You can turn recorded lessons into a continuous YouTube Live channel by feeding a repeating playlist into an encoder and connecting that encoder to YouTube Live Control Room with a stream URL and private stream key. Before relying on it, confirm your channel is eligible, clear the lessons for streaming, and test what happens when the playlist, encoder, or internet connection is interrupted. A continuous setup is an operating arrangement—not a guarantee that one YouTube live event will run forever.
Choose how the lessons will play and stream
YouTube’s encoder workflow accepts a live feed from either software or standalone hardware. The encoder turns the video feed into a digital stream and sends it to YouTube. Your lesson files still need a playback process that presents them in the intended order and repeats them; YouTube’s setup guidance does not prescribe a particular playlist player or guarantee its unattended restart behavior.

Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the channel
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Decide whether viewers should encounter a scheduled event or a continuous experience. In Live Control Room, scheduling can make an eligible upcoming stream visible to viewers and let them opt into reminders. Set the title, description, visibility, and other event details there; review the current controls in YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
Prepare the lesson playlist and rights
Build and test the playback sequence
Arrange the recorded lessons in the order learners should see them, and decide whether breaks, title cards, or a repeat point belong in the schedule. Configure the selected playback and encoding solution to feed that sequence continuously. Since playlist playback and restart behavior vary by setup, test a full loop and a restart before promoting the channel as continuous.

- Check that every file opens, has the intended audio, and plays through its end without an unintended blank interval.
- Verify whether the playback process resumes after a computer or service restart and whether it resumes at the beginning or from a saved point.
- Confirm how a missing, damaged, or unexpectedly long file affects the rest of the sequence.
- Decide how lessons will be updated without accidentally interrupting an active stream.
Confirm permission for all material
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to stream the content, including music and other third-party material. YouTube’s live-stream terms require compliance with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service and place rights responsibilities on the provider: YouTube Livestream terms and conditions.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A detected match can cause a warning or substitution with a placeholder, and unresolved use can interrupt or terminate the stream. A license alone does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery: YouTube says a rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for licensed content. Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- Open Live Control Room. Create a stream or open the scheduled stream you prepared. YouTube’s encoder instructions walk through the connection flow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s server or URL field and stream-key field. A stream key is a credential used by the encoder to send the feed; keep it private and do not include it in a public lesson, screenshot, or document. YouTube’s stream settings guidance explains stream keys and related controls: Manage live stream settings.
- Use the stream’s current settings. Set the encoder’s output to match the source material and the options presented in YouTube Live Control Room. The available guidance here does not establish a single bitrate, resolution, codec, or keyframe interval appropriate for every lesson stream, so do not copy a generic preset without checking the current YouTube settings and your encoder’s documentation.
- Start the lesson playback and encoder, then preview the incoming feed. Check that the expected video and audio reach Live Control Room before choosing to go live. Confirm the correct scheduled stream is selected and that its metadata is accurate.
- Go live and verify the viewer experience. Check the watch page on a separate device, including a phone, and confirm that audio is intelligible and video is playing as intended.
YouTube says stream keys can be reused through custom keys. Treat one as a password: if it is exposed, reset it rather than assuming that deleting a public post is enough to protect the stream.
Plan for bandwidth, interruptions, and archives
Leave upload capacity in reserve
YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload capacity with 20% headroom. Measure upload speed, not download speed, and account for other people or devices sharing the connection. If the connection cannot sustain the feed, reduce the configured output in line with the current YouTube settings and your source rather than relying on an optimistic speed-test peak. Test failure and recovery before launch
Continuous operation depends on the whole chain: lesson playback, encoder, network, and YouTube ingest. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder in advance, previewing, testing failover, checking local archive-file growth, confirming playback on watch pages and mobile, and monitoring audio and video. Test the cases that matter to your setup, including a network interruption and an encoder or playback restart. Do not assume that a particular software player or device will resume automatically.
Understand the archive limit
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. That is a specific limit, not a promise that streams of 12 hours or more will be archived, nor evidence that one event can remain open forever.
