If Chrome saves only the visible part of a page, use DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot command—not Capture screenshot, which captures only the viewport. On a Mac, open DevTools, turn on Device Mode, then choose More options and Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome’s Device Mode guide describes this as capturing the whole page, including content outside the viewport.
Capture the whole page in Chrome on Mac
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools with Command+Option+I.
- Turn on the device toolbar using the device icon in DevTools, or press Command+Shift+M.
- In the device toolbar, open More options and select Capture a full size screenshot.
- Wait for Chrome to save the image, then check the downloaded file.
The similarly named Capture screenshot command captures only the visible viewport. If the saved image is cropped, first confirm that you selected the full-size command. See Chrome’s Device Mode documentation.

Capture one element or a selected area
Capture a DOM node
- Open DevTools and select the Elements panel.
- Choose the element in the page’s DOM tree. To select an element directly from the page, Chrome documents Command+Option+C for Inspect mode on macOS.
- Right-click the selected node and choose Capture node screenshot.
Chrome 89 release notes introduced node screenshots for a full node, including content below the fold. On macOS, Chrome’s DOM guide says the captured node screenshot is saved to Downloads. Sources: Chrome 89 release notes and Chrome’s DOM guide.
Capture a rectangular region
- Keep DevTools docked to the browser window.
- Press Command+Shift+P to open the Command Menu.
- Type screenshot and choose Capture area screenshot.
- Drag to select the region.

If the full-size capture is still cropped
The fact that a screenshot is cropped does not identify one universal cause. Chrome documents the full-size command’s intended scope, but that does not establish that every site layout or page state will be captured as expected. Check these details before treating it as a Chrome defect:
- Confirm the command and scope. Make sure you used Capture a full size screenshot. If you used Capture screenshot, the result is supposed to show only the viewport.
- Check where the missing content lives. A page can contain a separate scrolling region rather than one continuous document. If the missing portion is inside a nested scroll area, try Capture node screenshot on the relevant element.
- Check whether the content has appeared. Some page content is revealed only after scrolling, clicking, or another interaction. Put the page in the state you need before capturing; the full-size command’s documentation does not promise to trigger every site-specific interaction.
- Record enough detail to reproduce it. Note the Chrome version, the exact screenshot command, whether the missing content is in the main document or a nested scrolling region, and the page URL or a simplified reproduction.
A Chromium issue report describes a Mac full-page capture that resized the viewport while laying out the page for capture. It was closed as obsolete in September 2026 after waiting for reporter clarification; it is one issue record, not proof that all Mac crops have the same cause. View the Chromium issue.
