleared for your broadcast and replay.
