A screenshot will not automatically appear when someone shares your website. Social platforms usually build link previews from page metadata. To use a screenshot as the preview image, capture it, host it at a publicly accessible URL, set that URL as the page’s og:image, then inspect the shared URL in the platform’s preview tool.
Choose between a screenshot and a designed social image
Use a screenshot when the page itself—its interface, layout, or appearance—is what you want people to see. A purpose-made social image may work better when the goal is to make a headline, brand, or key message legible at small card size. Whichever you choose, keep important content near the center; that is practical crop-safety advice, not a platform-prescribed safe-area measurement.
A single image is simpler to maintain. Platform-specific versions can better accommodate different crops and constraints, but check the target platform’s current requirements before choosing dimensions.
Capture and host the image
- Capture the page. Use your device’s screenshot function or an image editor to prepare the image. Dedicated capture hardware is not required.
- Export for the target platform. LinkedIn’s sharing-module guidance calls for an image at least 1200 × 627 pixels, recommends a 1.91:1 ratio, and sets a 5 MB maximum. Images narrower than 401 pixels display as a thumbnail. These are LinkedIn-specific help-page values, not universal social-network requirements; check the destination platform’s current documentation. LinkedIn image guidance
- Put the image at a public URL. The platform’s crawler needs to retrieve it. LinkedIn warns that a compliant image may still fail to appear if the site blocks LinkedIn from fetching it or stores it in a protected directory. LinkedIn sharing troubleshooting
Add Open Graph metadata to the page
In the page’s HTML <head>, set the Open Graph properties for the page and point og:image to the hosted screenshot. The Open Graph protocol defines og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url as its four basic properties. Add og:description for the card summary. The protocol also supports image width, height, type, and alt text; when specifying og:image, it says to specify og:image:alt as well. Open Graph protocol

Inspect the preview and refresh it after changes
- Paste the exact URL people will share into that platform’s own preview or debugging tool.
- Check the title, description, image, crop, and whether the image actually loads.
- If you change metadata or the image, inspect the URL again to prompt a refresh where the platform supports it.
The platform’s own inspector is the best check of its cached view. A multi-platform checker can be convenient for comparing likely renderings, but it is a simulation rather than a guarantee of exactly what each service will display. LinkedIn says its Post Inspector can refresh a URL and that the refreshed preview applies to new posts; existing posts retain their previous preview. Its help guidance says to allow 48 hours after changing tags or sharing the URL for cache changes. Treat that timing as LinkedIn guidance, not a guarantee for other platforms. Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect preview
- The screenshot exists but the card shows another image: Confirm that the page’s
og:imagepoints to the intended image URL. Capturing an image alone does not assign it as a link-preview image. - The preview has no image: Check that the image URL is publicly retrievable and that the platform’s crawler is not blocked. A protected directory or access restriction can prevent a fetch.
- The card shows old content: Re-run the target platform’s inspector and allow for its cache to update. For LinkedIn, a refreshed preview affects new posts, not existing ones; its help page advises allowing 48 hours for changes to take effect.
- The image appears as a small thumbnail on LinkedIn: Check its width. LinkedIn says images narrower than 401 pixels display as thumbnails; its sharing guidance recommends at least 1200 × 627 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio, and no more than 5 MB.
- The crop hides important details: Move essential text and visuals toward the image center, or prepare variants suited to the platforms you target. Verify the actual preview rather than assuming a single crop will look identical everywhere.
