If Stream Labels is not launching or its labels are stuck, first identify which version you use: Streamlabs Desktop has built-in Stream Labels, while the separate Stream Labels app writes text files for OBS and other streaming software. Recreate the affected built-in source or reset the standalone app’s files and sources, then allow about 60 seconds for an update.

First identify which Stream Labels workflow you use

“Stream Labels” can mean two different setups. Streamlabs Desktop has label sources built in, so that workflow does not require the separate app. The standalone Stream Labels app instead generates text files that you connect to text sources in OBS or another streaming program. The fixes differ, so check how the labels are added to your scene before deleting files or changing sources. See Streamlabs’ setup guide.

Setup Where to fix it What must be present or running
Streamlabs Desktop built-in labels Recreate the affected Stream Label source in Streamlabs Desktop An Alert Box widget source must be present; it can be hidden
Standalone Stream Labels with OBS or another program Check the generated text files and file-backed text sources The standalone app must be running to update the files

Fix built-in labels in Streamlabs Desktop

  1. In Streamlabs Desktop, remove the source for each affected label.
  2. In the Sources panel, select +, open Widgets, and add Stream Label.
  3. Choose the label you want from the source’s drop-down menu.
  4. Confirm that the scene has an Alert Box widget source. Streamlabs says it is required for built-in labels to work properly; you may hide the source if you do not want it visible.
  5. Wait about 60 seconds for the label to refresh before judging whether the change worked.

If labels still do not update, log out of Streamlabs Desktop, close and restart the app, then log in again. If needed, try running Streamlabs Desktop as administrator. These are the recovery steps in Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guide.

Reset the standalone Stream Labels app

Use this reset when the standalone app will not launch or sign in, stops generating files, or produces files that no longer work with your text sources. It removes the old setup, so be ready to recreate the sources in your streaming software.

  • Powerful Plugins: Elgato 4KCU, OBS, Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, Discord, Spotify, Philips Hue, and many more.
  • Hotkey Actions: streamline your film editing, music production, photography workflow, etc.
  1. In OBS or your other streaming software, remove the text sources that point to the old Stream Labels files.
  2. Delete the Stream Labels output folder containing the generated text files.
  3. Delete the Stream Labels application data folder at %appdata%Roamingstreamlabels.
  4. Download and install the latest standalone Stream Labels app from the Streamlabs Dashboard.
  5. Sign in and select an output directory. Streamlabs describes a folder under Documents as one possible location.
  6. Recreate the text sources in your streaming software and point each one to the correct file in the new output directory.
  7. Keep the standalone Stream Labels app running while you rely on it to refresh those files.

Reconnect the files in OBS

Add a text source in OBS, enable Read from file, and browse to the relevant label file in the output directory you selected. Check the file path if OBS shows blank or stale text: a source still pointed at the deleted folder will not read the newly generated file.

If the login window never appears

A blocked login popup can make the standalone app look as though it will not launch or sign in. Streamlabs identifies antivirus interference as one possible cause, not a universal one. Check your security software’s notifications or blocked-app list and, if it has blocked Stream Labels, allow the app or add a targeted exception. Avoid turning off protection broadly as a routine troubleshooting step. Then reopen Stream Labels and try signing in again.

Why labels can appear stuck even after a fix

  • Refresh timing: Streamlabs says generated files update about once every 60 seconds. Wait through that interval after changing a label setting or creating a source.
  • The standalone app is closed: File-backed labels depend on the app running on the computer. If it is not running, the files will not keep updating in real time.
  • Manual edits were overwritten: Streamlabs may replace changes made directly in generated text files. Adjust label settings in the app rather than treating its output file as a permanent editable document.
  • Token capitalization is wrong: Tokens are case sensitive. Check the spelling and capitalization, save the settings, and allow the refresh interval.
  • The source points to the wrong file: After a reset or output-folder change, update the text source to use the file in the current output directory.
  • Security software is interfering: A blocked app or file operation can prevent login or output updates. Check for a specific block and allow the app where appropriate.

When to choose built-in labels or the standalone app

Use the built-in source if you work in Streamlabs Desktop and want to manage labels there. Use the standalone app when your streaming software reads label text files, as in the OBS workflow. Streamlabs’ setup guide says it offers over 60 different labels; availability and setup depend on the workflow you choose.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service—not a fix for Stream Labels. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the loop from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
