Start by identifying what is failing: the game’s frame rate, Streamlabs Desktop itself, the capture source, or the network. Then disable third-party overlays and retest, reduce the game’s GPU workload if its frame rate falls, and follow the separate troubleshooting path for the symptom you actually have. These checks are reversible; the available Streamlabs guidance does not make buying hardware a universal first fix.

Identify the symptom before changing settings

“Dropped frames” can describe different problems. Note whether the game itself slows or crashes, Streamlabs Desktop closes, the stream stutters while the game remains smooth, or the game is running but absent from the preview. These symptoms point to different causes and fixes.

What you see What to investigate first
The game’s FPS falls or the game crashes while Streamlabs is open Third-party overlays and the game’s GPU workload.
Streamlabs Desktop closes or reports a crash Streamlabs crash diagnostics, Windows updates, GPU drivers, and the application’s launch permissions.
The stream stutters, but the game remains smooth Whether Streamlabs reports lagged frames, skipped frames, or network-related dropped frames; each has a different likely bottleneck.
The game runs, but Game Capture is black or missing Capture-source configuration and game compatibility, not the game’s FPS.

Streamlabs distinguishes lagged frames, skipped frames, and network drops in its dropped-frames and CPU/GPU guide. Check which symptom you have before treating all stuttering as a graphics problem.

Disable overlays and retest

Overlays from GeForce Experience, Discord, Steam, Ubisoft Connect, and Origin can contribute to FPS drops or instability, particularly when several are active together. Close or disable them, then reproduce the same game and streaming workload. Change one overlay at a time when practical so you can identify whether a specific change matters.

  1. Close the game and Streamlabs Desktop if needed to change an overlay’s settings.
  2. Disable one third-party overlay, such as Discord’s in-game overlay, using that application’s current settings.
  3. Reopen the game and Streamlabs Desktop and test the same scene and gameplay.
  4. If the problem remains, test another overlay rather than changing several settings at once.

Streamlabs’ game-crash and FPS-drop guidance also mentions Windows 10 Game DVR and Game Bar. Those directions are specific to Windows 10; menu names and availability can differ in other Windows versions, so do not assume the same interface applies everywhere.

Reduce the game’s GPU workload

If the game’s own frame rate falls while Streamlabs is running, test whether the system is short on GPU headroom. Limit how many frames the game tries to produce or reduce its graphics workload, then compare performance under the same conditions. These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes.

  • Lower demanding in-game graphics settings and see whether the game becomes stable while streaming.
  • Change one setting at a time and restore it if it does not help.

Streamlabs recommends these approaches to reduce game load and leave the system more room to compose frames. A smoother game after a cap or quality reduction is evidence that workload or available GPU headroom may be involved; it does not by itself establish a hardware fault.

Tell lagged, skipped, and network-dropped frames apart

Lagged frames

Lagged frames indicate a rendering or GPU-related performance problem. Try reducing game quality or limiting the game’s frame output as described above. Streamlabs also advises leaving enough system capacity for the streaming workload rather than allowing the game to consume all available graphics resources.

Skipped frames

Skipped frames point toward encoding load, often involving the CPU. Check CPU usage while streaming. If you encode with x264, try a faster preset to reduce CPU work; if your system and Streamlabs configuration support hardware encoding, testing it can also reduce reliance on the CPU. These changes trade encoding workload against other factors, so compare the resulting stream rather than assuming one setting is best for every setup.

Network-related dropped frames or disconnections

If Streamlabs reports dropped frames tied to the connection, or the stream disconnects while local gameplay remains smooth, investigate the network path rather than assuming the GPU is responsible. The cited Streamlabs guidance identifies network drops as distinct from rendering and encoding problems; it does not establish a particular connection speed or universal network fix.

If Game Capture is black or missing

A black preview does not necessarily mean the game crashed or is running at low FPS. Streamlabs notes that some games may not support Game Capture. Work through the source-specific checks below.

  1. Delete the affected Game Capture source and add it again.
  2. Launch Streamlabs Desktop as administrator and check the source again.
  3. Try a different capture mode, such as Capture Specific Window or foreground-window capture, if available for the source.
  4. Toggle the anti-cheat hook option for the Game Capture source and retest.
  5. Disable external overlays and check whether the game appears.
  6. Update graphics drivers, then try borderless fullscreen or window capture if the game still does not appear.

Options can vary by game and current app version. Streamlabs’ Black Screen Game Capture Problems guide covers the source-specific troubleshooting path.

If you use a capture card

Follow this branch only when the problematic video source comes from a capture card. Check whether another application is using the device, then review the device-specific source settings. Capture-card troubleshooting is separate from ordinary crashes or in-game FPS loss, and a card purchase is not a general fix for those symptoms. See Streamlabs’ capture-card issues and solutions guide.
