Start with the capsule near the center of the chest, around the sternum, clipped to a stable clothing edge with the microphone exposed and clear of hair, jewelry, hands, and fabric. Secure the cable and leave a little slack beside the mic. Then record a short test while speaking and moving; adjust until the voice sounds clear and natural without rustle, breath blasts, or wind.
There is no single distance that works for every microphone, outfit, and recording. Use chest placement as a starting point, not a fixed measurement.
Choose a starting position
RØDE describes the sternum as a useful general position for balancing closeness and natural sound. Shure’s recommendations vary by product and context: its MX100 guidance suggests about 3–6 inches below the neckline, its WL18xM guidance says 6–10 inches from the speaker, and its video and film guide suggests about six to eight inches below the chin. These are different starting points for specific microphones or situations, not universal rules. RØDE’s lavalier mounting guidance and Shure’s MX100 Series User Guide provide further context.
Clip it to a stable edge
For a shirt, blouse, lapel, or tie, try a firm edge above the sternum, such as a lapel, tie, pocket edge, or shirt opening. Keep the capsule facing open space rather than pointing into a fold. A centered position can help keep the voice more consistent when the speaker turns side to side, though a chest-mounted mic will not track the mouth as consistently as a headworn mic.

Adapt to the garment
On a T-shirt or sweater, a collar may be the most stable clip point, but it can rub the neck or fabric and may sound muffled. If the voice lacks clarity, try a slightly lower or more central point that stays clear of moving fabric. With any outfit, check the mic while the speaker turns, walks, and gestures; a position that sounds fine while standing still may become noisy in motion.

Keep the capsule clear
For an exposed mount, leave the capsule uncovered. Check that clothing, hair, jewelry, hands, and loose folds will not block it or brush against it. A collar placement can be convenient, but contact with the neck or fabric can create noise or make speech sound less clear.

Secure the cable
Clip or tape the cable to clothing so it cannot swing or tug on the microphone. Leave a small slack loop near the capsule as strain relief. For a concealed setup, route excess cable behind the garment where appropriate, secure a length inside the shirt, and keep both the mic and the first few inches of cable from rubbing against skin or fabric. Concealment can increase friction noise, so listen while the wearer moves.
Consider a concealment mount
A suitable soft mount can help isolate a concealed microphone from clothing noise. RØDE describes its InvisiLav mount as a soft, adhesive-fixable option; check that any mount you choose is compatible with your microphone and garment.

Manage breath, plosives, and wind
A compatible foam windscreen can help reduce breath noise and light wind on an exposed microphone. RØDE also suggests trying the mic upside down in its clip to reduce plosives from hard consonants. Neither technique is guaranteed for every capsule, so record a test with the actual mic and speaker. For heavier outdoor wind, RØDE recommends a furry windshield; account for its added visibility if the mic needs to remain concealed.
Check the windscreen’s fit against the microphone and mount. A loose or incompatible cover may not protect the capsule as intended.

Adjust for the microphone’s pickup pattern
An omnidirectional lavalier is generally easier to place and less susceptible to wind and cable noise. A cardioid or supercardioid model may help where background noise or feedback is a concern, but directional lavaliers can be more sensitive to placement and may be more prone to plosives, wind, proximity effect, and cable noise. Follow the mic’s intended orientation and test it in the actual room or outdoor setting.

- Attach the microphone at the center chest or another stable clothing edge. Use the windscreen you expect to use during the real recording.
- Record the same short sentence at each candidate position with the same speaker and recording setup. Listen back with headphones.
- Compare whether the voice sounds clear and natural or instead muffled, thin, or boomy.
- Have the speaker turn, walk, and move their arms. Listen for fabric rustle, cable bumps, breath blasts, or changes in voice level.
- Check whether the mic is acceptably visible, whether wind protection is sufficient, and whether the pickup pattern suits the background and feedback conditions.
- Keep the position that sounds best during both speech and movement, not only in a stationary test.
