Its main tradeoffs are just as direct: you need to be present, manage a real-time production, and accept more technical and moderation risk than with a prepared upload. Going live can create a shared moment, but it does not guarantee viewers, engagement, or income.

Pros: what live streaming can do well
Make participation part of the content
Live chat, questions, reactions, polls, and Q&A can make a lesson, troubleshooting session, interview, or demonstration more participatory. Viewers can respond to what is happening rather than wait for a later upload. This is a format advantage, not a promise that viewers will show up or take part. YouTube Help describes live streaming as a way to connect with an audience in real time through video and chat: YouTube’s live-streaming overview.
Create a shared occasion
When viewers watch at the same time, a premiere-like event can feel communal: people experience the same broadcast and can talk about it together. YouTube presents shared viewing as a way to support a deeper sense of community; that is the platform’s stated rationale, not independent proof that every channel will build a stronger community.
Show something while it is happening
Live is useful when freshness matters: a game session, event, demonstration, or spontaneous conversation can feel direct and less scripted than an edited video. The same immediacy means you have less control over what appears on screen and in chat.

Use possible live revenue features
YouTube describes several potential revenue routes, including ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Premium revenue, and members-only live streams or chat. Access depends on channel and feature eligibility, and revenue is not assured. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance and applicable eligibility information before planning around any one feature.
Give the event a possible second life
You may be able to post a replay or highlights after a stream. YouTube says likes on a stream can carry over to its video-on-demand archive. Treat reuse as an option, not an automatic outcome: decide whether a replay suits the topic and review it for sections that need clipping or context.
Cons: what the live format asks of you
You have to be ready in real time
An upload can be revised before publication; a live broadcast cannot. You need a workable outline, an opening and closing, and a plan for interruptions or mistakes. For interactive sessions, decide in advance whether you will answer questions as they arrive or reserve time for them.

Technical problems are visible to viewers
Connection congestion, encoding problems, audio issues, or a failed camera can interrupt the experience. A connection that seems adequate on average may still fluctuate. YouTube recommends testing an encoder stream and monitoring stream health; allow time to check the event’s audio, video, and accessibility before inviting an audience. Lower latency can make conversation feel more immediate, but leaves the player less read-ahead buffer and can increase buffering. YouTube says most viewers on low latency experience less than 10 seconds of latency, and most viewers on ultra-low latency experience less than five seconds. These are typical descriptions of those settings, not a guarantee for any particular viewer or stream. Normal latency favors robustness, supports all resolutions, and supports live features; choose a lower-latency setting only when faster interaction matters enough to accept less buffering headroom. Chat requires boundaries and moderation
Interactive chat can help an event, but it can also distract or become disruptive. Set expectations, decide who will moderate, and know how you will handle inappropriate comments or a disruptive guest. YouTube offers chat controls and filters in some workflows; consult its live chat moderation guidance for the controls available to your stream.

Policy and access rules apply
As stated in YouTube’s help guidance reviewed on October 3, 2026, a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to livestream; the minimum age to livestream is 16. Streams must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Requirements and feature rules can change, so confirm the current YouTube live-streaming requirements before scheduling.
Should you livestream or upload a prerecorded video?
Choose based on the job the video needs to do, not on the assumption that one format always performs better. Live is a strong candidate when immediacy and audience participation are central. A prepared upload is often a better fit when viewers need a polished, searchable reference or when you cannot attend at a fixed time.

A hybrid can work well: stream a live lesson or Q&A, then publish an edited version or selected highlights if they remain useful. A replay may be available, but do not plan as if every stream will automatically become a suitable on-demand video.

What do you need to start livestreaming on YouTube?
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows. Its help guidance says expensive equipment is not required to begin; pick the simplest method that fits the content.
- Mobile: useful for quick updates and vlogging. Check current account and device requirements in YouTube’s help pages.
- Webcam: a straightforward computer-based option for a talking-head session.
- Encoder: useful for gameplay, overlays, multiple inputs, and more involved productions. You can use hardware such as a microphone or preamp, but buying extra gear is optional.
Before a public event, confirm that you can access live streaming, prepare the title and audience settings, check your audio and video, and run a test stream. For an encoder workflow, follow YouTube’s setup and stream-health instructions. Higher-production events may call for professional-grade encoder hardware; that is not a general requirement for casual streams.

Pick measures that match the purpose. YouTube provides real-time and post-stream reporting, including concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat activity, average view duration, watch time, peak concurrent viewers, and subscribers gained during the event. Analytics can also include retention, demographics, playback location, traffic source, and device reporting; available details vary by report and format. YouTube’s analytics guidance describes available reports.

- For a lesson, consider average view duration and retention alongside the questions viewers asked.
- For a recurring community event, compare attendance and participation across similar events.
There is no universal viewer-count or engagement threshold that makes a livestream successful. Compare like with like and use the goal you set before going live.
