You can review a test upload privately or as an unlisted video before publishing. Shorts and longer videos are both valid starting formats; choose based on what your topic needs and what you can make consistently.
1. Choose a subject and a viewer
Decide who you want to help or entertain and what recurring subject your video blog will cover. A clear promise—such as showing beginners how to cook inexpensive meals or documenting a particular kind of project—helps viewers know what to expect from another installment. This is an editorial choice, not a YouTube eligibility requirement.
Plan one useful first video rather than trying to map out an entire channel. A simple outline is a direct opening, the main explanation or demonstration, and a concise close. Keep the scope manageable enough to record and finish.
2. Create your YouTube channel
A Google Account alone is not a public YouTube channel. You can use a Google Account to watch and subscribe, but uploading videos, commenting, and creating playlists require a YouTube channel. Follow YouTube’s channel creation instructions to set one up.

YouTube offers a personal channel and an option using a business or other name. The latter can use a Brand Account and support multiple managers or owners, which may suit a project involving more than one person.
3. Record with what you have
You do not need to buy a production kit before you begin. YouTube’s official upload tips put it plainly: “There is no need for fancy equipment, what you have at hand will do.” A phone you already own can record video, and YouTube also supports creating Shorts with a smartphone in the app. Optional accessories such as a tripod or external microphone may help with a particular setup, but they are not prerequisites.
Before recording, check that the subject is visible and that your voice or other important sound can be heard. Make a brief test clip and play it back; this can reveal framing or sound problems before you record the full video.

4. Choose Shorts or a longer video
There is no universally best format or posting cadence. Choose according to the idea, how much explanation it needs, and the time you can realistically spend filming and editing.

For a Short, YouTube says you can record in the app or upload an eligible vertical video. Platform format details can change, so check the current YouTube Shorts creation guide before relying on a specific limit. (The official guide is also the place to confirm current creation options.)
When reviewing Shorts performance, distinguish total views from Engaged views. YouTube changed Shorts view counting on March 31, 2025: a view now counts when a Short starts or replays, without a minimum watch time. Engaged views remain in Analytics to compare viewers who chose to continue watching, and YouTube says YPP eligibility and Shorts ad revenue sharing use Engaged Shorts views.

5. Upload your first video in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create, then Upload videos.
- Select the video file and fill in its details, including an accurate title and description.
- Review the available settings and choose the visibility you intend: public, private, or unlisted. For a test, private or unlisted lets you review the upload before making it public.
- Complete the upload flow and check the video’s playback and details. Select the publishing option when you are ready for viewers to access it.
YouTube treats uploading and publishing as separate actions: uploading imports the file, while publishing makes it available to viewers according to its visibility. See the current YouTube Studio upload workflow and beginner upload tips for interface details.
6. Use original material and respect rights
Use material you made or have the necessary rights to use, including music, images, and video clips. Giving credit does not by itself grant permission. YouTube’s monetization rules also require compliance with applicable Community Guidelines, copyright rules, and advertiser-friendly content policies. Its Shorts policy gives non-original reuploads and artificial or fake views as examples of ineligible engaged views. Check the current channel monetization policies and Shorts monetization policy rather than assuming a particular use is permitted.

7. Build a repeatable process and review results
After publishing, note what you would change in the next installment: whether the opening makes the subject clear, whether the explanation is easy to follow, and whether the format suited the material. Use Analytics appropriate to the format. For Shorts, compare Engaged views when assessing whether viewers chose to keep watching; raw view counts alone do not answer that question.

Choose a schedule you can sustain, but do not treat any particular cadence as a guaranteed growth strategy. YouTube’s guidance does not establish one universally best posting frequency.

Monetization is a later possibility, not a reason to expect immediate income. YouTube’s eligibility guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, describes two distinct levels. These thresholds are subject to country or region availability, account requirements, policy compliance, and YouTube review.

YouTube lists possible features including Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, YouTube Premium revenue, channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and Shopping. Availability and thresholds can vary by feature and region, and creators must accept the relevant terms. Reaching a threshold does not guarantee acceptance or a particular income. Review YPP eligibility requirements and the available monetization features in YouTube Help; in Studio, applications are handled through the Earn area.

YouTube’s help page also displays a time-sensitive notice about updated terms: it says creators should accept them by January 31, 2027, for continued full monetization under a change beginning February 1, 2027. Check the current terms and notice in YouTube Help or Studio, since this schedule may change.
