If a sound file plays on your computer but viewers hear nothing, check the whole audio path: the file and selected track, the streaming source, the encoder’s mixer, stream-output routing, and the platform’s ingest. A moving meter in OBS is useful, but it does not by itself prove that audio is reaching viewers. Work through the checks below in order, changing one thing at a time.

First, find where the sound disappears

There are several separate checkpoints between a media file and a viewer: the file must contain audible sound, the streaming application must decode the intended track, audio must reach the stream mix, the encoder must send it, and the destination must accept and deliver it. Local monitoring is another path: it lets you hear audio on your own device, but a monitoring problem does not necessarily mean the stream is silent.

  1. Play the file locally. Confirm that it contains audible sound. If it is a video with multiple audio tracks, select the track you intend to use.
  2. Check the streaming source. Make sure the application has loaded the right file and that playback has started.
  3. Check the mixer. Look for activity on the source’s meter and confirm it is not muted.
  4. Test the stream output. If the meter moves but viewers hear nothing, check output routing and the destination’s stream-health information.
  5. Compare playback devices. Test the result on another browser or device to see whether the issue is limited to a particular playback path.

This sequence helps distinguish a file or source problem from a mixer, output, delivery, or viewer-device problem.

Check the file and source type

Verify the media itself

Open the file in a local media player and listen to the part you are trying to stream. If it is silent there, the streaming application cannot restore sound that is not present in the selected content. For a video with more than one audio track, check that the intended language or mix is selected; the file can play normally while the wrong track is silent.

Use a source that can read the format

In OBS Studio, a Media Source is the direct way to add a media file. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV as supported audio types for Media Source. If you need extended media support or a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed. OBS Project specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the source does not load, check the source type, file path, and required VLC installation before changing stream settings.

Check OBS playback, mixer, and monitoring

Watch the source meter during playback

Start the media and watch the corresponding source in the OBS Audio Mixer. OBS’s mixer displays volume meters and mute controls. If the meter does not move, confirm that the source is playing, the correct source is selected, and the source is not muted. A meter that moves indicates audio is reaching that mixer source; it does not establish that the stream output includes it.

Separate local monitoring from stream audio

If you cannot hear the sound yourself, check the source’s monitoring control and the configured monitoring device. Monitoring routes playback to your selected listening device; it is not the same diagnostic question as whether the encoder is sending the source to the stream. If the meter moves but your headphones or speakers are silent, test the selected device and local monitoring separately from the viewer test.

If OBS shows audio but the stream is silent

Check the encoder output and destination health

Use the streaming destination’s stream-health or encoder dashboard while running a short private or unlisted test where available. YouTube Help advises checking sound directly in the encoder and consulting stream-health errors. Its troubleshooting distinguishes an encoder or source-path fault from a healthy encoder with an outbound connection problem. That distinction matters: a meter moving in OBS can coexist with a problem later in the output or delivery path.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
  • If the destination reports missing audio, revisit the encoder’s audio output and track routing.
  • If the encoder indicates healthy output but delivery is failing, follow the destination’s connection or stream-health guidance rather than changing the media file without evidence.
  • If the test stream works on one device but not another, investigate that device’s playback path before altering the source.

Use destination-specific audio settings

For YouTube Live’s documented RTMP/RTMPS settings, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its settings guidance specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo, 48 kHz for 5.1, and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. These are YouTube-specific settings, not universal requirements for every streaming platform. Check the current destination dashboard and encoder guidance before applying them; platform requirements can change. YouTube’s error guidance also flags unsupported audio codecs, incorrect sample rates or bitrates, and streams with no audio or multiple audio streams.

If sound fails only on a phone or one playback setup

If the stream or recording sounds correct on a computer but sounds poor or disappears when played on a mobile device, investigate stereo-to-mono compatibility. YouTube Help documents that stereo audio with poor mono compatibility can lose quality or become muted when converted to mono on mobile, and advises checking phase. Compare the source and the streamed result on another browser or device. This is a relevant branch when the problem is device-specific, not a general explanation for every silent live stream.
