The best microphone stand for live streaming depends on where your mic needs to sit, how much space you have, and the weight of the complete mounted setup. A desk-clamp boom arm is the flexible choice when you want to bring a mic toward you and swing it away afterward; a weighted-base desktop stand avoids clamping but takes up desk space. Before buying, check the stand’s load limit, mounting thread, desk clearance, reach, and cable path.

Choose a stand style for your desk and speaking position

Desk-clamp boom arms

A clamp arm attaches to a desk edge and lets you position the microphone over a keyboard or toward your seated speaking position, then move it aside when it is not needed. Scissor-style arms offer flexible positioning, but the desk edge must accommodate the clamp. Measure the thickness and shape of the edge as well as the space beneath it.

Weighted-base desktop stands

A weighted-base stand sits on a flat surface, so it does not need a compatible desk edge or clamp. The trade-off is desk footprint and generally shorter reach. Check that the base and microphone will not crowd your keyboard, block a screen, or be knocked during normal use.

Tripod boom stands

A floor-standing tripod boom is worth considering if the microphone must be positioned away from the desk or the stand will also be used elsewhere. Extending a boom can shift the stand’s center of gravity and increase the chance of tipping; tripod legs can also become a floor trip hazard. For a seated desk setup, a clamp arm or desktop stand is usually the more direct fit.

  • Solid & Heavy-duty: High-quality steel material with super-strong springs and extra positioning hole ensures an excellent load-bearing capacity of 3.3lb/1.5kg, compared to others of 2.2lb/1.0kg. Check compatibility before buying

Calculate the mounted weight

Use the weight of the whole assembly—not just the microphone. Add the microphone, shock mount or clip, and any other accessories attached to the arm, then compare that total with the manufacturer’s stated limit or range. A microphone may be within a stand’s limit on its own but exceed it once mounted with accessories.

Match the mounting thread

Check the thread on the microphone mount and the stand. A stand may use one thread and provide adapters for others; verify which adapters are included rather than assuming a familiar-looking arm will fit directly. If you use a shock mount, check its thread too.

FIFINE BM88 Low Profile Microphone Boom Arm Stand for Gaming Streaming
  • [Sturdy Metal] The all metal microphone arm stand provides stability and sturdy protection for your podcast microphone whether you're gaming, podcasting, recording or streaming. The C-clamp can stay attached to a flat desktop and will not slip, making it less likely to scratch your desktop. Even if you vigorously collide with the arm stand or extend it fully to a certain height, the boom arm won't wobble and still remain stable and sturdy. (The microphone is not included)
  • [Low Profile] The arm stand for gaming can extend from the bottom of your computer screen. The podcast mic stand gives more space in a unobstructing view while in an intense game. The low profile arm stand for mic can be set to extend under the bottom of the screen without interfering the screen or desktop space, which will not obstruct monitor view even fully extended.
  • [Cable Management] The low profile microphone boom stand is equipped with cable managements in hiddenness to organize your microphone cables. Neat arrangement of cable will not cause excessive pulling or resulting in unexpected use, keeping your streaming setup cleaner.
  • [Fully Adjustment] Suspension arm stand recording can be extended to 29 inches, suitable for your long large office desktop. The boom arm for microphone can be adjusted up to down by 220 degrees, and horizontally by 360 degrees. More angle adjustments provide more usage options. Tips:The section which near the C-clamp can not be adjusted up to down.
  • [Screw Adapter] Coming with three kinds of threads size, 1/4'', 3/8'', 5/8'' that are compatible with most brands of microphones, the microphone boom arm solves the hassle of choosing additional adapters, which give a straightforward but not difficult assembly. You can easily figure out and quickly install and use microphones, shock mounts, etc with the mic stand in gaming, vocal recording, video creation.

Measure desk fit, reach, and clearance

Measure the desk edge where the clamp will sit, and compare it with the clamp’s maximum opening. Then consider the actual path from the mounting point to your speaking position: monitor placement, keyboard space, and whether the arm can move without hitting a shelf or wall. Reach figures are specifications, not a guarantee that every desk layout will work.

Plan for cables and connectors

For an XLR microphone, make sure the connector and cable can clear the arm and its joints throughout the range of movement. Integrated channels can help keep a cable routed along an arm, but connector clearance still matters. Confirm any model-specific compatibility notes, especially if an extension adapter is involved.

Compare these microphone stands by fit

The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not results of comparative hands-on testing. Treat them as a starting point and confirm the current model and included adapters on the product page before purchase.

