To stream with OBS, download OBS Studio from the official OBS Project website, install the build for your operating system, run its Auto-Configuration Wizard, then connect OBS to YouTube with a stream key and test before going live. This guide takes you through that first setup, including the scene, audio, and YouTube settings you need.

How to download and install OBS for YouTube streaming

Check your operating system and hardware

OBS Project lists these baseline requirements:

  • Windows: Windows 10 or Windows 11, with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU.
  • macOS: macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later, an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU, and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU.
  • Linux/Unix: An OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and the X Window System or Wayland.

These are compatibility baselines, not a promise of smooth streaming. OBS notes: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” CPU demand depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and complexity of your scene. OBS recommends using its Auto-Configuration Wizard and testing your own setup. See the OBS Project system requirements.

Download OBS from the official site

  1. Go to the official OBS Project download page.
  2. Choose the download for your operating system.
  3. Open the downloaded installer or build and follow its prompts.
  4. Launch OBS Studio when installation finishes.

Downloading from the OBS Project site helps you avoid unofficial installers. OBS Studio is available at no charge; you do not need to buy equipment to complete this setup.

How do I set up OBS for YouTube Live?

Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard

On first launch, OBS may offer the Auto-Configuration Wizard. If it does not, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. Choose the option for streaming when prompted. The wizard factors in your intended use, computer resources, and network conditions, then suggests a starting configuration. Treat its result as a starting point, not a guarantee of stable output. OBS documents this flow in its Quick Start Guide.

Create a simple scene

A scene is the collection of visual and audio sources OBS sends to your stream. OBS starts with a blank scene. Add only what your broadcast needs; extra sources and visual complexity can increase the work your computer has to do.

  • Display or window capture: Show your desktop or a particular application; availability and capture behavior vary by platform.
  • Game Capture: Capture a game on Windows.
  • Video Capture Device: Add a webcam or capture card. A webcam is optional if you want to appear on camera; a capture card is for external video sources.
  • Image, text, or media: Add an image, title, or media source when the broadcast calls for one.

To add a source, select your scene and use the + button in the Sources dock, then choose the source type. Arrange and resize sources in the preview. OBS’s Overview Guide describes its main interface and sources.

  2. Select the intended microphone and desktop audio devices.
  3. Apply the change, then speak or play audio again and confirm the corresponding meter moves.

Choose a resolution and frame rate your setup can handle

The wizard can suggest a configuration, but there is no single resolution or frame rate that is right for every computer and connection. Higher resolutions and frame rates require more resources. OBS says 60 FPS can be more demanding than 30 FPS; test the output you intend to use rather than assuming the computer can handle it. YouTube likewise describes encoder streaming as an option for screen or game sharing, external audio/video hardware, and more involved productions. For a camera-only broadcast, YouTube also offers webcam and mobile routes. See YouTube’s guide to streaming with an encoder.

Where do I find my YouTube stream key?

Enable YouTube Live and create a stream

In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live and follow the Live Control Room flow to create or select a stream. If you have never streamed live before, YouTube says enabling it may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that delay before a scheduled first broadcast.

Copy the server URL and stream key into OBS

  1. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, open the stream’s encoder settings and locate its server URL and stream key.
  2. In OBS, open Settings → Stream.
  3. Select YouTube as the service if that option is available. Otherwise, enter the YouTube server URL in the server field.
  4. Copy the stream key from YouTube into the stream-key field in OBS, then apply the settings.
  5. When ready to test, select Start Streaming in OBS. Follow YouTube’s current Live Control Room flow; interface labels can change.

Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. If you believe someone else has seen it, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream settings and update OBS with the new key.

Test OBS before your YouTube broadcast

Do not make your first test the scheduled or public broadcast. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes before the first stream or recording. A short test helps reveal missing sources, incorrect audio devices, and performance trouble.

  2. Watch the Audio Mixer while speaking and playing any desktop audio you plan to include.
  3. Start streaming from OBS and check YouTube’s Live Control Room for the incoming preview.
  4. Confirm the picture and sound there, and watch OBS for signs your system is struggling with the chosen output.
  5. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live when you are ready to broadcast.

Use the test to decide whether to simplify the scene or choose a less demanding output. A configuration that works for a short test is useful evidence for your setup, but it is not a guarantee of future performance.

Troubleshoot common first-stream problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
You cannot start a YouTube stream. Live streaming has not finished activating, or the stream settings are incomplete. If this is your first time going live, allow up to 24 hours for activation. Recheck the YouTube server URL and stream key in OBS.
YouTube does not show an incoming preview. OBS may not be sending to the intended YouTube stream, or the encoder connection is not established. Confirm OBS is streaming, then compare the YouTube stream selected in Live Control Room with the server URL and key entered in OBS.
The microphone or desktop audio is missing. OBS may be listening to a different device than the one in use. Check whether the relevant Audio Mixer meter moves. If not, choose the intended device under Settings → Audio.
The camera, game, or screen is absent from the preview. The scene may be blank, missing a source, or using a capture type unavailable on your platform. Select the intended scene, add the appropriate source, and verify its visibility in the preview. Game Capture is for Windows; display and window capture depend on platform.
The stream performs poorly or the computer struggles. The selected output, encoder, or scene may exceed available resources. Run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard again as a starting point, reduce scene complexity or output demands, and test again. Baseline compatibility does not guarantee adequate streaming performance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a different route from desktop OBS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay running at home.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Learn more about StreamNeo, or start your free day.
