Compare each capture with a reviewed screenshot baseline. This guide uses Playwright, whose authentication and visual-testing features support that workflow.
What you need before you start
- Permission to access the site and monitor the page. Use a dedicated, least-privilege test account where possible rather than your personal account.
- A machine or CI runner that can run Playwright on a recurring schedule.
- A stable browser environment and a way to store secrets securely. The saved browser state can contain cookies and headers that impersonate the account, so treat it as a credential and never commit it to source control. Playwright authentication documentation explains storage state and its security implications.
Sites that require MFA, SSO, interactive challenges, or frequent reauthentication may need an approved integration or supervised renewal of the session. There is no universal way to bypass those controls; use the site’s permitted authentication flow.
Set up an authenticated Playwright session
1. Install Playwright Test
In a new Node.js project, install Playwright Test and its browser:

npx playwright install chromiumThese commands install the test runner and Chromium. Use the same browser and environment when establishing and later checking the baseline.

2. Sign in and save browser state
Create a setup test that performs the site’s normal login, confirms the signed-in state, and writes storage state to a protected file. Replace the example URL, selectors, and environment-variable names with those for your site:

});The example assumes the login uses labeled email and password fields and redirects to a URL containing “dashboard.” Change the locator and success check to match the site. Avoid putting credentials directly in source code; inject them through your CI secret manager or local environment.

3. Reuse the state and capture the page
Configure a visual test to load the saved state, visit the protected URL, verify that authentication succeeded, and compare a screenshot with the baseline:

});The heading check is important: without it, an expired session could produce a screenshot of the login page and look like a page change. Choose a stable, page-specific assertion that only passes when the intended authenticated content is present.

Run the test:
npx playwright testOn its first run, Playwright creates the expected screenshot baseline. Later runs compare captures against it. The screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing, which helps reduce transient rendering noise. Review the first baseline before treating it as the accepted appearance. See Playwright screenshot assertions.
Schedule checks and handle baselines deliberately
Run the test from a scheduled CI workflow or another scheduler at an interval appropriate to the page. Keep the screenshot baseline under version control so changes can be reviewed, but keep authentication state out of the repository. Configure the job to send a notification when a test fails and retain the actual screenshot and diff in a restricted location for diagnosis.

Inspect the actual image and diff. If the change is intended, update snapshots with Playwright’s --update-snapshots option and review the resulting baseline change before merging or deploying it.

Reduce false alarms without hiding important changes
Screenshot output can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep the environment consistent with the one used to create the baseline; pin the browser and use the same viewport where practical. Playwright’s snapshot guidance describes these sources of variation.
For content that changes continuously but is not part of the monitoring goal—such as a clock, rotating banner, or live chart—mask or stabilize only that region. A broad mask can conceal a meaningful regression. Playwright documents masking and other screenshot options in its page assertion API. User-specific data should also be held stable where possible, or it may create repeated diffs unrelated to a site-wide change.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The capture shows a login page: The session may have expired, the saved state may be missing, or the login flow may have changed. Re-run the authorized setup flow, verify its signed-in assertion, and check that the scheduled job can read the state file.
- The setup test cannot find a field or button: The site’s labels or login page may differ from the example. Inspect the page and replace the sample locators with locators matching the actual accessible labels or roles.
- The screenshot fails repeatedly with differences: Check whether the browser, operating system, viewport, data, timing, or headless configuration changed. Stabilize or narrowly mask irrelevant dynamic areas, then inspect the diff before deciding whether to update the baseline.
- The site asks for MFA or an interactive challenge: Do not attempt to bypass it. Check whether the site offers an approved integration or monitoring account; otherwise arrange supervised renewal of authentication state.
- The page loads but the check times out: The target may be slow, unavailable, or waiting on content that your locator does not identify correctly. Verify the page’s expected state and use an appropriate readiness assertion rather than accepting a screenshot of an incomplete or unexpected page.

Frequently asked questions
Can I monitor a page that uses SSO?
Possibly, if the site’s permitted login flow can be automated or it provides an approved integration. SSO and MFA requirements vary by site; do not assume a saved session will remain valid indefinitely.
Does a visual difference always mean the site is broken?
No. It only means the rendered image differs from the accepted baseline. Review the screenshot and diff to determine whether the change is intentional or needs investigation.