Stand Mounting style and reach Published load Thread, desk fit, and cable details Best fit when
Elgato Wave Mic Arm Desk clamp; 780 mm / 30.7 in horizontal reach, 750 mm / 29.5 in vertical reach, and 360-degree rotation. 250–1,000 g for microphone and accessories. Clamp expands to 60 mm / 2.4 in. Compatible with 1/4-, 3/8-, and 5/8-inch microphone mounts; integrated cable channels. You need substantial desk-mounted reach and cable routing, and the complete assembly falls within its stated range. Elgato describes it as a studio-grade arm with extra reach and adjustability; that is manufacturer wording, not an independent assessment.
RØDE PSA1 Desk insert and clamp; reach figures not stated in the cited product information. 700 g to 1.1 kg for the microphone plus shock mount or clip. Internal springs; mounting-thread details not stated in the cited product information. Your complete microphone assembly is within the specified weight range and you want a desk-mounted studio boom arm.
Elgato Wave Desk Stand Weighted base; 216 mm / 8.5 in horizontal reach and 411 mm / 16.2 in vertical reach. Maximum load of 1 kg / 2.2 lb. Uses a 1/4-inch thread and includes 3/8- and 5/8-inch adapters. Does not clamp to the desk. You want a desktop base instead of a clamp and the shorter reach suits your layout.
RØDE DS3 Weighted-base desktop studio arm; reach figures not stated in the cited product information. Supports devices up to 1.5 kg. 360-degree ball head, cable management, and 3/8-, 1/4-, and 5/8-inch mounting compatibility. RØDE describes its movement as quiet for stream and recording adjustments; this is a manufacturer claim. You prefer a weighted base and need the stated higher maximum load or broad thread compatibility.
Shure by Gator SH-BROADCAST1 Desk-mounted arm; up to 940 mm / 32.25 in extension as listed by Shure. Not stated in the cited product information. Fits desks up to 55 mm / 2.17 in thick. Shure lists the SM7B, SM7dB, MV7, MV7+, and MV7X as compatible via the threaded extension adapter, which provides XLR cable clearance for those named models. Microphone sold separately. You own one of the named Shure microphones and want the specified extension-adapter fit and XLR clearance. Verify load suitability separately because a load limit is not stated here.

Which stand suits a Shure SM7B, SM7dB, or MV7?

Shure specifically lists the SH-BROADCAST1 for the SM7B, SM7dB, MV7, MV7+, and MV7X when used with its threaded extension adapter. Shure says the adapter also provides XLR cable clearance for those models. Its product information gives a desk-thickness limit but does not state a supported load, so do not infer that every mounted configuration is suitable from the compatibility list alone.

For another stand, check the microphone’s mounting thread, the adapter or shock mount you plan to use, the full assembly weight, and connector clearance. Compatibility is about more than whether a thread can be attached: the arm must also support the assembly and leave room for the cable.

Set up the stand without sacrificing desk space

  1. Mark your speaking position. Sit as you normally stream and identify where the microphone should be relative to your mouth, keyboard, and monitor.
  2. Choose the mounting point. For a clamp arm, check desk thickness against the published maximum and make sure the clamp has a flat, unobstructed edge. For a weighted base, reserve enough surface area that it will not interfere with your controls.
  3. Confirm the assembly fits the stand. Check the microphone, clip or shock mount, and any other attached accessories against the stated load and thread specifications.
  4. Route the cable before final positioning. Leave enough slack for arm movement, and ensure the plug does not press against an arm joint or desk edge. Use built-in channels where available.
  5. Move the mic through its working range. Check that it reaches your speaking position and can be moved away without striking a monitor, wall, shelf, or other equipment.

Common fit problems and what to check

  • The clamp will not sit securely: Re-measure desk thickness and inspect the underside and edge for lips, rails, or obstructions. Compare the usable edge with the manufacturer’s maximum clamp opening.
  • The arm does not hold the microphone where you place it: Recalculate the full mounted weight and compare it with the stand’s published range. Do not treat the microphone’s bare weight as the assembly weight.
  • The microphone will not screw on: Check both mounting threads and the included adapters. Verify that the adapter is intended for the stand-to-microphone connection you need.
  • The XLR plug or cable catches: Reposition the arm and cable, leave suitable slack, and confirm connector clearance through the full movement range. A named-model clearance statement applies only to the specified configuration.
  • The mic reaches the desk but not your speaking position: Compare the stand’s reach with the distance from its mounting point to where you sit. A longer reach or a different clamp location may be needed.
  • A floor tripod feels unstable when extended: Reduce boom extension or reposition the stand so the boom’s load remains over the base; keep tripod legs clear of walking paths.

Or let it run in the cloud
