To add closed captions to a YouTube live stream, either enable YouTube’s live automatic captions for an eligible English stream or send caption data through your encoder or supported captioning software. Automatic captions are the quickest option when available; supplied captions offer a separate workflow for events that need a captioner or embedded captions.
Choose a caption method
YouTube needs caption data to reach the stream. The right method depends on your channel’s access to automatic captions, the event language and latency, and whether you have an encoder or captioning provider.

Turn on YouTube automatic live captions
YouTube’s live automatic captions are currently English-only, are configured for each stream rather than channel-wide, and are being rolled out to English channels. YouTube says the rollout is to channels with more than 1,000 subscribers; that does not guarantee the option will be available to every qualifying channel.
- In YouTube, select Create > Go live.
- Select Stream from the left menu.
- In the stream settings, turn on Closed captions.
- Choose Automatic captions as the caption source.
- Select the video language. The current live automatic-caption option is English-only.
This option requires normal latency. It is unavailable for low- and ultra-low-latency streams, including some mobile streams. Caption recognition can also fail or be incomplete if the audio is poor, speech is not recognized, speakers overlap, or multiple languages are spoken at once.

Send captions through an encoder or caption software
Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or open the stream.
- Go to Settings > Setup, turn on Closed captions, choose Embedded 608/708, and save.
- Configure the encoder to send EIA 608/CEA 708 captions. Depending on the setup, it may read a caption file or encode captions in real time.
The 608/708 standard allows as many as four language tracks, but YouTube currently supports one caption track for this workflow.
Supported caption software and HTTP ingestion
- In the Live Control Room’s stream settings, open Advanced settings and set a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay, as directed by YouTube for this workflow.
- Turn on Closed captions and copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL.
- Give the URL to the captioner or supported software, then save the stream settings. Each stream entry point can have one caption feed.
- Confirm that the software’s clock is accurate. If captions do not arrive, check whether antivirus software is interfering with it.

These are options listed by YouTube, not endorsements. Check current compatibility and setup with the software vendor or caption provider.
Prepare and test captions before going live
- Confirm the stream’s caption source and, for automatic captions, selected language and latency.
- For embedded captions, verify that the encoder is configured to send them—not merely that captions are enabled in YouTube Studio.
- For HTTP caption delivery, confirm the captioner has the correct signed ingestion URL and that the stream entry point has not already been assigned another feed.
- Test before the event with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Preview the stream in the Live Control Room, check messages and stream health, and monitor audio and video quality during the event.
- Where possible, improve unclear audio and reduce overlapping speech. These can interfere with automatic recognition.
Troubleshoot captions that do not appear

What happens to captions after the stream
Live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the stream ends. YouTube generates new captions later through its video-on-demand process, and those captions may differ from the live version. Review the archive captions for recognition errors rather than assuming the live track carries over.
